POSTSCRIPT:

Nevermind...what I was thinking of ...is spelled Hemet

.

It is indeed German, and says:

Los Angeles, 23 June 1928

From our new homeland [heimat] the L. Richarz family sends you best greetings. __ __ [can't make out these words] taken in front of our new residence on March 20, 1928" I guess he's referring to the photo.

There's a possibility we have seen this on nla...but there's also a possibility we haven't. :)

That's such an amazing photo, ER - and taken from an angle I don't recall seeing before - so I felt like I had to do a little bit of restoration on the image:

I'd just like to say a few off-topic things:

1. I thoroughly support the prohibition against political posts. It's unpleasant and unproductive to interject comments that are not germane to the topic at hand and that only serve to divide us.

2. By "political," I mean expressions of political views that I agree with just as much as those that I do not.

3. I would hope that EVERYONE should be adults about this, and refrain from virtue-signaling their politics.

4. Subjects that are divisive and ALSO germane, such as Frank Gehry, should be considered totes cool. Because I hate Frank Gehry, and I have no idea who he votes for.

Its all very hilarious.

The orange flowers appear to constitute a very fine display of the orchid Epidendrum radicans.

3718 Whiteside Street was only built in 1926. Here's an overhead view from 1928 showing how much space it had when e_r's picture was taken. The road at the end of the backyard was already there, but considerably narrower. I've put a "1" next to the house and a "2" next to what I think is the gas station. The gas station location is now under the freeway.

That road is actually Pacific Electric's San Bernardino line. The tracks are still there and owned by Metrolink. They only had to do a bit of realignment to the tracks when they built the freeway around it. It's a tight fit but it makes for some interesting viewing opportunities for railfans:

I didn't hold out much hope in finding the location of the Richarz family home. Good team work everyone! ! !

Scott Charles, you did an excellent job removing the 'watermark' on the Broadway Tunnel / Hall of Justice photograph.
Years ago a fellow noirisher was removing 'watermarks' for us, but was told to stop. I don't recall who dropped the hammer. It might have been a ebay seller. (?)

I sincerely apologize, JSott. I try to respond fairly.
If anything_ I'm afraid people get sick of me thanking everyone. It's what you might call a 'no win' situation.

mystery location.

At first I thought this slide might be of Kiddie Land on the southeast corner of Beverly & La Cienega Blvds.

But in this 2nd slide one of our favorite subjects on NLA shows up in the upper left hand corner. ...A Gas-o-Meter!

If I'm not mistaken, the closest gas-o-meter to Kiddie Land was up in Hollywood near one of the older studios.

Then this 3rd slide popped up and LO and BEHOLD...A straight-on view of the Gas-o-Meter.

Wowza!............................................................................................................................................................................................................................................:previous: The LARy trolley car is extremely cool as well.

So if this small amusement park isn't Kiddie Land, what is it?

Remember folks; the slides are dated 1947.

Well, the trolley car has Inglewood on its sign, but it may not have anything to do with the location of this kiddie park.

It also looks like there is a large building in the background?

The place does not look as "fancy" as Kiddie Land Park, but maybe it is just an early version.

ethereal_reality May 14, 2019 12:35 AM

I was so preoccupied with the gas-o-meter I didn't notice the INGLEWOOD sign on the trolley.

Thanks for pointing it out, FredH. I think that could be an important clue.

I did notice the whitish building in the distance (the one you enlarged). The first thing that crossed my mind was Park La Brea Apts.

ethereal_reality May 14, 2019 12:54 AM

Speaking of INGLEWOOD. . . . .

The first thing to come to mind was the Japanese Deer Park, but it was located in Buena Park. (& I don't believe it was in existence back in 1915)

I didn't think the seller would mind in this case, since my post came after he had already sold the picture... but if it's considered bad form to remove watermarks, I'll stop doing it.

Thanks for the heads-up (and the compliment), ER. :)

My guess is that it's Edward Vincent Jr. Park(formerly Centinela Park) north of the cemetery. It's the right shape with a main street(Florence) on the left and houses on the right and Centinela Spring is in the park that would provide the water.

Is L.A. "noirish" because many noir films are set there, or are noir films set in L.A. because it is noirish? Interesting chicken/egg question. I don't have the answer. I guess any place that attracts so many people seeking a better life or fame in the movies is destined to be tinged with some gloom since most people don't realize their dreams. Peg Entwhistle learned that. And even some of those who attain their dreams find them hollow. And a place where temperatures can rise to 90 degrees in January is likely to discombobulate a fair number of newcomers not used to our regional oddities, climatic and otherwise.
