Springbank resevoir/flood mitigation
 

It was announced today that the $300 million Springbank Reservoir will be built.

From the sounds of things, this is a great thing and does seem like the best option. I was listening on the radio to a caller from Springbank who was of course against it, I had to laugh when he eventually answered the question of how many people this will affect - two dozen! Seems simple enough to me, pay those few people generously and get it built.

The video shows that the reservoir abuts Highway 1, the animation goes so far as to show water covering the highway. How big of an outflow would necessitate that?

So what are they going to do for the Bow?

Looks to cover 22, not TCH. That said, I was wondering the same thing. Given the short duration that it will be full (maybe a couple of days every 5 or 10 years?) perhaps flooding and closing Hwy 22 is OK, particularly when the west side of the ring road becomes an alternate.

The announcement yesterday though was for a smaller affected area (~1500 acres vs 6800) though from what I heard, but thats also questionable.

Theres also the report from the Dutch consultants and the Province's own recommendations

I have to say, whenever I read a document like this from the Province or the City, it always reads like they've already decided the option and just list the evidence that agrees with it. This document lists only positives for SR1 and only negatives for MC1 - we know at least there are some advantages to MC1 (protection of Bragg Creek).

I'm not saying that SR1 isn't the better option, it almost certainly is. But I'd like to think they gave all options an equal chance.
