Morgan usually gets all the credit for the building, but J. Martyn Haenke's and William Dodd's probable contributions should be considered.

For a good view of what's left today on the top half of that Sanborn map, check out season 6, episode 20 of NCIS, "Dead Reckoning". The press building (built in the late 1940s) was torn down in anticipation of residential towers that were never built, and the construction site scenes early in the episode were shot there. At the end of the ep, the final shootout scene was filmed in the alley/driveway between the Herald-Examiner building and the office building next door - marked Wiggins St. on the Sanborn map.

There's also a totally awesome scene where Ziva shoots two intruders coming in through two different doors at the same time. :D

A couple of weeks ago there was an interesting article on the somewhat obscure leading man Lyle Talbot
in the New Yorker Magazine (Oct. 1, 2012).

http://imageshack.us/a/img696/9203/a...cklyletalb.jpg

Pickwick Book Store is mentioned in the article as one of Mr. Talbot's favorite hangouts in Hollywood.
I was able to find a few photos on an old cd of mine.

Lyle Talbot had a lengthy film and tv career.http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0847939/ A few years ago, "BC" (before cable) LT was well known as a familiar face on the Ozzie and Harriet Show, aka "Joe Randolph."

Just when I think I've seen the worst of the facade cover-ups, I find this example at 811 S. Los Angeles Street.
It looks like giant tongue depressors were used.

Does anyone have a photo of this small classical building before this extremely weak attempt at modernization.

I've checked the photos at LAPL of the Olympic Trailer Court at 2121 Bundy Drive in Santa Monica and this isn't one of them.
This court appears to be in more rugged/hilly terrain.

ethereal, I can see in Google Maps a really long railroad tunnel that begins at the intersection of I-5 and CA-14.

Check out this Google Street View link:

http://goo.gl/maps/C0pjA

Amid the maze of freeway ramps and pillars you can spot the tiniest glimpse of what appears to be a tunnel entrance, at a lower level than all of the surrounding roadways and pillars. If you switch to map view and zoom back out, you can follow the path of the rail line tunnel over a mile northward. There is a 45-degree aerial of the other end, but no street view. Metrolink's Antelope Valley Line runs through this tunnel toward Lancaster.
