The Midwest doesn't need high speed rail per se so much as it needs high quality grade separated entrances into the cities. The old Ohio high speed rail plan that failed on the 1982 ballot would have built extensive tunnels and viaducts in Cincinnati and Cleveland to enable HSR trains to travel at 80-100mph unobstructed from the system's respective terminal stations into the open countryside where they'd hit 150mph+.

It's the same problem that plagues HSR in California and the Brightline entrance into Los Angeles. The majority of the engineering difficulty and expense are the city approaches, not the high speed sections.

New Details Emerge for Vegas-to-Southern California High-Speed Train

^People are forgetting that the full timetable build-out for CASHR plans 240 trains per day and as many as 15 trains per hour, per direction traveling between Los Angeles and the wye near Merced. This means there would be literally zero time slots for Las Vegas trains during the peak hours.

Another issue is that maybe half of CAHSR trains will stop at Palmdale, meaning the scheduling of Las Vegas trains that interline would be complicated if the Las Vegas trains don't get their own dedicated platforms.

An alternate operation would be for the local CASHR trains to use Palmdale as their southern terminus during peak hours. This would force travelers to Los Angeles (or Las Vegas) to change trains, but would let the Las Vegas trains run south to Union Station during rush hours.

The other issue is that Las Vegas trains using the upgraded Metrolink tracks could terminate at Union Station but Las Vegas train using CAHSR Phase 1 tracks south from Palmdale into Union Station will have to continue southeasterly to terminate at Anaheim. Maybe them continuing to Anaheim is more a good thing than a bad thing?

I really don't think it would be a deal breaker to have a change of trains @ Palmdale. Tickets would be sold for Brightline West or whatever it will be called as a branded thing but the first short leg of the journey would be fulfilled by local CaHSR trains departing from LAUS. The assumption is the majority of passengers would leave from LAUS but how do we know just as many might depart from Burbank? Assuming a regular CaHSR local might average 60% capacity leaving LAUS, it seems completely within reason that there would be room for passengers destined to transfer at Palmdale. They could even have an electronic indicator sign of some sort designating several carriages for transfer passengers so to lesson the interuption with other seated passengers that would remain on the CaHSR local to points north of Palmdale. Adding to the relative reasonability of this arrangment would be a co-branded cross platform at Palmdale so there is no confusion amongst LV bound passengers that this is where they make a quick seamless transfer (under 5 min ideally if things run properly) to Brightline trains. This is how it would work for LA-LV tickets, LV-LA in reverse. There is also the possibility that a limited number high peak priority Brightline trains could depart and terminate at LAUS if a negotiated slot arrangment could be negotiated with CaHSR and Metrolink - something like Friday evening trains for instance. Anyways, just to reiterate I think this is a perfectly reasonable solution to a capacity issue with infrastructure that doesn't have an obvious solution short of billions in additional infrastructure cost for quad track tunnels and PRR stlyle 6 track row's from Burbank to LAUS.

jmecklenborg Nov 13, 2020 12:21 AM

^Well I don't think that a DTLA express with no stops could actually happen even on a Friday night since all CAHSR trains will have to stop at Burbank - even the expresses - to cue through the tunnel.

It's impossible in the current climate but if they built four tracks between Burbank and LA Union and then a third parallel tunnel between Burbank and Palmdale they would have tons of space in the schedule. The CAHSR express trains could skip the mandatory Burbank stop as well as Las Vegas express trains. Plus there could be enough service to Palmdale to turn it into a commuter suburb.

Also, having a third tunnel between Burbank and Palmdale would mean they'd still have two in service when one needs to be serviced. Two tunnels have like 5x the capacity of one.
