Those radio towers gave it impressive height for L.A. at the time. At least 300' to the top of the radio antennas I would guess, maybe a bit more. Does anybody have the official height? Probably 3rd in height at the time, only City Hall (454') and the Richfield tower (about 380' to the top of the spire) downtown rising higher in the late 1920s.

Not to diminish the significance of Charles Toberman's creation (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_E._Toberman), this was not the only storage facility in or near Hollywood. Wilshire Fireproof 116 S Western Ave; Lyons/Premier Fireproof at 6372 Santa Monica Blvd and of course, the equally colorful, American Storage, 3636 Beverly Blvd. https://la.curbed.com/2020/4/1/21199...ly-los-angeles , spring to mind. And yes, we have previously discussed many or all of these structures - and Mr. Toberman, on NLA.

According to the Oct 1, 1932 edition of the Hollywood Filmograph, page 14, Constance Bennett was seen entering the Hollywood Storage Bldg. "to witness a broadcast of Television, there's a heap of experimenting going on down there and they tell us it will soon arrive."

In the story it says the twin radio towers were 150' tall, so if you add that to the building height of at least 150', you get a minimum height of 300' to the top of the radio antennas. But more likely 350' or so, since the radio towers are set on top of concrete towers at least 30-50' above the height of the roof. So 330-350' to the top of the antennas give or take seems a good guess.

The website emporis.com gives the height of the Hollywood Storage Building as 58.22m, which is roughly 191 feet. That's 341' with the radio towers.

That's what-is-now the Joohyang Presbyterian Church at 3412 W 4th Street. The 1973 CD lists it as the Korean Royal Church. Sadly, the turrets are now gone. See here.

The building was built as the 2nd Sinai Temple at 4th St. and New Hampshire.

Here's the best image I was able to find with the turret crowns were intact.

Interesting tidbit.

The Temple was used as a location in the mostly forgotten 2nd version of The Jazz Singer (1952) starring Danny Thomas.

The synagogue (in the film) is supposed to be in Philadelphia but the 4th St. Temple in Los Angeles was used as a Stand In.

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/8...922/Cp8MdA.jpg

Al's (Danny's) cab arrives at the front of the Temple. (at night)

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...922/0ONit1.jpg

Once inside, you get a glimpse of a stained glass 'dome'. (I didn't think it had a dome)

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/8...924/Zs8Tyw.jpg

but if you look at the roof I believe it's built under the skylight.

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/6...924/CIwoJk.jpg

Possible?

The Alter with the choir above. (I didn't realize that was choir until later)

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/8...924/QsaGtR.jpg

And the Choir. (and the 'dome' again)

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/8...923/aRBzYz.jpg

A lot of this looks like matte paintings to me but I checked several sources and they say it is, in fact, the 2nd Sinai Temple on 4th St.

Oh! And there's also a large balcony. You can see it, and the others, in the clip below.

The new SoFi Stadium, opened in Sept. 2020, will, for the first time, hold the Super Bowl in two weeks and for only the second time one of the teams will be playing on their home field. (The 1st time was last year.)

SoFi Stadium sits on the site of the former racetrack that opened in 1938. For the first few months it was known as the Hollywood Turf Club.

http://blogs.dailybreeze.com/history...od_park_02.jpg

In the weeks after the park opened, the decision was made to simplify its name to Hollywood Park.

http://blogs.dailybreeze.com/history...2-1024x676.jpg

Hollywood Park from the Air, 1938. (Turf and Sport Digest)

It officially opened on June 10, 1938. It's first big stakes race was the $50,000 Inaugural Hollywood Gold Cup Handicap on July 16, 1938.

A :50 second video of the opening and Seabiscuit winning the Gold Cup race.

During WWII, Hollywood Park was shut down from March 14, 1942 until it reopened on November 1, 1944.

Hollywood Park was shut down again when on the night of May 5, 1949, a major fire burned down the grandstand.

http://blogs.dailybreeze.com/history...kFire_1000.jpg

No injuries to animals or people were sustained, but the grandstand was a total loss.

http://2.bp.blogspot.com/__OVFW6hFlG...P+fire1949.jpg

Fortunately, insurance covered the loss, and the park quickly was rebuilt, reopening on June 27, 1950 after holding its 1949 season at Santa Anita Park.

Hollywood Park kept its fans coming through a series of innovations, beginning with the first electronically controlled starting gate, which was installed in 1939. Betting innovations included he exacta, introduced in 1971, and the Pick 6, which was first put into operation at Hollywood Park in 1984. Another huge first in 1984 was the inaugural running of horse racing’s Breeder’s Cup, the sport’s richest event, which features an entire card of big-money stakes races.

In its earlier days, the racetrack hadn’t been used much as a concert venue, then Wham! headlined a memorable show there on Friday, Aug. 30, 1985, with Chaka Khan and Katrina and the Waves playing in support. An estimated 50,000 fans jammed the track to see the George Michael-led pop sensation, well before Michael’s successful solo career. Friday night concerts would later become a track staple.

After 75 years, Hollywood Park ran it's final race in December, 2013.

Now the location is SoFI Stadium, a sports and entertainment complex. It opened officially in September, 2020. Several events and concerts planned were cancelled or postponed due to the Covid epidemic. On May 2, 2021, the stadium hosted its first major event with spectators present, the filming of the Global Citizen-organized concert special Vax Live: The Concert to Reunite the World, hosted by Selena Gomez and featuring Jennifer Lopez, Eddie Vedder, the Foo Fighters, H.E.R., J. Balvin and the Duke of Sussex, which aimed to promote COVID-19 vaccination.

The Stadium will be used as a major venue for the Los Angeles Olympics and is currently being used by the NFL and MLS.

Will the Colliseum still be the venue for the opening & closing ceremonies, plus track & field in 2028? Anybody know? I hope so. Such history and location. I attended the 1984 opening ceremony (wonderful, especially the 84 piano Rhapsody in Blue) plus some of the track &field (including the one where Mary Decker tripped and fell). SoFi is so removed from the L.A. core in a flat nondescript area. It might as well be Peoria. The upper rim of the Collision is one of the better places to view the downtown skyline, which should be really impressive by 2028.

Here's a video showing where all of the events are to be held for the next Los Angeles Olympics.

The Coliseum is listed to have Athletics (I guess that means track & field?) and the Opening Ceremonies. (They wouldn't have passed up the chance to have the only stadium ever to have presented three Opening Ceremonies.)

SoFi Stadium is scheduled to present Football aka Soccer and the Closing Ceremonies. (Quick escape out of town to the airport, afterwards, maybe?)

There was a postcard (previously posted on NLA) with a 'paste up' airplane flying over City Hall but I don't believe we have seen a postcard with a 'paste up' Graf Zeppelin! (I could be wrong)

The rppc with the 'airplane' was vertical. .like the 2nd 'Zeppelin' postcard.

I wasn't able to find the postcard with the airplane. Otherwise I would have included a link.

Do you all remember the night-time photograph of the Graf Zeppelin over Leimert Park? I believe the consensus, at that time, was that it was super-imposed as well.

Happy to hear that the historic Coliseum will host it's 3rd opening ceremony. SOFI can have the closing. Quick airport escape like you say.

Its been a long time, but I believe my ticket price for the opening ceremony was $50. My seat was near the top of the seating bowl on the north side, about in the middle ("50 yard line" in football terms) so I walked a few feet to the rim and could see downtown. The tallest tower back then was First Interstate (now Aon).

For the night Decker ran (and tripped) I bought my ticket from a scalper for about $40. They were on the north side also, but halfway down. It was pretty easy to get tickets from scalpers for most events, but they were charging outrageous prices for the opening ceremony, so I already bought those early. I remember it was some sort of lottery system since demand outstripped supply. I was able to get a ticket for $50. When Zola Budd tripped up Decker, I felt bad when Budd was booed. I think Decker was a bad sport about it. I don't think Budd, who ran barefoot, meant to do that. A Romanian runner with long blonde hair won the 3000 meters. Can't remember her name, but I remember her long blonde mane.

Before, during and after the events there was a lot of buying and selling of pins and other things outside of the stadium. I also went to other events around the area. Often they were half full. For example a basketball game between Yugoslavia and China. Those kind of tickets were easy to get. The fears of bad traffic jams never materialized. Traffic was light. But the games made a huge amount of money. A great success, even though Russia boycotted (after the U.S. boycotted the 1980 Moscow games). The John Williams music was great and is still used.

I didn't go to the closing ceremony. The opening ceremony was more thrilling anyway in my opinion. Sorry you couldn't get tickets. The 84 piano Rhapsody in Blue was terrific. Of course the parade of the athletes, torch lighting etc. all great. I have a video of the Rhapsody in Blue on my little visited blog here about the 1920s/1930s. I'll repost it here later tonight.I remember watching the "flying saucer" in the closing ceremony on T.V. Forgot why they did that. "Close Encounters" or "ET" reference?
