Haven’t tried the French bakery or coffee place but good to see retail continue to occupy space in downtown.

Any news on the 101 Central Bar? Or anything in high- profile spots like the newly renovated Heard building or the Wyndham hotel (Central and Adams)?

This contains some interesting information including a gplet for Palm Court I don't think I was aware of, and an interesting idea for Jackson Street.

And a new ugly rendering

Yea. That's terrible and I'm also a little confused on this. How is Will Bruder still working on the design when NADG owns the property?

Good architecture is always polarizing.

ASUSunDevil Sep 12, 2018 4:10 PM

Are we looking at the same rendering? I think it's gorgeous.

I agree with Biggus, although the previous green renderings might have been 'too polarizing.'

exit2lef Sep 12, 2018 4:12 PM

It's very Bruder, but potentially in a way that works at street level. It will be interesting to see more details.

Obadno Sep 12, 2018 4:33 PM

This appears to be an un-greened version of the "green" version but I thought the other rendering, which looks much better, was the current plan.

As for good architecture being polarizing, I dont think I could disagree more, good architecture should be fairly universally enjoyed, funcitonal, beautiful and contextual.

I know some of the more modern thought on that is to be a weirdo and treat buildings like modern art, I am not a fan of such philosophies. But what do I know I think 99% of modern art is hot garbage meant for money laundering

You're right, everyone thought Frank Lloyd Wright was just great. Super polarizing.

I didn't say it is.

You told me good architecture isn't polarizing. Frank Lloyd Wright was super polarizing in his day. I was making a point that yes, yes it is.

Is Frank Ghery polarizing?

CrestedSaguaro Sep 12, 2018 5:44 PM

After looking at the renderings on my PC instead of my phone, it doesn't look to bad. Not a skyline changer, but a good gap filler.

Still confused on why Will Bruder is still attached to this project. The lot was purchased by NADG and this is the rendering NADG posted on their website after the purchase and I believe NADG designs their own projects.

Ghery is trash. I really hate his buildings

biggus diggus Sep 12, 2018 5:48 PM

This is the definition of polarizing. You hate it, lots of others hate it, but he's one of the most influential architects around right now and generally considered a great.

Because Bruder is/was the architect, NADG is the developer.

We've seen three versions of this plan, the initial green glass one which I think was too expensive and impractical with wraparound glass (esp around an elevator core), the value-engineered version of that they released later, and now this one which doesn't look like anything.

I'd reserve judgment until anything is officially presented, Bruder could put a big pink glass elephant on his website and nobody would be the wiser.

Yeah there is a reason I dropped architecture school. It’s not for me haha

I have a few pretty prominent architect friends around the valley, I think the general consensus is Bruder is a magic man.

That would reinforce my impression that architects design buildings primarily to impress their fellow architects.
