It's a 11 story Bekins Building that dates back to 1926. (1025 N. Highland Ave.)

Architect John Paul Krempel (1861-1933), who later partnered with Walter Erkes (1884-1961), also designed the post-bombing LA Times building for General Otis.
Some Krempel/Erkes buildings remain, like the Matthias Apartments on the SW corner of 18th and Flower and Engine Co. No. 28 at 644 S. Figueroa.

That's 3438 Sabina, not Sabrina, and I would guess it was the destination address. The property seems to have just barely survived the coming of the 60 freeway. It is marked as 3438 1/2 Sabina - the front end of the property got a chunk sliced off, leaving only the housing at the back.

Thanks for posting this postcard view. As a child, I spent the better part of three summers at the Westwood Manor. My family would travel out to LA from Texas usually on the old Sunset Limited. My grandmother accompanied us, but she preferred to stay at the Miramar in Santa Monica where she would play cards with other old ladies every afternoon. We had family living in the Westwood area, so these long vacations included lots of time spent with relatives. There was only one tall building on that stretch of Wilshire, the apartment building on the NW corner of Beverly Glen and Wilshire. It was usually shrouded in smog circa 1951/52/53. I used to love the smell of smoggy air. Go figure.

Christopher Long, a professor of architecture at the University of Texas at Austin (he wrote the magazine article on Weber you posted quotes from) has written a full length biography of Kem Weber, which will come out later this year. I had a chance to read the draft, and it is SUPERB! The illustrations are really wonderful too. Long has written previously about Paul T. Frankl, as well as Adolph Loos and Josef Frank...

I noticed this little survivor while looking for Aero Industries...


Good shots of the school complex, ER. I was surprised to see that the buildings survived at all--pretty amazing that the lone pylon wasn't knocked down by a truck or something, somewhere along the line.

Is the round thing (that resembles a giant hand held mirror) in front of him a windshield?
..and is that small seat attached to the running board? Maybe this was used in filming.

That has been a vet's office for some time. I remember taking our cat there in the 60's. I don't remember what it was before that time.

In this photo I noticed a place called “The Numbers” if you look to the left of the couple in the color photo. It was a nightclub bar/restaurant. There doesn’t seem to be much info, or any photos, online, but apparently that was a notorious, famous, or infamous place, depending on who’s writing about it, and became known as a hustler bar where older men would go and exchange (or pick-up) numbers of young men. Literally and figuratively, I guess. Indications are it was known world-wide and celebrities could often be seen there. Apparently this location closed several years ago and tried to relocate in another West Hollywood area, briefly changing the name to Digits and then back to Numbers and now closed. I guess, with the advent of computers and the internet, a place like this to meet, gather and exchange info isn’t a necessity anymore? In it’s day it seems that its location was attractive to many men, as if they got a parking ticket, or worse, it wasn’t in a “gay neighborhood.”

And the drugstore turn into SCHWAB'S PHAPMACY. :haha:
