:previous: This one is positively swoon-worthy BRR. That's the Hotel Hollywood on the right. No spoilers on "What Price Hollywood?" Biff. You have to see it :-) |
Excellent post on 927 and 937 Orange Street FW.

Seen it and, given enough time, lived it. Could have said "Took me to the cleaners, Harvey's." ;) And from the top! http://www.gstatic.com/hostedimg/871acfa7b672010f_large http://www.gstatic.com/hostedimg/871acfa7b672010f_large http://www.gstatic.com/hostedimg/97e02d2a43244b60_largehttp://www.gstatic.com/hostedimg/97e02d2a43244b60_large Battery up! http://www.gstatic.com/hostedimg/d72666e9cbe63cea_largehttp://www.gstatic.com/hostedimg/d72666e9cbe63cea_large  Was the sign a discard or - could this be theater-adjacent parking? everywhere. They're wind chimes. Yes, it's a frightening thought, and I'm going to go lie down just thinking about it; but they're wind chimes. When I go to Fashion Island, I park near there. The upside is that they hardly ever make any sound (at least in my experience). |

odinthor beat me to it! From seecalifornia.com: "Made of bronze, the installation takes up an entire panel wall of the building and are considered a sculpture created by mural artist Tom Van Sant. They aren't his only piece of artwork but are certainly one of the most enjoyable because they make sounds. The chimes were installed in September 1967, and set a Guinness Book of Records as the world's largest wind chime."Here's a better picture. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...1.jpg~original www.newportbeachhistorical.org Robinson's is now Macy's, but the chimes are still there. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...2.jpg~original GSV |
This is the other building featured in the Julius Shulman photoset that I posted yesterday. It's still "Job 6269: Phelps and Morris, miscellaneous projects (Long Beach, Calif.), 1984". The sign on the side says "The Belmont" and "A Racquetball and Athletic Club".
http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...1.jpg~original These look like the racquetball courts. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...2.jpg~original A reverse view from near the "Sundeck" sign. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...3.jpg~original There was also a gym ... http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...4.jpg~original ... and a small pool. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...5.jpg~original All from Getty Research Institute The Belmont Athletic Club is still in business at 4918 E 2nd Street, Long Beach - just a stone's throw from yesterday's Gibraltar Savings location. The front has been opened up with large windows on the second floor. They've kept the Art Deco typeface. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...6.jpg~original GSV |

Large sand filled pot in front of doorman's ticket box for your cigarettes. Occasionally they might count the ticket stubs in the box to check if they had reason that some employee was cheating the box office and reselling tickets. Tuxedo man appears to be the theater manager. The assistant manager and doorman are in the back by the door. |

Irving Hindin sold dresses at 6363 Hollywood Blvd in the late '30s... Perhaps at the west end of the Art Deco building here... https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/Sz...=w1326-h501-no across from which in the vintage view is reflected this building (apparently then in Moderne diguise)... https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/YA...=w1075-h528-no By 1942, Hindin's had moved downtown to 317 W. 8th, which would have been where this building is now, one with a special name (at least up until May 2011)... https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/VF...=w1031-h707-no All GSV |

Another pictures from the same source shows the name as Wetzel's Coffee Shop. That hasn't helped me find an address. The search goes on ... http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...1.jpg~original simms54 on Flickr |
:previous: oops, I jumped the gun. I should have checked the rest of the photographs.
Did it say who the young lad was? |
I rediscovered the following screen-grabs in one of my older files.
They're from a family's 8mm movie (hence the lady posing by the Sanchez Street sign) #1 http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...922/dmXit6.jpg note the shuttered Plaza Cafe' #2 http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...924/uhbLIn.jpg old file #3 http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/128...922/S3APom.jpg below: In this similar view you get a glimpse of the end of the block (not sure if the freeway has been built at this point in time) #4 http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...922/q29Ycp.jpg old file Here's Sanchez Street today (no automobiles allowed) http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...921/cF1GJx.jpg gsv below: The Plaza Cafe' in 1949 (as seen from the northeast) -this might be just a few years earlier than the 8mm home movie.
