This picture was taken from the roof of California Hospital looking more or less northwest.... Howard Buick was on Figueroa about where the Convention Center is now.
The jog is at the intersection of Venice & Hope. The car dealer--once Dodge, by 1947 apparently Oldsmobile--is now Honda of Downtown Los Angeles at Venice and
Figueroa; across Venice from it is a low-slung Toyota dealer where the pedimented building now stands. The old building does look like it could have been a market at
one time; the car dealer at 1600 S Figueroa (seen in the picture below, selling Flints) is now part of the Toyota dealer; it looks like the dealership was extended back
across S Lebanon St to replace the old building.... Check out the aerial view below...

Looking north on Figueroa across Venice... the Flint dealer building at right still stands under the Toyota
"improvements." It should be uncovered...

Can anyone tell me where this photograph was taken? (I just noticed the slight 'jog' in the street)

Thanks for posting those photos from T-Men. I had meant to do that a long time ago. Your screencaps turned out much better than mine would have.

BTW. Just as O'Keefe leaves the shop you can just for a brief instant see in a mirror or window a reflection of the signs on the Chinese shop across the street just south of Ferguson Alley bordering the Calle de los Negros.

fhammon: Thanks for the information. I kept looking at those buildings across from the Plaza on Google Street View, but could not figure out which one it was. I was looking for a door set on an angle, but could not find one. Your old photo solves the mystery.

And I had that screen grab of the reflection outside the shop, but I didn't include it.

Here it is:

Can anyone identify the reflection?

Is that Bullock's Wilshire on the far right in the photo?

The Toyota dealer appears to be an old building with a new false front. I placed some dotted lines where the original roof is still in place. Mr. Ethereal Reality is going to check this out. Most appreciated..![ I see Ethereal added a new photo...cool.]

The orange arrow is the direction the viewer sees the old building with the new facade. It seems to be the old Flint Motor Cars building from the 1920s.

I wonder if this building on South Figueroa was by the same architect as the Flint/Toyota building? It certainly looks like it.

It resembles the market in my recent post (see below)...so perhaps it's a market as well (just a guess).

Looks like this was originally the Goldberg-Bosley Hall...

Sixteenth is now Venice Blvd; there are Times references to it up to the mid-'30s...

The Honda building at 1540 S. Figueroa is Kaiser Brothers Oldsmobile-Honda (although that's not spelt out on their signage). They seem to have been in that building a very long time, at least since 1947.

Honestly GW, you're amazing.

Fantastic find GW!! Thanks so much.

It would be interesting to learn more about that bomb in 1922.

Easy to summarily deride, sitting as we do in the contented safety of 2012.

But the next time any of us lives through a world war (and I daresay NO ONE here fits that description), we'd all have a better leg to stand on.

They only call it a war if you fight back dear malumot. Even the smallest objection can get one beaten senseless by uniformed thugs and left to pass the rest of one's days in a wheelchair.
I wish I did have a better leg to stand on.

But this isn't the forum for that discussion. We've strayed far off topic. Let's leave it.

Yes, please drop it, tovangar. No one is interested in your politics, or malumot's, or mine, or those of anyone else here. Personal politics are incredibly boring, and one of the best things about this thread is that it is has been free of them.

The Baldwin brothers were very good at promoting their business--there are dozens of articles in the Times about them. None about the building at 12th & Fig, however--it does appear to be by the same architect as the Flint/Toyota bldg. (There was a lot of shifting of franchises and locations on auto row over the years--maybe one car man built both of them.) It seems that Baldwin handled various makes before 1921, when it took on Chevrolet--your pic must be from between then and the construction of its new quarters down the street (now also gone)...

http://img703.imageshack.us/img703/5...ldwincompl.jpgLos Angeles Times, March 2, 1924

Looks like Baldwin Chevrolet lasted another 40 years, if at yet another address, also now under the convention center...
