It's E Vernon Avenue in Vernon from near Hawthorn Avenue. Safeway was at 1925 E Vernon Avenue. Most of the buildings have gone, but the warehouse in the background with the large tanks on the roof is still there.

My psycho bio father was hunting for us, so we used alias names to avoid him finding us. There was a warrant for his arrest published at that time

My brother and our babysitter were involved in a car accident on Brand Blvd while crossing the street in Glendale when I was four years old. Our real names got into the newspapers and caused big problems for my mother. Next day we had to leave town in the middle of the night. After that, we used alias names.

My brother and I stayed with our relatives [left] while we boys were trying to lay low....that's my mom and stepfather [right].

I had my alias name ''confirmed'' by the US Navy when I enlisted during the Vietnam Draft era. My Passport still uses this alias name. The State Department said it was ok with them.:cool:

The buildings in the distance at left do look a lot more like Long Beach than they do like anything that'd be on the Los Alamitos base (I'm within walking distance of the base right now, as it happens). But what I'm looking at is the stylish middle-aged woman who's staring into the camera; my read on her is that she's Miss Panama's mamma keeping an eye on things . . . as well she should, because look where the guy's left hand must be . . . which I'd wager has more to do than one might think with what's up with his right hand. Meantime Miss Panama keeps smiling like a real trouper . . . as mamma thinks, "OK, take the photo already so we can get back to the hotel."

Miss Panama is indeed a darling, and reminded me of Anacani, from the Lawrence Welk Show..............his "little Mexican girl". <wince>.
She's adorable, and the one of the few performers on the show in the 70's and 80's who had any soul at all. Not a lot of decent pics of her online, sadly. (okay, full disclosure: my wife and I will, on occasion, properly fortified of course, watch LW on PBS. I'm not proud, but I'm not stopping.)

UPDATE: 510 West 31st was built in the fall of 1896 by Jerome B. Anjer--a retired Pittsburg(h) manufacturer (he died in LA at 89 or 90 in 1910).... He moved to 31st from a house at 425 East 29th St, which also still stands:

I'm not sure the "mother" looks old enough to be Miss Panama's parent...as for the officer...you might be right about the hand and that he seems to "feel" the need to hold his helmet "just so".... I wonder if the Sunbeam Alpine is his or hers?

Interesting that they were still doing that as late as Vietnam. My uncle, a big strapping Dane, was named Cleomarius Fightmaster by my grandmother. High school for him was a steady series of fistfights ("Hey, Cleo! Wanna fight?") and in 1913 he ran away from home and joined the Army. In those days the name you enlisted under became your legal name. His recruiting sergeant picked "George A Gilbert" and so he was for the rest of his life. He was an artilleryman, chased Pancho Villa under Pershing, was one battery over from Harry Truman in WWI, (plus drinking buddy in the 40 and 8) and ended his career back in New Mexico as Provost Marshal at Alamogordo when they were training the A-bomb crews.

The giveaway here is the roof sign for the Kelley Kar Co on the foreground building on the left. Kelley Kar Co Used Cars was at 1225 S Figueroa Street, so the photographer must've been somewhere near the current location of original Convention Center.

Re: the 31st and Fig pictures, and the carriage house.

In that neighborhood, back in the early to mid '60s, there were a few big houses - some cut up into apartments - that still had carriage houses opening onto alleys. We used to hang out, and hold band practice, in a carriage house near 32nd and Hoover. We scavenged couches, lamps and other furniture, and set up a stereo. Very fine times.
