Only CD listing for Paul T Frankl is (1960) 306 N Doheny Drive. CRestview 6-2073. The structures across from Ralphs (formerly Hughes Mkt at Beverly Blvd/Doheny Dr) appear to be decidedly residential, even if they housed businesses. They do not look anything like the Beverly Hills-labeled images below. Frankl also had a gallery/offices on Rodeo Drive, which do not appear listed, unless they went by another name. I would assume the images below are from that Rodeo location, but perhaps someone can confirm this. There is a '36 listing for Frankl Galleries at 3281 Wilshire, but it is not clear that this has any affiliation with the designer.

This is the site of the old Olive Street School (later the Health Department) between the Trenton on the left and the Fremont which has been torn down but would have been on that upper lot to the right. Here's a shot which shows your apartment building (the Brown Apartments) which would have been up on Grand Avenue across from the Grenada...

Great image of the construction site as the PE Hill Street Station is converted to a massive building and entrance to a subway tunnel which will cross Bunker Hill to Toluca Yard (1st/2nd/Beverly Boulevard/Glendale Boulevard). Here they have breached the Olive Street roadbed and spanned the vacated Olive Street School/Health Department property. The Trenton (on the left) and the Fremont (on the right) look on nervously. The Leonard Rose Mansion at 4th Street and Grand Avenue can be seen behind the Fremont. Nice image of actual steam shovels at work.

I apologize e_r, I fell for a mislabeled photo. That gate is at another cemetery with the same name up north. The Home of Peace community did spend 8 years carefully recreating all the graves and memorials from the Chavez Ravine site at the new location, which is much better than what happened to other early LA Cemeteries.

Home of Peace has a great roster of residents.

The "buckets" on the wall are tile tubes for the electrical wiring to pass into the building. The wood beam attached to the building has insulators that the wire connect to and then enter the building

Her father was an Australian rabbi....and her mother was Austrian. (she is buried near her parents)

While I don't know which building is in the background, the picture was taken from the south side of Olive facing north, The retaining wall on the right was the wall from the old Fremont Hotel, at Olive and 4th, a remnant of which still stands. The entrance to the parking area is also still there although there is no street access currently. The part where the buses are is now a parking lot, accessible from the upper edge, near the old retaining wall.

The site "On Bunker Hill" has a description of the picture with an explanation that the edge of the building at left is the Hotel Trenton. There is a map on the site as well which notes that the building in the background is an "Apartment" and gives the address as 414-416 S. Grand but does not give a name.

The whole area has been "eaten" by the phone company

I found this article in the January 26, 1899 edition of the Los Angeles Herald. It looks like "city detention hospital" was the new name for the "pesthouse", where they treated "various types of contagious disease — smallpox, diphtheria, scarlet fever, typhoid, etc.". Interestingly, the site near Chavez Ravine was still marked "Pest House" on the 1910 Baist map (the name had changed by 1914).

All I found out e_r is the building went up in 1930 and the current tenants do laudable work.

The City Directories list The Meyberg Company at 2845 W 7th Street between 1932 and 1939. They appear under the "Lighting Equipment-Manufacturers" heading.

By 1942, the listings change to the Marjorie Montgomery Co (W J Schminke Lola Croonkite), manufacturers of "Billie Marlo", "Marjorie Montgomery", "Call Cruise" dresses, sportswear and beachwear. The Aviation Training Institute also seems to be at the same address.

The 1956 and 1960 CDs list W J Schminke & Associates, dresses at 2845 W 7th Street.


It looks like The Meyberg Company was previously at 631-635 S Grand Avenue. This headed letter dates from 1914.
