FWIW, the renderings on the Crescent Heights and the NEMA Chicago websites both still show the open box.

Yeah I just noticed that. I think it's this model that actually had me thinking there would be no empty box top.

it looks extraneous and unnecessary to my eye.

the spiral staircase effect of the setbacks ascending to the sky is more than enough of a "crown" for this design, IMO. it doesn't need a see-through hat.

if they do spring for the empty box on top, i don't think it'll ruin the design or anything, i just won't shed a tear for its absence if it in fact does end up getting VE'ed out.

^I agree after looking at the renderings. Doesn’t seem to enhance the design and also undermines the vertical thrust. It should actually be a solid cube, or a rubik’s cube with smaller cube cells. that would have some cool lighting potential.

What are the odds that every setback back as a few 2.5 story tall trees? For some reason the thought of giant trees made me chuckle.

Thankfully, that's not going to happen. Too much wind and cold for trees that high.

A light up Rubik's cube would actually be quite interesting...

Great picture Elliphant. The South Loop would make quite the skyline in most other cities in America. The 78 and Riverline will add some awesome density to help link the Loop to the S.L.

Im surprised the open box isn't liked by the forum. Not that it's a big deal people have a different opinion than me but in my opinion closing it off looks very out of place and unbalanced. On a positive note the building in its entirety is a gem.

Why thankfully? I think it would be amazing to hav some legit greenery that high, urbs in horto.

Just a preference, i don't like trees on buildings, unless it's just on an amenities deck, but when they're incorporated into the design of an entire building i think it looks bad. I do, however, like mosses and lichens on green roofs.

100% agree. A hanging gardens look can be absolutely awe inspiring, but trees rarely look like they fit well into the design from what I've seen on the more "cutting edge" designs around the world that implement greenery.

That looks like someone built a metropolis on a Caribbean Island. The water of Lake Michigan is gorgeous. I believe I heard (possibly on this forum) it is due to an invasive species of algae?

Close, the lake is so clean now because the Zebra Mussels invaded and have eaten all the algae and other silt in the water.

Just wait and see how much bluer the water will turn once the Asian carp find their way here! They also feed on the algae and plankton that the zebra mussels subsist on.

Evolution in our time - pretty cool.
