https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8568/...8d170fb4_o.jpgLooking west from Hill Street as the subway tunnel and building goes in, 1925 Great image of the construction site as the PE Hill Street Station is converted to a massive building and entrance to a subway tunnel which will cross Bunker Hill to Toluca Yard (1st/2nd/Beverly Boulevard/Glendale Boulevard). Here they have breached the Olive Street roadbed and spanned the vacated Olive Street School/Health Department property. The Trenton (on the left) and the Fremont (on the right) look on nervously. The Leonard Rose Mansion at 4th Street and Grand Avenue can be seen behind the Fremont. Nice image of actual steam shovels at work. LAPL |
brickyards/peat fires/cemeteries
Thank you Flyingwedge (and MichaelRyerson) for the panoramas, showing brickyards among much else:
More info on the City Brick Company and Los Angeles Pressed Brick Company if anyone's interested. A few more Peat Fire Pix to follow up on fhammon's interesting post. I apologize e_r, I fell for a mislabeled photo. That gate is at another cemetery with the same name up north. The Home of Peace community did spend 8 years carefully recreating all the graves and memorials from the Chavez Ravine site at the new location, which is much better than what happened to other early LA Cemeteries. Home of Peace has a great roster of residents. Info from Backyard Tourist LA here and here |

Cemeteries
:previous: Thank you for the info Mstimc. I'd been looking for more on the three smaller cemeteries, Agurdath Achim (1919), Mount Zion (1916) & Beth Israel (1907), tucked into a corner of Home of Peace:
https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-P...64318%2BPM.jpg backyardtouristLA.com Mount Zion looked OK in this view: https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-w...85336%2BPM.jpg google maps photos Actually, from the street, it's a bit hard to tell which is which: https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-k...90407%2BPM.jpg gsv PS According to Mount Zion's wiki and facebook pages there has been "minimal" restoration |

[QUOTE=Tourmaline;6954297]Curious structure.
I would assume those buckets served to house flood lights. (Or could they have functioned as signal lights?) (Or they could contained water to douse unsuspecting passersby on April 1? :P) I also wonder about those small star adornments reminiscent of more modern seismic retrofitting. Spacing suggests that they are not purely cosmetic. Could they be part of the structure's metal framework?:shrug: http://hdl.huntington.org/utils/ajax...XT=&DMROTATE=0http://hdl.huntington.org/utils/ajax...XT=&DMROTATE=0 http://hdl.huntington.org/utils/ajax...XT=&DMROTATE=0http://hdl.huntington.org/utils/ajax...XT=&DMROTATE=0 http://hdl.huntington.org/utils/ajax...XT=&DMROTATE=0http://hdl.huntington.org/utils/ajax...XT=&DMROTATE=0http://hdl.huntington.org/cdm/single...d/13183/rec/17 The "buckets" on the wall are tile tubes for the electrical wiring to pass into the building. The wood beam attached to the building has insulators that the wire connect to and then enter the building |
:previous: Finally an explanation.....thank you latoetagger!
...very interesting avatar name. Do you work in the L.A. morgue? __ And welcome to the thread dodgerblue62. -glad you found us. :) I really like that map of Home of Peace Memorial Park tovanger2. I noticed that the grave of silent film star Carmel Myers is listed. The beautiful Ms. Myers http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/640...673/JFPIzB.jpg https://www.tumblr.com/search/carmel%20myers Her father was an Australian rabbi....and her mother was Austrian. (she is buried near her parents) |

The site "On Bunker Hill" has a description of the picture with an explanation that the edge of the building at left is the Hotel Trenton. There is a map on the site as well which notes that the building in the background is an "Apartment" and gives the address as 414-416 S. Grand but does not give a name. The whole area has been "eaten" by the phone company |
Very interesting 1888 panorama images, Flyingwedge. Thanks for posting them.

:previous: Very interesting HossC. What was the City Detention Hospital next to the Hebrew Cemetery? (for criminals?)
I just noticed the quarantine station just below the grounds of the Hebrew Cemetery. (was this in response to the Plague epidemic? Quote:
As a reminder of what the Olive Street School looked like, this photograph was taken near the end of construction. I've been trying to find out more information on this rather foreboding building at 2845 W. 7th Street, just west of Hoover.
http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/128...905/lEkPUQ.jpg GSV / 2007 Today it is the Central American Resource Center, but what was it originally? http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/800...673/J6jSH1.jpg google_earth *I used the 2007 street view because I thought it looked dramatic. ;) __ |

By 1942, the listings change to the Marjorie Montgomery Co (W J Schminke Lola Croonkite), manufacturers of "Billie Marlo", "Marjorie Montgomery", "Call Cruise" dresses, sportswear and beachwear. The Aviation Training Institute also seems to be at the same address. The 1956 and 1960 CDs list W J Schminke & Associates, dresses at 2845 W 7th Street. It looks like The Meyberg Company was previously at 631-635 S Grand Avenue. This headed letter dates from 1914. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...o.jpg~original eBay |

:previous:Thanks for digging up information on 2845 W. 7th Street HossC and t2.
Do you agree the architecture is somewhat odd? Certain parts of it are almost bunker-esque...well, except for the windows of course. That's why I wondered about it's history. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/640...905/742VdL.jpg __ below: 'mystery' location.
