It has dozens of photographs of the history of the Hollywood Bowl from the beginning! While there seems to be no mention
of those areas being water, there are photos like this one (from 1926) that show those same areas, more or less.

Gail Russell

Gail Russell made a number of movies in the 1940's and 1950's, including Angel and the Badman with John Wayne:

However, she had a slight drinking problem:

On July 6, 1957, she drove her car through the front of Jan's Restaurant at 8424 Beverly Blvd. One of several alcohol related incidents.

A smidgen of Santa Barbara on Sunset?

6530 Sunset Blvd. Before Cats, Fiddles and Travis Banton - the quaintly designed structure was known as the [Fred]Thompson building.

According to the caption, Earl C. Anthony provided this Packard 120 to lead the Flag Day parade that opened the Los Angeles baseball season in 1935. Can anyone id the location? What's with the leaning clocktower?

NLA member MichaelRyerson has the same picture in his Flickr collection. His caption, below, identifies it as N. Spring:

Flag Day Parade, Los Angeles, 1935

Brand-spanking new 1935 Packard 120 leading parade on Flag Day, opening the baseball season in Los Angeles. Parade is headed south on N. Spring Street with Fort Moore Hill, the Alhambra Apartments and a corner of the Hall of Justice in the background. Packard Company file photograph of a 1935 Packard three-quarter front left view, top folded, sign on side reads "The new Packard 120 Earle C. Anthony, Inc.," male driver with four baseball players for passengers. Inscribed on photo back: Packard one twenty, model 120, twelfth series, 8-cylinder, 110-horsepower, 120-inch wheelbase, 2/4-person convertible coupe (body type #899), from Earle C. Anthony, Inc. L.A., Packard west coast distributor, 1935 California dealer plate #2C DLR 208.

Maybe a better question would be: "Why is that clock tower without a building beneath it and apparently just sitting at the edge of a parking lot?"

Now that I think of it, I realize it might be part of a parade float...? Looks like a guard tower at San Quentin....

Thanks, Hoss, for the id--

Thanks, Hoss, for the id--

With the enlarged image we see the clock tower is behind what appears to be the roof of an open cab truck but the tower is still askew in relation to the roof and doesn't appear to belong to whatever it is that is on the bed of the truck. Weird! Suspect that will remain a mystery just as the answer to the question of why open cab designed trucks persisted well into the 1930s.

Weyl was listed in the '29 Directory at 6536 Sunset, clearly the Thompson building location. (Weyl had partnered with Henry Gogerty from '25 to '28.) "Carl Jules" appears at the bottom right of the Thompson building sketch. It has probably been noted several times that in addition to the above, Weyl had some responsibility for the Wilshire Brown Derby, now a Wilshire adjacent terra cotta bathing cap, below.

No surprise that Weyl or Weyl's associates had something to do with designing this building.

More examples of his work have been mentioned on this thread: 6654 Hollywood Boulevard Building; Atkin Investment Company Rental Office Building, Los Angeles; Baine Building, Hollywood; Bendix Building; Pacific National Bank Branch, Leimert Park;Palace Theatre, Hollywood; York Boulevard State Bank, Highland Park; and Yucca Vine Tower, Hollywood.

What I know of LA, I've learned on this site. Judging by the hill in the background, it could be Bunker Hill. The windows on the building, also in the background, are varied in size and position. I looked at some old photos of Bunker Hill and found a building that looks similar.

I could be completely wrong.

I think HossC has it correctly pegged as Ft. Moore Hill here.

Now I'm thinking that the tower belongs to a large model of Wrigley Field:

I think you could be right about the Wrigley Field clock tower, GW. I never realized that the clock spelled out "WRIGLEY FIELD" instead of using numbers.

Jan's is a good coffee shop. The breakfasts are hearty. They have a cool Italian Zummo orange juicing machine. Cops eat there regularly. :)
