Looks like the original sign is still up on the roof too. http://img685.imageshack.us/img685/6249/capturevmj.jpg Google Street View |
You're right FredH. Old rooftop signs are my weakness. I love them! It seems most owners can't be bothered to remove them.

Amen to that....always a bonus to see a rooftop sign - even if the lettering is long-since gone and all we see are the bones.
I'm sure there's a cost-factor involved as well, E.R., and not just sloth. Usually the owners of these older buildings are small business types, often immigrants. These guys throw around nickels like they are manhole covers.......and I don't blame them one bit. You say there's an old sign on the roof? It's not causing any problem, and no one from the City is telling me to get rid of it? Fuggitaboutit. Quote:

Artist's sketch of the $3,000,000 Milliron's department store in Westchester on Sepulveda Blvd. near Manchester. The new structure has many ultra-modern features, including a rooftop parking area reached by huge concrete motor ramps. The store formally opened on March 17, 1949.

I remember parking on that rooftop in 1969! Had to buy socks for my Sr. Prom when it was Broadway! Battery died and had to have my dad push my car around on the roof until it started. (alternative to jumping)! ha.

I'm going to be off work for the next two weeks and hope to visit DTLA for a few walking tours and photo shoots. Anyone else in the area available or want to come along to share in the knowledge of the streets, buildings, and history of the area? Would love some company and new perspectives we can share.

I thought we must have seen this building before... that it must have been a Ralphs or an A&P. It was in fact a market, but not one I was really familiar with. It was one of the Carty Brothers' eight in the city. There was a Van de Kamp's at this location, which I thought might help in locating a picture of the market, but no such luck. Maybe someone else can unearth a shot. http://img138.imageshack.us/img138/7523/cartylogo.jpgbellavistaranch.net And a touch of noir... http://img708.imageshack.us/img708/5...ykidncompl.jpgLAT |
