[QUOTE=KevinW;9432215]A little while back ER did a post on the Riviera tract. I must say, based on this photo:

you must not play any golf. I would recognize the Riviera Country Club Clubhouse anywhere. This photo is taken from north of Sunset. The tract office was just south of Sunset and the Clubhouse is about two blocks south of that. The actual Golf course is in the canyon behind the clubhouse.

Here's a more famous angle of it:

https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/c...5/DSC_8796.JPG

It does look like the RCC Clubhouse, but ....

Here's the tract office far right in a detail from the orginal picture and the other "building" to the left edge.

Here's a 1928 aerial with the tract office in the blue circle and the RCC Clubhouse in the green box. To get that view of the tract office in the original picture,
the photographer must have been south and a little west of it.

https://i.imgur.com/fq9gwil.jpg

The RCC Clubhouse would not appear in the original picture to the left of the tract office.

I think it is an amalgam of two houses (red arrows) at the corner of Sunset and Napoli Drive (13701 Sunset Blvd and 1310 Napoli Dr).

I imagine this view is from the top of the Sears Building as well.

Look at the neon!

The Water and Power Dept. Building in the far distance is. .um. .bright!... I guess they weren't too concerned about the cost of electricity since they're the power company. ;)

.

It wouldn't be the LADWP building between the Richfield tower and the microwave tower. I'm pretty sure its the Unocal building, even though there's no hint of the angle in the middle. The super bright building to its right might be the top of the Edison building. (Two other companies in the energy biz.) I did work out that the building behind the "a" in "Vintage" is at 7th and Mill St.

Interesting deduction, Mackerm....I'll have to look at it more closely.

I just happened upon this slide of the Farmers Market dated 1970.

I've been trying to figure out in what direction we're looking and what part of the Farmers Market this is. Nothing looks familiar.

Of the moving cars I recognize the Ford Mustang in the lower left corner but I don't recognize the other two.

Here are some close-ups.

I'm especially intrigued by the 70s looking mens misc. store. It doesn't seem very farmers markety....."What's that dang mens store doing here?" :farmer:

Upon closer inspection I'm pretty sure the blue sedan turning left is European. (hmm. . .are those head-rests or speakers in the back window?)

As you can see, the stand-alone building is headquarters to. . .um. . .something.

RPPC Treasure Trove

A few weeks ago I posted a RPPC labled Moneta, Cal 1907 from eBay. I just discovered that the seller, collector-ca, has sold and is currently selling hundreds of early 20th century images from California and other western states. Many are from the L.A. area.
They as described as being from the Ron Lerch collection. Apparently Mr. Lerch was a noted collector of western historical items who passed away a few years ago.

A few interesting samples:

Yes, it is Unocal. The fairly tall building in the foreground just to the left of Richfield is probably the 250', 20 floor United Ca. Bank building on Spring St, one of the first built after the height limit was lifted. Two others visible left of Richfield are the Tishman office building, also 250' and the slightly shorter Sinclair Oil building just across the Harbor Freeway. If this pic was taken after 1964/65 you would also see the Occidental Insurance building with a fancy restsurant on top, 452', 32 floors, a bit to the left out of the picture. Still there of course, but with a USC sign and no restaurant. By 1967/68, One Wilshire (30 floors), Union Bank (42 floors), City National (26), and Crocker Citizens tower (43 floors) would have been added, and Richfield would have still been there.

Hi all,

I was wondering if anyone might be able to assist me finding record (an address, if possible) of a pool hall on Heliotrope called the Crooked Cue? Was apparently defunct at some point before 1982 and turned into a rehearsal studio.

I've not been able to find any record of it, though I did find a Blevins Billiards at 665 Heliotrope in 1973 (which might be correct) and a Crooked Stick Pool Hall all the way over on 4807 Central Ave, which I don't think is the right one.

Apparently the phone number for the address was 662-6982, active well into 1985. I'm fairly sure it was just off Melrose Avenue.

Any help would be much appreciated!

Maynard L. Parker was one of the great chroniclers of So Cal mid-century architecture and interior design....several of his images out of the Huntington Library collection have been posted here, I searched and could not find these....undated but judging by the automobiles and furnishings I would guess about 1940....no address provided but I am fairly certain we are looking at 1634 18th St. in Santa Monica, see below....

I drove by the former location of Brotherton's Farm House in Pasadena last weekend and it kindled my dim (but fond) memories of the place. It was such a great time machine place and it inspired my young imagination.

Brotherton's opened in 1937 at 2239 E. Colorado Blvd. The site is now a mini-mall. Their great-grandsons have opened a restaurant in Hermosa Beach called Baran's 2239 using that old address. https://www.latimes.com/food/dailydi...nap-story.html

Here's 10 Min. of Los Angeles/Hollywood streets. Some sharped eyed people have nailed this as 1941 but the title says 1930s which appears to be a bit off.

Movie signs etc., denote this as 1941 era. So its just before entry into WW II.

"1973 Press Photo: Los Angeles, California Apartment Building Swept by Fire."

Does anyone recognize this apartment building?

Luckily, there is a sign in front of the building.

This sign.

I believe the large word is "Apartment" but the words above it are too fuzzy (and small) to read.

The newspaper clipping on the back isn't any help.

I don't know why 1967 was written in ink when the actual fire was in 1973.

mystery train wreck.

"Original Photograph City Of Los Angeles TRAIN WRECK Engine Scene Of Accident."

Of course the crash could have happened anywhere along the route but the landscape sure looks like California.

I'm especially intrigue by this part of the wreck.

It appears to be the engine of the 'City of Los Angeles' but it's facing the wrong way.

And finally, here's a closer look at the Bonds and Stamps rail car.

I wonder how soon after the crash the photograph was taken.

UP City of Los Angeles Wreck

Cliff's Notes: The wreck occurred on November 12, 1951 at a siding called Wyutah which, as you might surmise, was near the Utah-Wyoming border. One passenger train traveling at 77 mph rear-ended another traveling at 2 mph, killing 11 pasengers and six crew members. The accident occurred in blizzard conditions.

Much more detail and discussion and a link to the full ICC accident report can be found in the Trains Magazine comments thread here: http://cs.trains.com/trn/f/111/p/18356/265669.aspx

That was the Stratford Apartments, 1735 W 6th St, NEC of Burlington-- built 1909, burned 1973, remains of it demolished early '74.

It appears (somewhere) in this USCDL panorama:

It seems a lot of apartments in that area were/are firetraps.

My partner used to work in an office building near Wilshire and Vermont, and looking south/southeast from the upper floors, he said it was common to see a building on fire with black smoke coming out of it, and then the sound of sirens and the rush of firemen to the site. Kinda sad...

Utah-Wyoming border! ..I was way off the mark on this one.

Here's an accident closer to home.

Coldwater Canyon Avenue near Saticoy in North Hollywood(?)....December 4, 1963.

"Mrs. Lena De Prisco, 44, 7931 Emelita St., North Hollywood, owes her life today to an unknown hero who pulled her from auto as Southern Pacific freight train bore down on machine stalled on tracks.
Frightened near-victim told Traffic Officer W. E. Meyer she "froze" on rail crossing at Coldwater Canyon Avenue near Saticoy Avenue.

Lena was a lucky lady.

Rescue operations under glare of huge searchlights continue throughout night in wake of Southern California's biggest railroad disaster which killed 29 persons and injured 120 passengers
after two car San Diego commuter rolled on its side while rounding a curve at Soto Street and Washington Boulevard in Los Angeles.

I remember watching the post-wreck coverage by Bill Welsh doing remote reporting on KTTV. A subsequent book published a few years ago about the type of equipment involved devoted an entire chapter to this incident.

IIRC, the engineer claimed during the resulting investigation that he "blacked out" before heading into that curve near Redondo Jct. and the two-car train actually speeded up rather than slowing down. The resultant derailment was particularly gruesome for some of the fatally injured passengers. The equipment itself was eventually repaired and banished to secondary runs in Kansas and Oklahoma (I think). Bad scene all around.

As a 13 year old I remember live coverage of the crash on Channel 5. When I was in the Navy I rode those San Diegans from L.A. to S.D. and did not like the feeling, I guess from seeing that wreck. I rode the regular train and did not have that feeling..

I rode the regular train and did not have that feeling.

Perhaps that's because the regular train was much heavier than the lightweight, transit-like San Diegan. ..(an uneducated guess)

Not to be overly morbid but here's a bit more on the 1956 accident.

Wow. .that's big! :stunned:

If there's a back door, it looks like the hotel kitchen is receiving a large sack of potatoes (or onions).
