This rare cardboard-backed photograph just showed up on eBay....Asking $124.95

Luckily, the address is written on the reverse.

But the seller wasn't content with just the address so they wrote to Ralphs for clarification.

reply.

Here is a view, from maybe ten years (or less) earlier (no earlier than 1904, no later than 1911), of that stretch of S. Spring.

S. Nordlinger & Sons is at 323 S. Spring.

Per our conversation (last week) about the swastika as a 'good luck' charm, pre-Nazi Germany.

A button advertising the Long Beach Elks Lodge #888 Carnival.

The "we rent houses" is interesting.... Who is we?... Is it E.H. Martin & Co or the lodge?

It looked like this on the tommyjones website.

This photo is not old and has perhaps just a hint of noir about it but I think it's absolutely amazing. It was in today's edition of the L.A. Times, taken by Brian van Der Brug. It reminds me of some of the photos taken by our own Notorious B.I.G. - Bill in Glendale.

Does anyone have an idea what this young man has hanging on his rear-view mirror? ..... . .because I'm stumped.

My only guess is. . .um. . .a football with legs..... :runaway:

Thanks for that, I was out last night and I could feel that weather in the photo. (It's been below normal temperatures in L.A. this December, even going down into the 30's one night! I love it! Rainy on occasion, too, and predicted again for Thursday and Friday.)

According to AccuWeather I was looking at this morning:

December average high: 68°
(Of the first three weeks of Dec. it's only gotten to that or above twice. Dec. 1st it was 73° and Dec. 18th it was 69°.)

December average low: 48°
(13 days in the 40's. 7 days in the 50's. 1 day in the 30's.)

Los Angeles averages one or two days in December when the thermometer reaches into the 80's °F.
(This year, not even close!)

Personally, I don't like it whenever the temperature goes over 70°!

Olive from Third to Court Streets

I never thought I would see it ! A front view of Olive Street between Third and Court Streets ! Beaudry (and several noirishers) will be like crazy ! In this video
California 1940s in color [60fps, Remastered] w/added sound NASS
which is comparable to the famous "A Drive through Bunker Hill 1940s", the car starts at the Angels Flight, goes to Second Street, turns and we see the Mission and the Minnewaska, passes two attractive ladies down 2ND, restarts back and turns on Olive to the Angel Flight (panoramic view on Olive at 1:15) and then the Astoria hotel on the right.

I arrived in L.A. about the time of this video. Those old cars were horrible, smelly, dirty and left heavy grease everywhere. Just look at the streets.

The people you see were nasty, mean and very perverted. Kind of like 2021.
Crime was everywhere and guns were common. If someone could cheat you, they did.

Yes, there were a few decent, polite people but believe me they were rare. One of the kind ones we met was Ozzie Nelson. He had a lovely wife and two little boys, David and Ricky. They were a couple years older than my brother and myself. They had a home with a pool in Hollywood. My father bought a near identicle home in 1957.

What has improved in L.A. since the 1940s....practically nothing. Its not the paradise that was promised....its much worse.

It seems the Elks building was one of several that made up Camp Cajon which was severely damaged by a flood in 1938.

A new Historical marker was dedicated in 1919. It is right next to Interstate 15.

Skyline starting to be first rate. By Olympics time, even better. Sure wish the Richfield Tower was still there as a beacon to the past. The ARCO twins could have worked around it. But in 1968 it was seen as a has been. Still have Eastern Columbia though and some others. Of course City Hall. And who doesn't love the Griffith Observatory? What an iconic structure and view.

This website is about the history of the swastika and provides an explanation as to why it is possible for swastikas in the early 1900s to be associated with the ensuing Nazi era.

I guess the ACCUWEATHER website for 2021 is wrong. Sorry for the error and a very Merry Christmas to you. Others say the Covid 19 Warpspeed vaccines are perfectly safe when many say they have killed thousands of jabbed people. You just don't know who to trust these days.
