God help me but I can't resist peeking into '40's/'50's bars, something so damn noirish about these places...here's The Huntress, Livingston Dr. and 2nd St., Long Beach on Aug. 1, 1949.....courtesy of the Long Beach Fireman's collection at Cal. State Dominguez Hills....

The camera-shy daytime drinkers take refuge in a back corner, save for a happy Huntress in the foreground booth.

The Huntress is a great name for a bar. ..I wonder if a woman owned it?

. . .maybe her name was Diana.

You beat me to Diana. Maybe that was Diana in the booth. Anybody recognize any of the (B?) movie stars in the blurry photos on the wall? Look at that old TV set above the bar. I wonder if it was a (madman) Muntz model? "Madman" Muntz. There's a good topic.

H looks like Veronica Lake. I Is Wiiliam Bendix. I think Q is Richard Widmark.

riichkay Feb 11, 2022 6:53 PM

"I" is William Bendix

"Q" is Richard Widmark

After that I'm not sure..."E" could be Cagney...."D" is maybe Ann Sheridan...

"G"...George Saunders?

The structure with "The Huntress" is gone; but its neighbor seems to be a survivor:

L = Barbara Stanwyck (?)

CaliNative Feb 12, 2022 2:37 AM

"O" might be Tyrone Power, or Walter Pigeon, but doubt they would be seen in a dive like this. More like a Bendix ("I")/Life of Reilly kind of place. The guy who made a joke of my hero Babe Ruth in his biopic. Stuck his tongue out while batting. The horror. If I had of run into him I would have challenged him to a duel to defend the late Bambino's honor. They gave the good biopic to Gehrig and the junky one to Ruth. But Babe got a cameo as himself in Pride of the Yankees and stole the picture. Babe always livened up wherever he was. Bendix as Ruth. Outrage.

Cagney would only eat there if he was making a movie nearby. Well there was that strange one in 1949, White Heat or something like that where he was a hoodlum close to mom. Some scenes filmed near Long Beach/L.A. Harbor area.

I doubt Stanwyck would be seen anywhere near there, nor would George Saunders ("G"?)

"H" might be Veronica Lake like someone said; hair is right, but she had a few imitators

"L" looks like young Princess Elisabeth, future queen. That would be quite a scoop if she was there.

Next to future Queen Elisabeth, "M" kind of looks like Paul Lynde of Bye Bye Birdie and Hollywood Squares, always in the center square with the hilarious quips. Everybody's favorite on that popular 1960s /'70s game show.

"B" looks like young Betty White. She was starting out about then. Rest in peace Betty/Sue Ann Nivens :wiseman:

Well there is a character in Raymond Chandler's "Trouble is My Business" (1938) named Harriet Huntress, so...

Sleuths, who will win the Super Bowl? What will the score be? Bragging rights to the winner.

Here's a look at the kitchen in The Huntress Bar.

If you look closely there is a 1949 'girly' calendar hanging on the wall. (turned to the month of July)

Farther in the back there are crates of Schiltz Beer and Carling's Ale stacked up.

And, what looks like, a clock(?) shaped like a Swan Boat. (planter?)

But more importantly, what's up with all the trophies in the front of the house. . .

. . .especially this gigantic one.

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/xq90/922/5V1acc.jpg

Is it some kind of aviation trophy?

There are more. . .

I was expecting bowling trophies but, no.

e_r, it appears to me that a number of the trophies incorporate the Marine Corps emblem:

Rams 31
Bengals 22

I've been a Rams fan since 1971 and have been disappointed too many times to count. I didn't want them to win when they were in St. Louis so they even let me down then. If they are ever going to win one in L.A., this looks like the year.
Why do I still get my hopes up?

Hope you are right. But if the Bengals find a way to win, I won't be too surprised. Very talented QB. And it is the year of the Tiger in the Chinese calendar. Plus the Bengals fans are long suffering. So I'll predict Bengals 21, Rams 17. I want the Rams to win but might be the year of the Tiger.

Things Change

Today, millions of eyeballs all over the world will be watching the Super Bowl taking place at the corner of Century Boulevard and Prairie Avenue. Here's a shot said to be from 1969 of that same corner. Interestingly, the developers of SoFi Stadium wanted to preserve the history of the infield lake from Hollywood Park "The Track of the Lakes and Flowers"
A new lake now sits prominently in front of the new stadium.
