FINANCIAL DISTRICT — Straphangers traveling through Downtown Manhattan now have a new way to reach the 4 and 5 trains.

A new entrance to the Fulton Street station on the corner of Dey Street and Broadway opened Monday, allowing for greater accessibility to the southbound platform.

“It’s about time they think of this station,” said D. Carl Lustig, 58, who has been taking the 4 and 5 lines to work for more than 30 years.

“I think they did this very quickly. The stop gets a lot of traffic, and this will be a very well-traveled entrance.”

The new entry point is the most recent addition to the Fulton Street Transit Center project, a $1.4 billion endeavor that is slated to open in June of 2014.

“It has changed the dynamics of that corner significantly, and it is a major improvement for the many people that pass through Lower Manhattan,” said Catherine McVay Hughes, chairperson of Manhattan's Community Board 1.

“Now, for the first time, there’s a brand new elevator, which is something the community supported,” she added, noting that the feature will allow for passengers in wheelchairs, mothers with strollers and others to access the platform with greater ease.

Passengers can also use the new entrance to access the northbound platform for 4 and 5 trains, as well as the 2, 3, A, C, J and Z lines.

Simone Clarke, 40, of Flatbush, said she was drawn to the sleek look of the industrial glass exterior of the Dey Street and Broadway entrance.

“The last time I was here it was covered in scaffolding,” Clarke said. “It looks really nice now, and very clean. I hope they can make the rest of the station look like this.”

New MTA Metrocards that debuted yesterday (10/8/12) featuring ads in the front. These new cards are already causing confusion among riders.

MTA Considers Multiple Fare Hike Options

A monthly MetroCard could cost you an extra $21 under one fare hike proposal reportedly under consideration by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority.

The transit agency is looking at four options for next year's fare hike.

Under that first proposal, the price of a monthly MetroCard would rise to $125.

A weekly card would go up to $34 and the base fare would stay at $2.25, but the MTA would reduce the pay-per-ride bonus.

A second proposal would hike 30-day cards by $15 to $119, and a 7-day card would go up to $32.

The base fare would stay at $2.25 and the MTA would eliminate the pay-per-ride bonus.

Two other plans would raise the base fare to $2.50 while triggering other changes to the bonus and unlimited ride cards.

Each proposal is designed to generate an additional $232 million in revenue for the cash-strapped agency.

The agency will discuss the fare hike proposals during a public hearing set for next month.

Next generation of subway cars in the works for NYC

The chairman and president of the MTA traveled upstate to Plattsburgh Wednesday to visit the manufacturing site for Bombardier Transportation where 300 of the R-179 cars are being produced.

The new design is similar to the current R-160 cars on the tracks today, but commuters can expect brighter lights, improved heating and air conditioning, and digital voice announcements.

Officials say the trains are only scheduled for the lettered lines, including the B and D, and will arrive by 2015.

I'm sure the new cars will be nice, but the one thing I HATE is the way the walls angle in. When you're sitting in the seat (and you're over 5'-8") it makes you have to lean forward, and that's not comfortable, especially after a long day at work.

^ The only commemorative name for a highway/tunnel/bridge that I can recall everyone using instead of its previous name is the Jackie Robinson Parkway (formerly the Interboro Parkway). But that's only because the parkway is not very well known or used much.

So as of 7pm this evening, all train and bus service into the city has been suspended. My hope is that Metro-North will have things up and running by Wednesday, however I'm not holding my breath to that.

Metro-North will probably sustain damage at least on the levels of Irene; wasn't it down for a week or more after that? Also there was the one line that was almost entirely destroyed.

Yes, there was some considerable damage, particularly on the Hudson Line due to flooding and erosion - not sure how long service was suspended, though a week sounds about right . . . I wasn't a daily rider at the time to be impacted. The issue with the New Haven Line, the line I use, is the overhead electric lines that tend to fail easily during storms, let alone a storm of this magnitude. We shall see what happens . .

Oh I wish . . . worse comes to worse I can always drive mid week. I don't plan on making it in tomorrow and Tuesday, and it seems everyone else has that same mentality.

Aside from a few arteries, it seems that much is reopening into and out of the city. Still is a chaotic situation all around and commuting via rail seems to be out of the question for the foreseeable future.
