I'd just like to say a few off-topic things:
1. I thoroughly support the prohibition against political posts. It's unpleasant and unproductive to interject comments that are not germane to the topic at hand and that only serve to divide us. 2. By "political," I mean expressions of political views that I agree with just as much as those that I do not. 3. I would hope that EVERYONE should be adults about this, and refrain from virtue-signaling their politics. 4. Subjects that are divisive and ALSO germane, such as Frank Gehry, should be considered totes cool. Because I hate Frank Gehry, and I have no idea who he votes for. |

3718 Whiteside Street was only built in 1926. Here's an overhead view from 1928 showing how much space it had when e_r's picture was taken. The road at the end of the backyard was already there, but considerably narrower. I've put a "1" next to the house and a "2" next to what I think is the gas station. The gas station location is now under the freeway. https://i809.photobucket.com/albums/...itesideSt1.jpg mil.library.ucsb.edu |

I didn't hold out much hope in finding the location of the Richarz family home. Good team work everyone! ! !
Scott Charles, you did an excellent job removing the 'watermark' on the Broadway Tunnel / Hall of Justice photograph. Years ago a fellow noirisher was removing 'watermarks' for us, but was told to stop. I don't recall who dropped the hammer. It might have been a ebay seller. (?) Quote:

mystery location.
At first I thought this slide might be of Kiddie Land on the southeast corner of Beverly & La Cienega Blvds. "3 Kodachrome Slide 1947 Los Angeles KIDDIE RIDES Amusement Park LATL TROLLEY BUS." https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...924/NVnFCI.jpg Ebay But in this 2nd slide one of our favorite subjects on NLA shows up in the upper left hand corner. ...A Gas-o-Meter! https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...923/OAaTpA.jpg Ebay If I'm not mistaken, the closest gas-o-meter to Kiddie Land was up in Hollywood near one of the older studios. Then this 3rd slide popped up and LO and BEHOLD...A straight-on view of the Gas-o-Meter. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...923/gLr4Dm.jpg Ebay Wowza!............................................................................................................................................................................................................................................:previous: The LARy trolley car is extremely cool as well. So if this small amusement park isn't Kiddie Land, what is it? Remember folks; the slides are dated 1947. . |

Well, the trolley car has Inglewood on its sign, but it may not have anything to do with the location of this kiddie park. https://i.postimg.cc/sD5KnfWZ/Capture1.png It also looks like there is a large building in the background? https://i.postimg.cc/sgcmrnwj/Capture2.png The place does not look as "fancy" as Kiddie Land Park, but maybe it is just an early version. |
I was so preoccupied with the gas-o-meter I didn't notice the INGLEWOOD sign on the trolley.
Thanks for pointing it out, FredH. I think that could be an important clue. I did notice the whitish building in the distance (the one you enlarged). The first thing that crossed my mind was Park La Brea Apts. |
Speaking of INGLEWOOD. . . . .
This appears to be a rather impressive place! https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...924/SbIIW2.jpg Ebay /no longer listed Postmark 1915 reverse https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...924/QuFOAX.jpg Rotated for easier reading. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...921/5N26ew.jpg :previous: "It is that little Japanese Park down in front of the high school." I don't recall a Japanese Park this elaborate in Inglewood. The first thing to come to mind was the Japanese Deer Park, but it was located in Buena Park. (& I don't believe it was in existence back in 1915) . |

Hand written postmark--cool!
Is L.A. "noirish" because many noir films are set there, or are noir films set in L.A. because it is noirish? Interesting chicken/egg question. I don't have the answer. I guess any place that attracts so many people seeking a better life or fame in the movies is destined to be tinged with some gloom since most people don't realize their dreams. Peg Entwhistle learned that. And even some of those who attain their dreams find them hollow. And a place where temperatures can rise to 90 degrees in January is likely to discombobulate a fair number of newcomers not used to our regional oddities, climatic and otherwise.
