GW beat me to it! In 1898, Craig, Stuart & Co. was at 112 S. Los Angeles - I think the number "112" is just visible to the left of the word "CRAIG" on the façade. I've included the other grocers as there are some familiar names in the list. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...raigStuart.jpg LAPL |

You can tell it's a Packard by the hexagonal stampings in the wheel hubs and by the radiator shape. The mirror-looking thing is a windshield, and I suppose that's just a jumpseat on the running board. Must be a custom body. |
I've had this oddity in one of my files for quite some time.
http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/850/8dh2.jpg old file/probably ebay It says Hollywood Calif on the truck, but North Hollywood at lower right. To be honest, I thought this was a girl at first. I was mislead by the banana curls. __ |

Howard Hughes Linden Dr Beverly Hills crash site
We've see other posts here on this thread about the time Howard Hughes crashed is failing aircraft into a couple of houses on North Linden Drive in Beverly Hills while heading for the LA Country Club, but I don't recall seeing this one. It was a lot more cinematic when they recreated it for "The Aviator"!

From Googie's to Pippy's?

Here's an exterior view I just found of the Elizabeth Arden store at 3933 Wilshire Blvd. on the corner of Gramercy Place, next to what looks like quite a dandy bar called “The Bachelors.” Maybe the husbands hung out there while the wives got massaged and facialed and gussied up at Elizabeth Arden. This photo is circa 1935.

House fire at Witmer and Wilshire blvd. circa 1984.
GW, do you know what house this was? http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...0/822/pd0o.jpg ebay the site today http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/800...0/834/yk4r.jpg GSV When I glance to the right I thought I had discovered something very cool when I noticed a house hiding behind a facade on the SW corner of Witmer and Wilshire. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...90/34/gu0n.jpg GSV so I quickly hovered for a better look. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...90/31/2jwt.jpg google_earth wow...just wow! It doesn't get much cooler than that. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...90/34/ycib.jpg GSV If I lived in L.A. I would go to dinner here tonight just to see the inside of this amazing place. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...0/703/h9ci.jpg GSV Alas, GaylordWilshire posted about this house way back on March of 2011: http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/show...postcount=3431 ..but as far as I can tell, no one has been able to dig up a vintage photograph of this house. So much for my big discovery. lol. :) but I also noticed this ghost sign behind the mystery house. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...90/89/ufrd.jpg GSV above: The map in GW's post says this was the Prince Ruppert Apts. __ |
...and while I was in the area
Looking south from Witmer and Wilshire you have a good vantage point of the old Mayfair Hotel on 7th Street. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...0/845/eghe.jpg GSV It used to have a roof-top sign. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...0/854/x6vq.jpg http://www.mayfairla.com/gallery/ http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...0/854/phgf.jpg http://www.mayfairla.com/gallery/ http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...90/35/9qnz.jpg http://www.mayfairla.com/gallery/ It appears the Mayfair (built in 1926) has been spruced up recently. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...0/845/4x1n.jpg http://cdn.blvds.com/files/2012/08/h...s-angeles.jpeg http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...90/34/swch.jpg http://cdn.blvds.com/files/2012/08/h...s-angeles.jpeg |
Oh, and I almost forgot, the Mayfair Hotel was also featured on L.A. Noire.

Assuming that's the original house at 1298 Wilshire (originally Orange St), which from the roofline it appears to be, it was lived in in the late '90s until at least 1909 by Frederick E. Fay, who was the secretary-treasurer of his father Elon's Empire Steam Laundry. (The Fay house was robbed in June 1899.) By 1911 it appears to have become a boarding house. I still haven't seen a vintage shot of the house across Witmer from it. |
