The white building on the right is Sears. Here's one of my earlier posts on the area from 2014. The full post with streetcar loop photos is here.

The area between Venice and Pico has now been redeveloped. Sears and the streetcar loop have made way for a Lowe's hardware store and a parking structure. There is still a small bus terminal next door. Google's 45 degree views all show the Lowe's building under construction (as do the ones on Bing). Some of the Streetview images and the overhead view (below) do show the new buildings.

Oil wells as adornment on the streets of Los Angeles, California

An unusual phenomenon are oil towers, which the people of Los Angeles have set up as ornaments in fields and gardens.

Picture shows: A street in which houses are surrounded by oil towers, and these form a strange sight.

A huge hillside mansion in Brentwood in 1903? Seems unlikely & hard to believe, BUT the Sawtelle Veterans Home dated from the 1880's & would not have been too far away from what is now "Brentwood Park." Eagerly awaiting enlightenment.

Fascinating. Very impressive that you found such an obscure item, Odinthor. Thank you. Still, the woman in the photo looks more 1903 than 1913 to me - but I'm not an expert on fashions of that period. I looked up "Regent Square" on a real estate website & it refers to the area bounded by Montana, San Vicente, 17th and 21st Streets in Santa Monica - I don't think there are any prominent hillsides there (I lived in the area - 17th & Margarita - in the 70's.). Still, there is that reference to Tudor architecture and also a King Gillette property in "Brentwood." Hmmm...

Euclid Avenue and Grand Boulevard in Brentwood Park (circled in yellow below) is now I believe Hanover Street and S. Bristol Avenue.

The above property is curious.

The home that's on the corner that could be similar from Google satellite view was purportedly built in 1958 and renovated in 1990.

It's possible the original home from the turn of the century was simply replaced after 50 years.

Looking at the views on Historic Aerials, the original house on that plot was at the back corner of the plot while the current house is much closer to the road. The change occurs between the 1952 and 1964 images, which ties in with the 1958 build date of the current house.

Up until maybe 10 years ago, the old sears building was still there. The green modern fixtures you mentioned were all in working order (except near the Garden center/bus loop). I tried to buy a few of the fixtures when the building went through an upgrade, but they weren't for sale. The parking lot you mentioned was paved eventually, and it was usually for staff parking and i want to say you entered off of West Blvd. The last business that i remember operating out of the old building was "Builders Discount" and that was around 2002.

Thanks for another great find, e_r . . . . I think the ebay photo is an early shot of the Bellevue Terrace Hotel at 6th and
Pearl/Figueroa, before the other two buildings were constructed. Compare the ebay photo to the building below on the left
(minus the hat, dormers, and long 1st floor porch); the buildings' shapes match, as do the number and position of second-
floor windows, the horizontal and vertical lines below those windows, the front porch, the chimney top, and the roof edge:

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...USC_-_Copy.jpg

Bellevue Terrace Hotel -- CHS-31129 @ USC Digital Library

The 1888 Sanborn Map shows 6th Street ended at Pearl (see lower right corner). After a slight jog across Pearl, Bellevue Place began:

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...ue_Terrace.jpg

ProQuest via LA Public Library

The building in the ebay photo was apparently planned in 1882, completed in 1883, and turned into a boarding house by 1884:

July 26, 1882, Los Angeles Times @ Newspapers.com

1883-84 Los Angeles City and County Directory @ fold3.com

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...DJ_Whipple.jpg

November 13, 1884, Los Angeles Times @ ProQuest via LA Public Library

This article says that after Mr. Blake leased his home at 6th and Pearl (the home in the ebay photo and on the left in the
above USC photo) to Mrs. Whipple (see ad above), he built the second, or middle, of the three buildings that would
comprise the Bellevue Terrace Hotel:

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...ilt_-_Copy.jpg

And then Mr. Blake started the third and largest building (on the right in the above USC photo):

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...rl_and_6th.jpg

March 23, 1886, Los Angeles Herald @ Newspapers.com

Unfortunately, Mr. Blake -- Barnum Blake -- met a sad end:

If the Tudor mansion was indeed at 249 S. Bristol (NW corner of Bristol and Hanover) it was owned by John Schumacher, the founder of Southwestern University (the law school that's now located inside of Bullocks Wilshire). He died in 1944 and the furnished home was on the market for at least 4 years and marked down before selling to a developer who built the current home there in 1957.

Does anyone remember a Betsy Ross Bread brand?

Here's a snapshot currently on eBay of a delivery driver posing in front a small cash grocery.

"Hal Haskurs (?) L.A. Cal. '21."

It was a nationwide brand. It appears to have been kind of a franchise arrangement, where local bakeries would use the recipe and get the national advertising. I remember it as a pretty good sandwich bread, sold at our local Safeway in the SF Bay Area.

Cheers,

Earl

Hal Haskins is Harold O. Haskins:

Haskins, not Haskurs.

Thanks for the clarification, odinthor.

"21" is now 90021 which is the "Wholesale District"...

I took '21 to mean 1921.

"A boy stands on a lawn in front of Quayle properties on Griffin Avenue between Manitou and Baldwin streets, Los Angeles, 1930."

I haven't checked to see if the houses are still standing.

I realize boys used to wear beanies back in the day (think Jughead) but this boy's hat is a bit different. I wonder if he was in some kind of neighborhood club. . .or just stylish. :)

Really? The 'fascist' hat caught your attention? Not the petal sleeves or kimono leg overalls?

2247 Griffin Avenue has some resemblance to the house directly behind the little boy or the one next to it at what is now 2251 Griffin.

The houses behind the young boy are still there.

Another interesting outfit.

The "West" mentioned is H. H. (Henry Hebard) West... 1875 - 1958

Archive description.

View of the facade of a 2-story commercial building with a house and cafe on the left.

Text from negative sleeve: 1970. Los Angeles, California. Ace Reliance Electric Service Co. 1645 West Vernon Av. Taken August 11, 1940. The firm had sold out, and the sign board over the door was painted white ready for the sign of the new tenant. At this place Henry H. West, Jr. had his first job - a handy man, delivery boy, pick up truck driver, etc. 1. The left hand down stairs room of the 2-story building.

If I were to guess, I'd say H. H. West Jr. is the boy's father.

At that time the broad collection was not available online, pleased to see that the library has posted many additional images....it's a great collection.

If you look again at the photograph you'll see that Ivor was a young boy at the time.

My kingdom to anyone who identifies the house. :pimpdaddy:

Does anyone have a photo of the home as it originally stood?

Your whip was a strong motivator, Lwize, but I'm afraid the best I could do is the 1950 Sanborn Map, with the
NEC of Venice and Selby (formerly Malcolm) at bottom center:

ProQuest via LA Public Library

The two-story building at the NEC of Venice and Selby had its beginnings here, with the ground floor perhaps an
addition to the store next door (note how the interiors seem connected in the Sanborn map above):

Mr. Rathburn seems to have been a bit of a character:

Here is the August 23, 1940, building permit for the two-story stucco structure:

This is Rathburn's original store at 10733/35 Venice on June 18, 1934 (Overland is at the right edge of the image).
I wonder if the one-story, eastern half of today's 10737 Venice is what we see here -- or the front of it, anyway:

Here is 10733 Venice on the 1929 Sanborn Map:

I believe Mr. Rathburn had started his store by 1929:

Peru Street became Griffith Avenue by the summer of 1897. If you google-drive on 17th between San Pedro and Griffith today, you will find freeway on the north side and a few Victorian residential remnants in the 800 block.

Apparently another house moved by Malby in 1896 led to trouble. It seems that Yates lived at 612 S Los Angeles St.
