R.I.P. Joan Didion. No one said it better.

I was recently driving down a street in the Mid Wilshire area and saw four cows,,,,it was most amazing. What was happening?

Probably 2 feet of snow or more in the San Gabriels above 7000 feet, although snow level should lower as cold front comes through. Should let some good photos from K. Hahn Park in a few days. Snow on Baldy with downtown. The usual postcard pic.

Yes indeed, R.I.P. Joan. Right up there with Tom Wolfe and Hunter Thompson as a "new journalist". And certainly some of the best CA stuff ever written. I met her once at a book signing. If only she could pen something about what really happens after we die. A best seller. We need a medium.

Greetings all,

Here's something I thought might interest the group, especially since it had its germ, its genesis, right here, as in here and here and here and https://skyscraperpage.com/forum/sho...ostcount=55041 here ...

Then, many months later, I wrote this, which goes into far too much detail...

My favorite discovery being that there were three arrows...

Of course nearly everyone one of you have seen Jules Wasser's iconic photograph of Joan Didion posing with her Stingray Corvette.

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...923/CQVUzS.jpg
1stdibs

"Shortly after Slouching Towards Bethlehem was published, in 1968, Time magazine commissioned portraits of Joan Didion by the photographer Julian Wasser. You know the series: a young Didion in a long-sleeved dress and sandals, standing in front of her Corvette Stingray, a cigarette dangling from her right hand."

I'm fairly certain this photo was taken at the property that Ms. Didion rented for five years on Franklin Ave. in Hollywood.

And the crumbling balustrade in this next photograph prompts me to ascertain (impressive) it was taken at the same rental property on Franklin.

In this next, seldom seen, photograph a glimpse of the next door property can be seen on the left (as well as a bit more of the Franklin property garage).

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/6...922/sNbc70.jpg

Does anyone know the street number of the Franklin Ave. rental property? So far, everywhere I look, it just mentions "the Franklin property" sans the street number.

There are hints in her novel, The White Album.

The Talmadge sisters?... The Canadian Consulate?

Now I'm intrigued by the surrounding homes as well.

7406 Franklin Ave., according to this article from Los Angeles Magazine.

riichkay Dec 24, 2021 9:58 PM

7406 Franklin Ave. was built in 1919 by Frederick C. & Lucy E. Miller.....

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds

As the house was under construction they lived at the St. Francis Court in Hollywood (1920 census)....

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...720&fit=bounds

In 1910 the Millers were living at 425 W. Ocean Ave. in Long Beach (apparently this was a hotel)....

The 1910 census reveals Mr. Miller made his fortune in the lumber trade....

Thanks for the link, craigs.

Here's the house from the google-mobile.

I see that the 7406 Franklin property extends quite a distant to the south.

It looks like the house was built over the property line....

That long skinny area is a parking lot for 7406 Franklin which today is the Shumei Hollywood Center.

As you can see the backyard is abundant with flower and vegetable gardens.

Lastly, here's a view looking south from the house.

Wilshire Blvd., photo is dated 1935 but I think it might be a little later than that.

Merry Christmas to all.

She looks terribly wasted and unhappy. I might read what type of life she led.

Can't judge a book by a cover? Maybe you can.

The following two negatives (positives here) of downtown Los Angeles in the 1970s were on eBay awhile back.

I've been trying to figure out where the photographer was standing when he took the photos.

It's almost as if the parking lot is the subject matter.

This pic. is odder still.... If you ask me it's not a very photogenic area. (the pho-tog was prob. trying to get all the skyscrapers in the photo.) ....but still

I'm interesting in , what looks like, an art deco garage on the left edge of the photo. ...Does anyone recognize it?

. .another mystery location...(Zody's parking lot)

Two color slides from the. .um. .1980s or maybe the 1970?

Same parking lot - a bit of a different angle.

Does anyone recognize this area?....I'm thinking perhaps Fairfax (?)

I think that the photographer was in pretty much the same place for both photos. The "art deco garage" is part of the old Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco (now the Reserve Lofts), so the photos were taken from a parking lot on Olive just north of Olympic. The first shot is looking roughly east toward the Eastern Columbia Building, while the second is looking roughly north toward the ever growing skyscrapers. Many/most of the buildings in the photos are still standing, but no longer visible from ground level at this location.

This was the Zody's at 5420 W Sunset Boulevard. Here's a selection of businesses on Sunset from the 1973 CD which are visible in the photos:

5419 Sun West Volkswagen Inc.
5420 Zody's Quality Discount Dept Store
5435 Palm Motel
5453 Bergel Of Hollywood Inc.

The Zody's building is now Food4Less - check out the current StreetView here.

I went down Wilshire today and noticed on that side street a huge truck was there to pick up the cows. There was also a small bus to take the milkmaids.
I wonder what that was all about. Oh well, Christmas is full of wonders.

Looking north towards Sunset Boulevard and Western. The old White Horse saloon is on the NE corner.

GaylordWilshire Dec 27, 2021 1:28 PM

Some sad-angry drunk posting here lately...sounds like someone's wasted again (and it's not Joan Didion).

Anyway, always love seeing the Eastern Columbia sidewalk. Had to check to make sure it's still there.
