Go there and walk south down 11th Avenue from 34th to 30th You can get a great view from the middle of that stretch of sidewalk between 35 and 15 Hudson Yards.

When you reach 30th Street turn right (West) and climb the stairs to the High Line and go past the kids play area towards the river (near the fence that separates the interim walkway from the finished walkway) and you can see it from that angle (and possibly some of the pieces yet to be lifted in the Western Rail Yard).

Then, while still on the High Line, walk East to the Coach Building's (10 Hudson Yards) courtyard off the High Line near 15 Hudson Yards' Culture Shed and you can get a great view from there over the construction fence.

You can also get a great view of it from the small bit of Hudson Park at the 34th Street Subway (7 Train) entrance/exit.

yeah, the coach tower courtyard up on the highline is as close as you can get to the vessel.

i like the view of it from the north side straight across the yards right when you come up out of the hudson yards 7 train subway station too.

Yup.

Was quick wasn't it?

For the complexity that was involved, it hauled. Granted the whole HY project when you think about it hauled. It seemed like the foundation and covering of the rails along with the subsurface work took the longest. But the whole district is coming alive. And... we still got phase II to look forward too!

^ Yeah, I told some people in the city it would be topped out by the end of the year, and they didn't believe me.

“Vessel is one of the most complex pieces of steelwork ever made,” Heatherwick said in a statement. “Over the next few months we’ll focus on installing the final details of the structure, as its paving, balustrades, lighting and cladding come together to complete this different kind of public space.”

I'm guessing once tourists find out about this it will be one of the most photographed things in the city, sort of like the Chicago Bubble. That's a bad ass photo looking down to the bottom, like an MC Escher drawing.

i sincerely hope they are prepared for the logistical nightmare its going to be managing the crowds on this thing--timed (free) ticketed entry is the only i can imagine this not turning into a disaster.

I think the percentage of tourist who will actually try to get to the top will be less than 50%, but still enough to be swarmed. I was thinking about that as I made my way up a few flights from Penn Station earlier..;)

But this will be the Times Square/Rockefeller Center of the west side. And the ever popular High Line feeds right into it.
