[QUOTE=KevinW;9432215]A little while back ER did a post on the Riviera tract. I must say, based on this photo:
Quote:
It does look like the RCC Clubhouse, but .... Here's the tract office far right in a detail from the orginal picture and the other "building" to the left edge. https://i.imgur.com/Jj7sBhw.jpg hdl.huntington.org Here's a 1928 aerial with the tract office in the blue circle and the RCC Clubhouse in the green box. To get that view of the tract office in the original picture, the photographer must have been south and a little west of it. https://i.imgur.com/fq9gwil.jpg mil.library.ucsb.edu The RCC Clubhouse would not appear in the original picture to the left of the tract office. I think it is an amalgam of two houses (red arrows) at the corner of Sunset and Napoli Drive (13701 Sunset Blvd and 1310 Napoli Dr). https://i.imgur.com/z6y4J7l.jpg Google Maps |

:previous: Interesting deduction, Mackerm....I'll have to look at it more closely. . . but first I just happened upon this slide of the Farmers Market dated 1970. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...922/hRfqUU.jpg eBay I've been trying to figure out in what direction we're looking and what part of the Farmers Market this is. Nothing looks familiar. Of the moving cars I recognize the Ford Mustang in the lower left corner but I don't recognize the other two. Here are some close-ups. I'm especially intrigued by the 70s looking mens misc. store. It doesn't seem very farmers markety....."What's that dang mens store doing here?" :farmer: https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...922/7NBx5R.jpg detail Upon closer inspection I'm pretty sure the blue sedan turning left is European. (hmm. . .are those head-rests or speakers in the back window?) https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...923/7zBp6h.jpg detail As you can see, the stand-alone building is headquarters to. . .um. . .something. Does anyone know what kind of car those two girls driving? (well actually, only one of the girls is driving) . |

:previous: Well that was fast! ..Thx Hoss :) I believe we've talked about these do-hickys in the past. . .but Bird House. .or. . Air Vent? https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...922/GIC3Nw.jpg detail . . .or a combination of both? It even has the dowels for the birds to stand on. hmmm..If it's also a vent you might end up with asphyxiated birds. There's also one at mens misc. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/6...924/mF0aaT.jpg . |
Quote:
But I checked a 1970 phone directory, and here's the Men's Misc store at the correct address. https://i.postimg.cc/YqCm60Mr/Mens.jpg So I too am puzzled about what part of the Farmer's Market we're looking at. |

RPPC Treasure Trove
A few weeks ago I posted a RPPC labled Moneta, Cal 1907 from eBay. I just discovered that the seller, collector-ca, has sold and is currently selling hundreds of early 20th century images from California and other western states. Many are from the L.A. area.
They as described as being from the Ron Lerch collection. Apparently Mr. Lerch was a noted collector of western historical items who passed away a few years ago. Hi all,
I was wondering if anyone might be able to assist me finding record (an address, if possible) of a pool hall on Heliotrope called the Crooked Cue? Was apparently defunct at some point before 1982 and turned into a rehearsal studio. I've not been able to find any record of it, though I did find a Blevins Billiards at 665 Heliotrope in 1973 (which might be correct) and a Crooked Stick Pool Hall all the way over on 4807 Central Ave, which I don't think is the right one. Apparently the phone number for the address was 662-6982, active well into 1985. I'm fairly sure it was just off Melrose Avenue. Any help would be much appreciated! |

Bristolian, thanks so much for posting the wonderful rppcs! I spent way too much time looking at them. :) I especially liked the balloon photograph and the Glendora Livery Stable photograph. re: Farmers Market Ebay slide Quote:

Maynard L. I drove by the former location of Brotherton's Farm House in Pasadena last weekend and it kindled my dim (but fond) memories of the place. It was such a great time machine place and it inspired my young imagination.
Brotherton's opened in 1937 at 2239 E. Colorado Blvd. The site is now a mini-mall. Their great-grandsons have opened a restaurant in Hermosa Beach called Baran's 2239 using that old address. https://www.latimes.com/food/dailydi...nap-story.html https://southbay.goldenstate.is/family-style-4/ https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...602bd3e1_z.jpg (Highland Park News Herald and Journal 11.24.63) https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...0b9e5f32_z.jpg(Roger Martin/Facebook) https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...558d8b1d_b.jpg (You know You Are From Old School Pasadena When............./Facebook) |

Here's 10 Min. of Los Angeles/Hollywood streets. Some sharped eyed people have nailed this as 1941 but the title says 1930s which appears to be a bit off. Movie signs etc., denote this as 1941 era. So its just before entry into WW II. |

UP City of Los Angeles Wreck
Cliff's Notes: The wreck occurred on November 12, 1951 at a siding called Wyutah which, as you might surmise, was near the Utah-Wyoming border. One passenger train traveling at 77 mph rear-ended another traveling at 2 mph, killing 11 pasengers and six crew members. The accident occurred in blizzard conditions.

It seems a lot of apartments in that area were/are firetraps. My partner used to work in an office building near Wilshire and Vermont, and looking south/southeast from the upper floors, he said it was common to see a building on fire with black smoke coming out of it, and then the sound of sirens and the rush of firemen to the site. Sadly, this accident at Soto Street and Washington Boulevard was more tragic...January 23, 1956 https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...923/oepL5h.jpg lapl Rescue operations under glare of huge searchlights continue throughout night in wake of Southern California's biggest railroad disaster which killed 29 persons and injured 120 passengers after two car San Diego commuter rolled on its side while rounding a curve at Soto Street and Washington Boulevard in Los Angeles. . |
I remember watching the post-wreck coverage by Bill Welsh doing remote reporting on KTTV. A subsequent book published a few years ago about the type of equipment involved devoted an entire chapter to this incident.
IIRC, the engineer claimed during the resulting investigation that he "blacked out" before heading into that curve near Redondo Jct. and the two-car train actually speeded up rather than slowing down. The resultant derailment was particularly gruesome for some of the fatally injured passengers. The equipment itself was eventually repaired and banished to secondary runs in Kansas and Oklahoma (I think). Bad scene all around. |
