Any idea what the workmen are doing at the bend in the track?

__

Looks like a track gang waiting for the 1373 to clear the station before resuming work nearby. Since they seem to be looking and pointing at a specific location they may be watching the trucks on the car as they pass over a section of track that recently received maintenance or may be in need of maintenance. In railroad parlance the observation of a passing train by railroaders on the ground is known as a rollby and is performed as a safety check on a passing train.

As to "Los Angeles Electrical Exposition 1936." Nice gams on the light bulb!

Cheers,
Jack

Thanks for the information on a 'rollby' Jack -very cool. I'm sure you're one of the few people who know this term.

:previous:

The lifeguard headquarters appears to have been located on Sunset Pier in Venice, a few blocks south of the main Venice Amusement Pier. It was opposite the end of what is now Venice Boulevard. The picture below, dated 1946, is the only one I've located so far, and comes from an article about the history of the Sunset Pier on www.westland.net. The article claims that the lifeguard headquarters remained there until November 1965, and that the pier, which had a distinctive 45 degree bend, was demolished shortly afterwards.

http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...SunsetPier.jpg
www.westland.net

I was just about to hit "Submit Reply" when I decided to check Historic Aerials. The 1952 and 1963 images are quite similar, but the 1963 image (below) is a little clearer. The westland.net article mentions that the beach was widened in 1947 and that the Sunset Pier became land-locked. It looks like most of the pier was demolished before 1952, and only the elevated lifeguard headquarters in the middle of the beach stayed on until the mid-60s.

I still haven't found a better picture of the lifeguard headquarters, but I did come across this 1940 aerial which shows the two Venice piers. The Sunset Pier is the one on the right. This was before the beach widening (just to prove it wasn't always land-locked), and shows the 45 degree bend in the Sunset Pier. I've arrowed the location of the lifeguard's building. USC also have a 1933 aerial of the same area, but the buildings on the pier look different. At one point there was a ballroom on the end of the Sunset Pier, and I think it was extended before it was demolished.

I went through all the censuses in that period (1900- 1920) and all the voter registrations, and while I came up with about 15 people who had names with that combination of letters "schur**g" and various addresses for those persons, I did not find any of the addresses which had a house that even remotely resembled the one in the picture. It is probably gone or remodeled beyond recognition. A couple of the addresses were lost to freeways. Sorry.

There's a zoomable version of the picture at USC which gives a little more detail. The sign on the left says "Adele California", while the one on the right says "Morris Nagel Versatogs". Both were apparently clothing companies. The Versatogs building has the number 2609. According to the CDs, Morris Nagel had a clothing store at 818 S Broadway in the '30s and '40s, but there's no mention of another building. I also found a 1949 advert for Versatogs on coutureallure.com's blog, but no address was given.

UPDATE: I've found the advert below in a 1946 issue of 'The Californian' on archive.org. It gives the address of Adele California as 2615 South Hill Street, so that would make Versatogs' address 2609 South Hill Street.

This photo is from a family album documenting a road trip by a father and son, where they visit points of interest along the LA Aqueduct. The album is available to view on the NET, but I can't recall where at the moment. One of the California library sites.

Edit: Relying on memory has gotten me into trouble before, so you'd think I 'd know better. The above comment is simply incorrect after doing a bit of searching to support (disclaim) it. The above photo is very similar to the one in the road trip album I mention, but in fact it is not the same. The following link is a sideshow of the album I speak of, though it is from 1915 where two FRIENDS take a road trip. It starts with a photo of the departure point in Hollywood, 1837 Canyon Drive. The site also shows a then and now photo of the house.

Raybestos is still a major brand in brake parts. There are Raybestos pads on both of my cars right now, in fact - purchased from O'Reilly Auto Parts although it looks like they don't carry that brand anymore. Perhaps that was a contract left over from the acquisition of Checker/Schuck's/Kragen.

Nice find! I've wondered about that Southeast corner of the Paramount lot, in part because of how much it has changed from the way it looked in Sunset Boulevard.

It certainly looks as though this was a public street right up to the gate at Bronson and Marathon. It's also interesting to note that television station KTLA was situated so closely, as it was then owned by Paramount. (Any guesses as to the name of the cafe seen behind Norma Desmond?)

The little cafe on the corner still existed in 1961, as can be seen in this aerial shot from The Errand Boy:

When did Paramount take over this block to add a parking lot? The magnificent Bronson gate still exists but it's quite difficult to see from Melrose Ave.

:previous: I'm glad you posted these vintage images Handsome Stranger.

When I was looking for the gas station, I too was surprised by how much Paramount had expanded south of the iconic arched gate.
I was also confused. -so Valentino Place is now private...didn't it used to be a public street?
(was it named Valentino Place back then, or did Paramount rename it?)*

I also noticed this apartment building on the other side of the Paramount 'shrub' fence/wall, as seen from Melrose.

As has already been pointed out, this part of N Bronson is no longer open to the public or the Googlemobile, but it appears to have been the 700 block. That means that the café must have been Oblath's at 723 N Bronson. It appears in the CDs from 1929 until 1973, with the earlier ones giving its owner's name as Izso Oblath.

Historic Aerials has images from 1948 and 1952 (just either side of 'Sunset Boulevard'), so I went for the earlier 1948 view because it's clearer. The café is just to the left of the "N" of the upper "N Bronson Avenue" label. Could that be e_r's United Service Station on the corner of Melrose and Van Ness? The Valentino Place apartments in e_r's later post also appear on the image below. It looks like Marathon Street used to go all the way across to Van Ness, with a little kink before it reached N Bronson. Both Historic Aerials and Bing Maps show Marathon Street continuing west of N Bronson, with N Valentino Place being the north-south street to the left of the apartments.

Is it a case of artistic license? -or were they really there?

* I stand corrected. I just looked at HossC's postcard again and I see flagpoles in the darkness!!

I just went back in the thread and yes there ARE flagpoles there....but none seem to have flags flying.

Here's a huge photo of the Richfiield Building showing the flagless flagpoles.

I like to try and decipher the marquees of theatres and th elike in many NLA photos.

It took awhile, but most of the above ABC marquee finally came to me.

The top line of the front of it says:
"The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet" (then the next two words I do not know.)

The second line reads:
Starring Ozzie - Harriet - David & Ricky Nelson

This photo may have been taken at ABC radio studio on Vine St.. The Nelsons began their show on the radio.

Feb. 20, 1949 – David and Ricky Nelson start playing themselves on the radio show. [The original Nelson radio show began in 1944, with actors for the 2 boys.].

It looks like Ricky is in the process of getting his teeth straightened. Its hard to believe they're all deceased.

It certainly looks as though this was a public street right up to the gate at Bronson and Marathon.

When did Paramount take over this block to add a parking lot? The magnificent Bronson gate still exists but it's quite difficult to see from Melrose Ave.

I don't know when the public street right up to the Bronson and Marathon gate stopped being public, but I know that when my sister visited me in 1981 that it was still accessible.

Something some might find interesting in the above photo.

In the blue colored square you can see parking spaces there. On the north end you see a wall. This is a cyclorama painted to look like the sky. Paramount occasionally floods this entire parking lot area and uses it to film things in where water and sky is needed. Offhand, I don't know anything that's filmed there except that I read once (if true) that the first Gilligan's Island reunion film used it for some scenes.

I was invited by a friend to a film screening on the lot once and this is where we parked. As you might expect, it is recessed. I do not recall that the bottom was painted blue at the time, though.

I imagine the two people examining the trees live in the houses in the background. Maybe oldstuff can use their last names (shown below) and figure out the addresses.

So what exit are they talking about? -isn't 1937 too early for highway construction?

Does anyone have an idea where this was located? (I see there's a Drama School at left) --and quite a bit of litter on the ground and along the curb.

Really evocative slide e_r!

There was a customer where I worked that I talked to frequently back in the 80's and 90's and one day I was watching this film "Macao" and noticed the costume designer's name was the same name as his, so I asked him if that was him. Sure enough, it was. The same year of 1952 he also did the costumes for the film Clash By Night, which starred Barbara Stanwyck and Marilyn Monroe. He proceeded to tell me about a party he held at his home that he invited Marilyn to attend. He said she was quite shy and didn't think she'd go...be uncomfortable not knowing anyone etc. (For various reasons I know of, I'm assuming that this party was mostly his gay friends and acquaintances.) She did show up at his door. She wouldn't come in until Michael came to the door and escorted her in. (She felt comfortable with him because she knew him.) He said she was smartly attired in a black and white outfit, complete with a hat featuring a large red feather sticking out of it. He said that the boys were agog.

LOL! I wish there were circumstances that I could have talked to him more at length! Much less working with her, but imagine giving a party and having Marilyn Monroe show up!

The flag poles on the Richfield Building are certainly quite anonymous, but here are a couple more images. This picture shows the poles complete with flags on a still day in 1957. The full picture was posted by FredH in post #18884.

An article on ladailymirror.com includes the undated picture below. It clearly shows two flags flying.

The first thing that caught my eye was the large barn-like building down the street.

I was surprised to see that it's still there in the current view, as are the two buildings on the corner that once housed a liquor store on the left and an Italian-American Market on the right. (shown below)

After a couple google searches...this is in fact, the old Los Angeles Railway Huron Substation built in 1906.
It is the second oldest surviving substation in the city. It housed equipment to convert high-voltage electricity supplied by the Edison Company to the 600 volts current
used by the L.A. Railways "Yellow Cars."

Here are some interior photographs.

So what exit are they talking about? -isn't 1937 too early for highway construction?

In the 1936 and 1938 CDs, Emma E Lagomarsino's address is 1438 12th Avenue, and Loa A Bullard's is 1629 S Curson Avenue. Loa was a fireman with the LAFD. 1438 12th Avenue was built in 1910, while 1629 S Curson Avenue was built in 1928. Both houses are still standing, but neither of them is close to Figueroa.

Rather than "Figueroa St. exit", I think it may say "Figueroa St. ext" as in "extension". From Wikipedia, "The Figueroa Street Viaduct, connecting the Riverside Drive intersection with North Figueroa Street (then Dayton Avenue) across the Los Angeles River, opened in mid-1937,", so could this be another 1937 extension to Figueroa? I'll have another Google ...
