Post a Random Photo Thread

Thought it might be fun to have an ongoing thread of single images - as much as Il ike the tours, sometimes a little randomness is enjoyable!

So post a random hamilton photo.

I'll start - I snapped these today with the sticky snow on the trees on James North:

Cool shot, willyflyboy. It looks almost like a model.

Is it wrong to want to make love to a building? Because, if I had the chance the old Federal Building on James Street North would be it.

Well, I certainly wouldn't judge you for it but then I'm not the best role model.

Did you know the Federal Building is currently in its third incarnation? It started primarily as a post office, though it served myriad other functions, upon completion in the mid-1850s. In the late 1890s Sun Life Assurance bought and renovated the old girl in stunning fashion. I think the last reno was done in the 20s or 30s. I really hope we get a fourth version because she's looking a bit tired.

You can see the Sun Life building in the lower left. The original Lister and Thomas buildings are in the foreground.

The Federal Building on James Street North was built in 1856. It was first home to a post office which eventually moved to the corner of King and John Streets. It was then the temporary site of the Hamilton City Hall between 1888 and 1890 while the new structure on the corner of James and Market Streets was being built. In 1897, the Sun-Life Assurance Company totally renovated it for their own district offices. In 1920, it went through another major renovation which saw the addition of two more storeys. Currently it is home to the Hamilton City Ballet which takes up the entire top (5th) floor and the rest of the building is used up as residential apartments.[12]

Bloody wikipedia - what doesn't it know? Anyway, pretty much nailed that one. ;)

Anywho, somebody needs to scrape that bloody stucco off the ground floor facade and treat her right.

Guess where I was today.

Dr Awesomesauce Aug 11, 2013 12:35 AM

Good question. I was gonna say the old Camelot Towers on Main W but it might be a much greater distance that that.

Great photos regardless.

Appreciate the kind words...but I'm far from decent. Yeah, I took these with max zoom from Syndeham street overlook above Dundas. Nice spot! Love Hamilton! I get downtown now and then, so if I have my camera along, it would fun to snap some pix of construction, etc. Maybe someone has pointers on where to shoot from, choosing angles, etc.

Dr Awesomesauce Aug 12, 2013 11:28 AM

Ha! Never would have guessed that location.

Beedok Aug 12, 2013 4:34 PM

I really like that second shot. It does a good job of showing some of the non-downtown highrises.
