The fifth house on the right looks like a very old Victorian. And it's amazing it is still surviving so close of the business district. It would be nice if someone finds out a photo of it.

Used very effectively in "LA Confidential" (1997)

Neutra also used huge windows that reached the ceiling in the stairways at Emerson Middle School, WLA. The effect is now lessened by acoustic tiles having been glued to the ceiling.

Has anyone heard of 'Sunny Court'?

-note the 1309...but what was the road called in 1908 before it became Roosevelt Highway (and later Pacific Coast Highway)

Well, I wasn't familiar with Hazel Forbes so I did some googling.

"Hazel Forbes (Hazel Froidevoux), Miss United States 1926 (at age 16), Ziegfeld girl, actress, dancer and millionairess.

"At the age of 21, she married Paul Owen Richmond of Ohio (her second marriage), heir to a toothpaste fortune.
After less than a year of marriage, Richmond died at the age of 47, leaving Forbes with $2.2 million -- about $35 million today!"

After Richmond’s death, Forbes went to Hollywood, where she appeared in uncredited supporting roles in “Bachelor Bait” and
“Down to Their Last Yacht,” both produced by RKO in 1934. Because of the money she was left by Richmond, she donated her salary to charity."

During her time with Ziegfeld, Forbes was photographed by Alfred Cheney Johnston. After Johnston's death in 1971, a collection of nude and semi-nude photos of Forbes
was discovered among his possessions. Since the photos could never have been used to publicly promote the Follies in the 1920s, it has been speculated that the images
were either taken by Johnston as samples of his artistic work, or were done at the request of Ziegfeld for his private collection.

Hazel Forbes died in Los Angeles on Nov. 19. 1980. Forbes and her mother are interred in a small semi-private room at Forest Lawn.
The crypt also features a statue of a woman who would have fit in perfectly in a Ziegfeld show.

The artwork caught my eye. Thought of Evelyn when I saw the picture at right; also very interesting to see, in such a stark modern space, an image of ancient Rome (the Arch of Constantine)...kind of a relief in that as good as much of it is, and as popular as it now is, I'm glad the whole world isn't MCM.


In this fragment from another of Hoss's images of the Crescent Professional Building, the image at far left appears to be a watercolor of the nwc of Bergdorf-Goodman and the Plaza Hotel toward Central Park, from Fifth Ave.... Maybe the occupant of the office wanted a reminder of home. (Way before the experience of Fifth Ave in these parts was ruined...but that's another story, and not for NLA.)

That statue in the Forbes room in Forest Lawn looks like it could have been by Evelyn Nesbit. Unlikely, but a weird connection if so.

"SHE CASHES IN"--yes she does.... It seems that Hazel blazed the trail for "actresses" who would have been forgotten completely if they hadn't inherited money to pay for self-promotion (I wonder what really happened to Mr. Richmond...although I haven't seen any allusions to his bedtime milk having been poisoned or anything like that). Hazel Forbes is mentioned dozens and dozens of times in gossip columns during the '30s, never in connection with actually working in pictures but rather out and about in Hollywood trolling for publicity and a new husband (which she found in the form of song and dance man Harry Richman...she did like "Rich" men...). You wonder if the columnists got their own new Packards. Anyway, I wondered where she lived...in addition to a house in the Springs, she was listed in the 1938 Beverly Hills CD at 604 N Hillcrest...

The same thing crossed my mind when I read he died at the relatively young age of 47.

His company produced Lyon's Toothpaste so I googled it.

This image came up and a wave of nostalgia and happy memories overwhelmed me.

This is the tooth POWDER my paternal grandparents used.

We brushed with toothpaste at our house so this 'powder' business was completely alien to us & quite a novelty.

During our visit we'd brush our teeth four or five times a day just so we could use their powder. lol

Richmond (47) married Forbes (21) the year following the death of his wife of 23 years. There were no children from his first marriage. His parents and siblings predeceased him. Forbes gave up her stage career, as her husband asked her to, and devoted herself to him. After his death the next year (pneumonia), Forbes accompanied the body to Richmond's Ohio hometown so he could be laid to rest next to his first wife.

I've cut this Julius Shulman photoset down from eight pictures to four. It's "Job 2278: Kanner and Mayer, Chandler's (Pasadena, Calif.), 1956".

I found an address of 380 South Lake Avenue, which was opposite Bullock's Pasadena (you can see "380" above the door in the image above). To emphasize how big the store was, it's been replaced by the Burlington Arcade.

For the life of me I couldn't remember where it was located.

I wonder if the Monarch had a separate coffee shop that might have continued the theme.

I recently discovered the old KKK Hall in Long Beach is still standing (it's now a church)
but my information is on my other computer in Lafayette. I'll post about it when I return.

That said, I think in 1923 Los Angeles would have had it's own hall. So I'm guessing the photograph above isn't the hall in L.B.
Of course, I could be wrong.
