It's funny how easily One Bennett Park gets lost in those renderings.

My view from the west-southwest is getting really crowded in that part of the skyline. Given where OBP is relative to Trump Tower, this may be directly behind it and I won’t even see it.
I’ll have a better feel when Vista pops up. |
Will they use existing foundation for the new building?.

I hope it gets built somewhere if not Chicago. |
A reminder - from 2007
Not sure who did this diagram - note that the thick line around the entire site represents a 70'+ deep wall - part secant and part slurry. https://farm1.staticflickr.com/893/2...07f65c89_b.jpg This one is mine https://farm1.staticflickr.com/871/2...e50d6dc1_b.jpg |
There were people out scoping the property yesterday. One of them looked like/was possibly Curt Bailey of Related.

It is actually kind of beautiful in a messed up way how the rest of the downtown area has thrived lately, but this site has remained a graveyard. Amazing juxtaposition that will be gone soon enough (fingers crossed)

Where did you hear this?

SOM new york?

What are some of SOM New York's projects? Do they differ from traditional SOM? Are they a separate entity from SOM HQ here in Chicago?

So, help out the uninformed and uninitiated.....
Why is SOM New York a bummer? |

If SOM uses a SHoP-inspired Terra Cotta and Bronze combo, I will be unbummed.

Uh, short-term memory loss or lack of knowledge seemingly pervade some of these threads: SOM New York does some really great work, especially on the high-rise side. No idea why folks think their design abilities are lacking, considering they are on the same level as SHoP, Zaha, etc., and frankly, laid the groundwork for smaller, high-concept design firms such as the aforementioned..
https://www.som.com/expertise/services/tall_buildings |
^ My question essentially was "Does the SOM NYC office produce different designs than their Chicago HQ". Their website claims the JHC and Sears Tower designs, so it appears that they're one entity.
|
Maybe someone here can refresh my memory. I seem to recall reading in this thread, perhaps it was a poster with insider info or an article about Related Midwest projects, that RM was having a private design competition for this project with 3 firms and also they had at some point asked David Childs to consult or advise on this project. It would seem they were doing more than seeking his advise but giving him a commission.
Anyhow I think some of the dislike for SOM NY is from how 1WTC and 7WTC turned out. They weren't disasters but disappointments to many people's expectations. A lot of the projects shown on the SOM website are not only from the NY office but include Chicago and San Fran. |

If you guys want to discuss the merits of one world trade center, there's a thread somewhere on this forum to do so. |
