I don't believe we have seen the Schlitz Buffet on NLA.
http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...924/SEbAFl.jpg ebay http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/800...922/tpVnDx.jpg reverse It says Telephone Main 395....does that mean the address is also 395 Main Street? _ |
I just saw an item on ebay that's a bit concerning.
It's a pair of magnificent bookends from the Los Angeles Public Library. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/923/JoCWh4.jpg They're signed on the bottom by the artist. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/640...924/ZYCTmn.jpg The seller is asking $2,250.000 So how did someone end up with these bookends? Here's the link to the item on ebay http://www.ebay.com/itm/Los-Angeles-...8AAOSwZJBYBtdk _ |

LOL, I dunno e_r, how do we know they're "antique"? (Legally for something to be antique it has to be at least 100 years old). To me they look like a corporate/donor reward or memento from when the Library was restored/expanded (or maybe just an LAPL gift shop item). In any case, they're not a very graceful take on the stern serenity of the Lee Lawrie originals (and one's missing its book while the other has a chip in its headdress). But if these guys turn up on eBay, let me know: https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/M3...w=w978-h634-no lapl |

historic mapworks 1924, looking over the grading for Central Library construction (BIOLA, 1913, on left margin): https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/TB...g=w803-h442-no lapl Detail from above. Intersection of W 6th and Olive on center-left margin below. It's not much of an image, but 555 S Hope looks to be the southern half of a two-story, side-by-side duplex numbered 553/555: https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/GS...A=w789-h480-no № 555, and it's twin, № 553, fell the same year as the photo, 1924. By then (and probably long before) the pair were called an "apartment house" as stated on the demo permit posted by HossC. I'm pretty sure I've seen another photo looking north from W 6th & S Hope with the Normal School still in place, but I can't find it right now. |

I see that I'm not the only NLAer looking for pictures of 555 S Hope Street. Above, t2 showed us the 1910 Baist map. Here, I've marked 555 on the 1921 Baist map.
http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...A555SHope2.jpg www.historicmapworks.com Depite its proximity to both the Normal School, and later the Bible Institute, 555 seems to be camera shy. I found two or three images of the area where it was just feet out of shot. The best I've come up with so far is this circa 1916 view of the rear. Comparing with the map above, I believe I've arrowed the right building. NB. I had to merge two photos from the set to get this view. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...3.jpg~original USC Digital Library |

Here's a school from Julius Shulman. It's "Job 2221: Thornton Montaigne Abell, Braddock Drive School, 1956".
http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...1.jpg~original By the size of his turn-ups, the boy on the right has plenty of room to grow into those pants. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...2.jpg~original I assume that this is an outdoor eating area. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...3.jpg~original The grown-up outfits of some of these kids made me think they were older until I zoomed in. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...4.jpg~original I hope the girl on the left kept her lunchbox - see below. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...5.jpg~original The last photo shows a small auditorium. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...6.jpg~original All from Getty Research Institute The school is now known as Braddock Drive Elementary School, and can still be found at 4711 Inglewood Boulevard in Culver City. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...7.jpg~original GSV Finally, here's a 1955 Annie Oakley and Tagg lunchbox like the one being held by the girl in the fifth picture. This one, complete with matching Thermos, is currently on eBay for $159.99. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...8.jpg~original eBay |

. Here's her reply: "These items were from a campaign called Save the Books. They would have been produced sometime between 1987 and 1993. They weren’t sold by The Library Store, so I don’t have any other information on them." I think ARCO is where I've seen them before too. Anyway, not precious e_r, so don't worry about them. |

Compare it to the Baist map I posted. I originally thought it would be the building to the left, but the surrounding houses suggest the one I arrowed. See where 555 is relative to the Rosegrove Hotel. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...A555SHope2.jpg www.historicmapworks.com |

To the left of the Wills home is Milo S. Here's the full photo: http://i1165.photobucket.com/albums/...pssgbzs7od.jpg The south side of the Glassell home is near the upper left corner of this enlargement from a c. 1900-02 (?) view looking north from the court house. A bit of the Plaza and the Pico House can be seen below the upper right corner: http://i1165.photobucket.com/albums/...psdkxlxz1h.jpg CHS.J3208 at Denver Public Library (previously posted) The Glassell home was one of four projects on Fort Hill by architect C.
