Here's an earlier reddit where the aerial photo was discussed, and the link to the nifty National Archives page where it appeared. One eagle-eyed redditor said that you can see the Eastern Columbia building under construction, and dated it to March-June 1930

Thanks for that--I removed the "1943" reference from my post.

Screen grabs from "Motor Patrol", a low-budget 1950 release focusing on the motorcycle officers of the LAPD Traffic Division.....https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BiyM...CinemaClassics....

Early in the picture there's a brief shot of the recently covered Hangman's Tree Inn, the noose remains but the corpse of Reseda Red has been removed....

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...720&fit=bounds

Most of the exteriors are in mid-Wilshire, this garage is central to the plot....

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...720&fit=bounds

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...720&fit=bounds

The picture ends, of course, with a chase sequence....here the pursuit turns left from the 800 block of N. Figueroa St., and onto an overpass crossing the 110 Freeway.....

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...720&fit=bounds

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...720&fit=bounds

Then a right turn onto what was then a continuation of Figueroa St., this street is now known as Figueroa Terrace....

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...720&fit=bounds

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...720&fit=bounds

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...720&fit=bounds

The pole sign for the Mayo Motel is visible on the left, the motel was located at 840 N. Figueroa.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...720&fit=bounds

An apartment building now occupies the Mayo Motel site.

Removed. Maybe kidnapped more like.

I wonder if the scene was shot while this sorry affair was happening?

And seemingly the corpse was a lady to boot. :stunned:

Excellent 'Motor Patrol' post, riichkay. . .thoroughly interesting 'now & thens' screengrabs. Good job!

Let me check to see if I have any mystery slides that I've come across recently.

I found four. :)

I'm almost certain this first slide was taken somewhere on Sunset Blvd.

Judging by the cars (reflections in the window) I'd say it was taken in the. .um. .late 1960s. . .or early 1970s?

The Patio Hamburger's (note the apostrophe) MISSING WORD (1980s?)

The half-faced dude behind the post looks like me in the 1980s. .I'm trying to remember if I was ever there. (if we figure out the location maybe it will ring a bell)

e_r, I'm dubious about this candidate, but perhaps it's Cassell's Patio at 3300 W. 6th:

https://i.postimg.cc/SNwkpyqZ/Patio-LAT-1976-10-19.jpg
LA Times, 10/19/1976

The seating shown in the photo is not arguably "in the parking lot"; but it could be that what is shown did not comprise the full complement of tables available.

According to a note in the LA Times of August 2, 1977, it was by that date under new management, and so in due course might have dropped the "Cassell's."

The Stephen M. White statue has been discussed extensively, but what about its amazing pedestal? What happened to it? The statue was relocated twice, each time with a less impressive perch.

But the original pedestal was enormous, and enormously expensive. The project had of budget of $25,000 dollars in 1906. A series of granite steps held its base - a six-foot cube of white California granite. Not quite as large as the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier (a 56 ton block of marble).

One has to wonder what Mr. White did to inspire such a tribute.

Healdsburg Tribune

The contract for the pedestal itself went to the Raymond Granite Co. of Raymond, California for $8,975.

hmm. . .possibly, odinthor, but it still doesn't ring a bell. I briefly lived on 6th St. but it was west of Fairfax. . .quite a distance from Cassel's.

GaylordWilshire, thanks for locating the two Sunset Blvd. mystery slides. :) I really appreciate it.

The New Yorker has posted an interesting piece re Dennis Hopper's iconic "Double Standard" photo.... https://www.newyorker.com/culture/cu...ht-los-angeles

The article re-dates the image to '63/'64, replacing Hopper's recollection of 1961.
