Is this another '80s TV reboot?

Sorry, odinthor, I know it's the wrong island, but the mustache, the shirt, the glasses - all you're missing is the Ferrari ;).

:previous: odinthor looks tall in that photo.

If I were a betting man I'd say he's around 6' 3.5"

am I close?

odinthor Jan 17, 2019 12:34 AM

A few minutes ago I happened upon this photograph on Ebay.

I was surprised by how clearly you can see the 3rd Street Tunnel. (it is the 3rd Street Tunnel, right?)

the cross street is Pico Blvd.

__

According to the April 2018 Google Street View, the Portsmouth Hotel doesn't seem to have changed much since you
showed it to us in June 2013, e_r.

This GSV is from June 2017, looking east on Pico from just west of Hill. The Portsmouth Hotel is on the southeast corner
of Pico and Hill:

This is appoximately the same view in December 1937, when the Portsmouth Hotel was the Hotel Latour:

Here is a slightly closer look at the hotel:

The buildng permit for the hotel is dated August 9, 1913, and it opened on February 3, 1914, as the Hotel Corola:

I wonder if Pamela Greyson is still stealing other people's copyrighted photos and sharing them without permission.

In fact, I'm trying to find an example as we speak. (so far nothing)

The W. C. Fields film It's A Gift features a pulley-driven clothesline across an alley as part of the plot. Fields has been driven outside near dawn to get some sleep by his termagant wife, and he keeps getting awakened by annoying sounds. One of these sounds is the squeaking of a pulley as a woman from across the alley is putting fresh laundry out on the line. It is the most annoying squeak ever devised by man.

What could go wrong? Gotta love the Jazz Age.

I was born about a generation and a half too late.

The Ford Model A years are baffling, because they had so many different body styles in that classification. I'm still trying to figure out the precise description of the Model A Kookie drove around on 77 Sunset Strip in seasons 2 and 3.

In 1908, in Pitesti, Romania , Harlamb Gerogescu was born. He was one of the most important architects in the interwar Romania after his plans were built cinemas, factories, apartment and office buildings and shopping centers, all in the art deco or modernist style. After 3 years as a professor at the Nebraska University he moves to L.A. and starts an architecture firm in partnership with James Larson.

In 1959 he starts his own architecture company. Some of his projects in and around LA:

-Apartment building on Dorothy Avenue in West Los Angeles, California.
-Pasinetti Residence, 1421 Summitridge Drive, Beverly Hills, California.
-Georgesco Residence, 420 S. Westgate Avenue, Brentwood, California.
-Residence on Crescent Avenue, Beverly Hills, California.
-Residence on Kearsarge Street, Brentwood, California.
-California Home for the Aged in Reseda, California

Here's part of a 1953 LIFE Magazine photo posted by gsjansen in post #3670. From the image above, I've marked the light-colored Stanley Apartments and the brick Winton Apartments immediately below. I've also marked what could be the palm tree from the far left of the image above. The palm tree would be near 3rd, so I'll stick with my original location guess. Despite the tanker looking familiar, I haven't found the color photo anywhere else.

A quick trip down to Long Beach for Feb. 11, 1982 The Spruce Goose arrives at Long Beach. The huge Hughes plane [1947]was about to squeeze into the Dome .

I'm sure most of you know that's the old Queen Mary [1936] at the right. Notice that her aft decks are crowded with onlookers. She's still there but the Goose is long gone.

Yeah that's one of mine. Looks like she pulled the pic from the eBay listing where it was reversed. I do believe we discussed it at the time but I'm not finding it now. I seem to remember someone wondered what was printed on the side of the shed, which is

https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7809/...86969ffa_o.png
...Anthony C. Meehleis Reinforcing Steel

It's a pretty neat shot. I think Hoss is spot-on with his estimation of the location.

I wish I knew more about color correction to get it looking really top-notch. Here's the Berke at Second and SBHA, across from the (back of the) JP Miller house at 201.

Coincidentally I was looking at this film last night- Circus performers arriving by airplane (possible at the recently discussed mid-town airfield?).
