It's pretty wild. You can literally see appliances sitting in nearly finished units waiting to be installed.

Sargeant / Oldaker House Update
 
Looks like we are finally getting an update on the Sargeant / Oldaker House. Agenda item for tonight's RAA General Meeting. I'll see if I can hop on.

A group of developers has moved forward with plans for a significant downtown Phoenix hotel that was proposed five years ago but never built.

To be called The Edith, the $140 million mixed-use building will stand 17 stories tall and feature 236 rooms with 23,000 square feet of flexible meeting space. It's also expected to include a ground-floor restaurant, rooftop pool and bar, café and full-service spa and fitness center.

The group developing the new hotel includes prominent Valley developer Sunbelt Holdings and Scottsdale-based BB Hotels & Resorts, formerly known as Berger Holdings, California-based Pacific Hospitality Group and general contractor Mortenson. Gensler is the architect.

Would of been nice to see closer to 400 rooms and taller! But we take what we can get. With the Renaissance hotel across the street it will add more and more tourist downtown! With the renovation of San Carlos, this hopefully helps fill up that retail space along Central from Hilton Garden Inn and the Renaissance. Hopefully we see that place that had that Burger Counter place fill up soon too!

I've never heard of Live Forward but this is the same development group behind 100 Willeta and also some interesting projects noted on their website that I haven't seen before.

The lot is currently fenced off and there were a few construction vehicles onsite when I drive by a couple of days ago. I didn't get a chance to to get a closer look, but I presume this is site prep-work to be started by APS mentioned in the article.

Previous rumors were groundbreaking to occur by end of year but it sounds unlikely now. Also, nice to see that one of the City reps wasn't blowing smoke up my you-know-what when they originally relayed this info to me:

"It's a different project," he said. "Separate; independent."

Executives from Clayco, the general contractor on the project, also declined to explain why construction has stopped except to say Clayco is not having any financial difficulties.

I heard they were redesigning it to be 550' and the shut-down is temporary until the new height increase is accounted for into construction.


Ok, now that I'm back to reality, there's a labor dispute with a contractor.

Seems unesscesqary and hard to enforce. And what is with the unending desire to punish felons? Sex offenders fair enough but if you have a felony from decades past for some random crime like burglary or tax evasion there is already a huge number of income streams you are blocked from. Now you can’t even rent out a room in your own home? Why?

Ok, now that I'm back to reality, there's a labor dispute with a contractor.
Anything from a subcontractor blowing up and falling through to a scope of work disagreement to pay to insurance, all are common and all can halt work.

I wouldn’t worry unless it drags on for more than a month.

I was under the impression the short-term rental companies do the bulk of that enforcement work to stay in compliance with local laws.

Took a nice long walk yesterday, since it was so nice! Grabbed a few updated pics! None of Moon Tower, though. Walked by that on Thursday night when we had dinner at Farish. Moon Tower looks super sharp! The first floor treatment and coffee shop is nice!

Man some of these buildings are really flying. I'm downtown often and each time i'm blown away with how fast things are going up.

A historic church destroyed by fire in downtown Phoenix is ​​being converted into an event venue with restaurants and bars.

First Baptist Church, built in 1929 at Monroe Street and Third Avenue, is on track to reopen next spring as Monroe Street Abbey. The first tenants of the large Gothic building are an event planner and a caterer. A restaurant and a speakeasy are to follow next.

“We’re already showing the abbey to couples who want to get married there because it’s a unique place,” said Terry Goddard, a longtime Arizona politician and community leader. “And luckily they don’t deter the pigeons that have been living in the building.”

He said the building had a rocky past.

Goddard has been fighting to save the former church with its steeple and stained glass windows since 1992, when it was scheduled to be demolished. A fire in 1984 burned down the roof, but left most of the walls standing.

The former nave, where grass and weeds now grow, will be converted into an event garden.

“It will be an indoor/outdoor venue and there is nothing like it in the city,” said Trista Croce, owner of BTS Event Management, which signed a lease for space at Monroe Abbey on Friday. “It looks European.”

Caterer Noelle Townsley, who owns Fresh from the Kitchen, has also signed a lease for space at Abby. She said the historic building would be a great location for weddings and other events that would attract people.

Millions of dollars have already been spent purchasing the church and reinforcing fire-damaged walls.

Goddard said another $6.6 million in Local Initiatives Support Corporation funds and historic property tax credits will fund the remainder of the church’s renovation.

Terry Benelli, executive director of LISC Phoenix, said the group’s mission is to take a comprehensive look at community redevelopment, including housing, small business, health clinics, education, community organizing, commercial development and historic preservation.

“We see the abbey as an important, missing third place for the city center,” she said. “With all the redevelopment currently taking place and planned in the neighborhood, it is important to save some of the more important structures from demolition and keep them open to the public.”

Goddard said renovations to the church would begin in 2020. But then COVID-19 came and the tenant contracts fell through.

“I knew this building had fallen on hard times, but it was worth preserving it and making it a meeting place for people,” he said. “We are nearly there.”

Good to see this moving again!

Now the rehab is scheduled to take place for the First Baptist Church and the Goodwill store work well underway at 3rd Ave and Van Buren, does anyone know what the plan is for the 2 parcels on the SWC (directly north from the Church)? Looks to be owned by the "Housing Opportunity Center".

Edit: Never mind, didn't realize the HOC also owns the church. Probably will be used for parking for the foreseeable future.
