So the entire NYC transit enthusiast/strategist community is bummed NYCT didn't keep the F/M swap permanent after 63 St reopened. It should be obvious the E/F should run through the 53 St tunnel but until they start running better 6 Av local M service especially evenings/weekends they have a reason to keep the F on 63 St, but longer term the swap needs to be done.

The issue with 63 St are the elevators at 3rd Av. They are simply terrible considering how new they are. Their doors are slow to close and open, slow to go up and down, and often have service issues where they don't even stop at your floor. So once you arrive outside at 3rd Av & 63 St, you'd need to bank at least 3-4 minutes extra to get to the lowest floor (Queens and Uptown-bound trains) because of how slow the elevators are. I've missed weekend trains because of them and needed to wait another 10+ minutes for the next one. |

My kid's mom refuses to take him on the Subway, even though they live right by the N train. He's still young, so she's afraid that the loud subway noises, crazies, and homeless might scare him at this age. So we choose to only drive, walk, take the ferry, or take the bus. Another good ferry is the Ikea Ferry from/to Red Hook. We parked at Ikea and took the earliest ferry from Red Hook at 11:20am. We saw a puppet show at the revamped Battery Park, spent some time at the new playground there, and then went back to Pier 11 to take the ferry back to Red Hook. The catch here is that you only have, at most, a shade under 4 hrs to spend in the city before you need to go back (or a shade under 5 hrs if you take the ferry from Pier 79 at W 39 St). So it's good for a quick jaunt, and it's completely free. Speaking of ferries and boats, we had to duck into the Whitehall terminal building (SI Ferry) because of the sudden rain on Saturday. Some of the most annoying solicitors around are those Liberty Island ferry salesmen. They constantly ask you if you are going to the Statue of Liberty, and when you ignore them, they keep saying "excuse me, excuse me" as you walk away. Some of them are so aggressive, and they even go inside the Ferry Building to solicit business (which I'm sure is illegal). I suppose I could have been nicer and more direct by saying "no, we are not going to the statue" instead of ignoring them. |
^ i have a tour of the brooklyn army terminal coming up next month and i am going to take the ferry from wall to bay ridge so looking forward to that route. the best route i took was clason point in the bx to wall st it was a spectactular ride.
as for the si ferry yes there is and has always been an annoying statue hawker scrum in front of the whitehall ferry station. my only advice is to not look like a tourist and walk with purpose like you know where you are going. since we moved to staten and im there all the time i notice i rarely if ever get approached or bothered by them anymore, but i cant say what exactly im doing differently other than i guess exuding confidence — sorry lol. *** when you catch one be sure to let mta know if you prefer soft shell or hard shell open gangway — https://www.instagram.com/reel/C5lZp...Zsd3Z5bmJybWpp |
Hard shell taco is superior in virtually every way.

The only complaint I can think of is some claim you can pinch your finger in the sliding panels or something. It makes for a slightly narrow passage but I don't think that's an issue as most are not going to be standing right in the gangway and they probably for flow should be discouraging that anyway. The soft shell accordion already looks dirty and will age horribly with filth and vandalism, plus it looks ridiculous bouncing all over the place when the train crosses switches and the like. If the authority is even remotely considering soft shell after this test they are out of their minds. Of course they want IBX to be light rail so my confidence in them isn't the greatest.

$300M for replacing that bridge? How?
$30M ought to get you a titanium version. |

And yeah, I did have a slight look of confusion on my face, but certainly not because I was looking to go to the Statue. There was a brief squall that forced everyone indoors, and I was looking for the elevator and places to sit to eat our lunch. But seriously, fuck some of those hawkers. After I told one of them "we don't need your help, thank you", he started laying on some ethnic slurs at us. Great business model, asshole. I really should have taken his name and his company down to either report him to the company, or if he refused to give me his name, give a bad Google review of the company. Also, the same guy got into a fight with some other hawkers because apparently not even the other hawkers like him. |
^ oh geez i am sorry to hear that. the only thing worse than the pushy hawkers and the lunatics are the pushy lunatics.
the nypd does sweep through there occassionaly and run them out, but they always come back. ugh. and yes we do have makerpark nearby in stapleton. its great and they have fun events. wfmu gets all the non profit alternative radio buzz, but makerpark radio is also terrific (as is the lot radio in w’burg). https://makerparkradio.nyc/ |

Congestion pricing: DOT touts dozens of proposed street redesign projects to come following start of Manhattan toll program By Ben Brachfeld Posted on May 2, 2024 The city’s Department of Transportation (DOT) is touting dozens of new street redesign projects it intends to undertake with the looming June 30 start date for congestion pricing. … “Congestion pricing will reduce traffic, improve air quality in our communities, and raise critical funding for our subways and buses,” said DOT Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez. “We have been preparing for this moment for over a decade, and with fewer cars entering the tolled zone, we can repropose street space to make commuting by bus, bike, or on foot safer, faster, and more reliable.” https://www.amny.com/transit/congest...sign-projects/ https://www.amny.com/wp-content/uplo...-02-140037.png Pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists on 8th Avenue in Midtown. Looking forward to seeing how different things will be with the CP when I visit in October. Hopefully a good amout of the pedestrian improvements will have been completed by then!

in the meantime, i’m pretty curious to see the immediate effects of congestion pricing. tbh i’m not sure how much change will be visible, at least way downtown below canal where i usually am these days, because post-covid there really isn’t much car traffic anymore anyway. |
it is true staten island drivers are getting whacked the most by congestion pricing, but i wonder how many actually drive in to downtown manhattan anyway?
Congestion pricing just became an even bigger rip-off for these NYC motorists (opinion) Published: May. 05, 2024 By Tom Wrobleski | wrobleski@siadvance.com The $15 congestion pricing tax is going to be a bitter pill for a lot of New Yorkers. But some in the five boroughs are finding the program harder and harder to swallow, especially beleaguered drivers and commuters from Staten Island. more: https://www.silive.com/news/2024/05/...s-opinion.html |

MTA faces funding issues, capital project delays threaten future plans By Mac Sorensen Posted on May 9, 2024 New York state has provided financial support to the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) to stabilize its finances, but the transit authority is now facing challenges with its capital program due to funding issues, according to a report released by State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli. The MTA’s capital work, crucial for maintaining and upgrading the regional transit system, has been delayed, potentially affecting future plans and the quality of service for riders. more: https://www.amny.com/transit/mta-fac...-future-plans/ |

I might be somewhat alone on this but I really wish the LIRR would play up the banana yellow. If they ever decide to join the rest of the planet and lose the stainless steel that turns them into tanks 30% heavier than they need to be, they could have painted carbodies. Would be cool to see an entire yellow or black and yellow train streak by. Besides easily being the least aesthetically pleasing model in the Metropolitan series, I was very disappointed to not even see the bonnets on the new M9 painted solid yellow.
Didn't happen as intended: https://i.pinimg.com/736x/37/63/8f/3...54be06dbd6.jpg ... |
^ If not stainless steel, which metal would you recommend and why?
|
Virtually all international rolling stock is either lightweight carbon steel or aluminum/aluminum alloy or even beginning to dabble in carbon fiber/composites (especially in HSR trainsets). SS is heavy. SS carbodies might be lower maintenance but they contribute to less efficient operation due to power consumption and wear on track.
