[QUOTE=ethereal_reality;5958655]I've been intrigued by this block of E. 3rd Street for quite some time. Two buildings on the periphery of the Santa Fe Freight Depot
have the old Santa Fe logo incorporated into their architecture (both are located further west on E. 3rd St.).

The buildings along Santa Fe Avenue belonged to the AT&SF Railroad, including the original depot and the 8th Street rail yards. Today, the Santa Fe freight building is operated by a private concern. Amtrak operates a commissary and a store house between Santa Fe Avenue and the 8th Street yards. They also use round house at Washington Boulevard, rebuilt a few years ago. Metro Rail operates yards along the L.A. River, just east of Santa Fe Avenue. Union Station on Alameda was built to consolidate the three passenger terminals, Union Pacific, Southern Pacific and Santa Fe. Since the railroads were instrumental in helping build the city, they were granted rights of way in the central city that still exist today, although some have been broken up over the years.

Here is a little info, but no mention of why the Santa Fe logo is on the window:

You can kill some time looking through this website. I wish it had more detailed historical information.

Luckily, it has survived in an area where many period buildings have been lost.

The 1896 view posted above by Chuckaluck shows a glimpse of the Palm House (on the left) thereby giving one some sense of the Arcade Station's setback from S Central Ave as shown on the map posted by FredH. I would love to see a wider view taken from across Central Ave (or better yet from the Golden State Hotel) showing the full compliment of buildings fronting on Central. Big changes since the palm was installed in 1889.

Still can't read the sign in front of the big palm though.

I was there for Christmas party just few weeks ago. My friend's very reasonably priced (considering the location) pre-war NYC style 1bedroom apt was suprisingly clean and crisp. (the bedroom is on 2nd floor, looking Highland Blvd, right side of the entrance.) There is pool too, I heard, but didn't go see it.

Thx BRR. This is early. The palm doesn't seem to have its bit of fence yet or its sign. I rather liked the way palms used to be maintained, common through the 50's at least, with their "dirty petticoats" showing. It's supposed to be better for the trees.

I imagine they're letting the wind maintain the Longsteet Palms:

Santa Fe opened the Moorish-inspired La Grande railroad station, located on the corner of 2nd and Santa Fe, on July 29, 1893. It was used as a passenger terminal for Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway. The station was damaged in the 1933 Long Beach earthquake, and was replaced by Union Station in 1939.

After the 1933 earthquake, it looked like this (minus its dome):
