The Public Domain Review (cool site, BTW) just posted a bunch of pictures of the Los Angeles alligator farm:

Why couldn't someone have written the name of the movie theater on the back.

We have a mystery location.

Does anyone know where a "Lakeside Tour" might have taken place?

"Vintage 1920s Auto Racing Race Car Times to Lakeside Tour Los Angeles Photo"

Per the placard on the hood of the car I believe the race (or the car) was sponsored by the Los Angeles Times. Also note the Pacific railcar in the background.

Another mystery location but with a lot more clues. :)

That is one cute kid.

And the clues.

I've found numerous Arnts in the directories but no mention of a barber shop. (not yet, anyway)

For search purposes - Grandpa Arnts - So. Los Robles - Pasadena - 1920 -

Is it me, or does the stuff in the mirror not match the stuff in the room?

Thanks Markerm.

As for the mirror image. It looks correct to me except the tramson is noticeably open in the mirror and it appears closed in . .um. .not the mirror but that's because of the camera angle.

It's loooong gone.

A huge Macy's was torn down for this apartment building.

THANKS for finding the information on "The Times to Lakeside Tour". I really appreciate your help. :)

Here's another mystery race. This one from 1934.

And with a really spectacular car, to boot.

There is writing on a building (buildings?) in the far distance but it's too difficult to read. - except for a date, Jan. 13.

That's the Miller Golden Submarine from 1917. Per Wikipedia, created by Harry Miller, Barney Oldfield, and Fred Offenhauser. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Golden_Submarine.

Despite the "Hughes Photo LA" mark on the picture, some different opinions on location and date.

Indianapolis Speedway, Indiana in 1917 according to this one.

Getty Images say it's Daytona Beach, Florida in 1922.

As for Los Angeles, the Golden Submarine trialed and raced at Ascot Park on Slauson Avenue in 1917 and 1918.

Now for what it's worth - some fence forensics. :)

Here's a blown-up detail from a 1916 picture of Ascot Park. It shows distinctive chainlink fencing.

And the fencing in e_r's Golden Submarine picture.

https://i.imgur.com/g2rGIe5.jpg

Maybe entirely coincidental - the "Jan. 13" in the picture.

https://i.imgur.com/jO5k1QA.jpg

The Golden Submarine did race at Ascot Park on Jan. 13 1918.

The Golden Submarine was a popular exhibit at race meets for some years after it's final race in 1919.

Holy Toledo! I think you've solved it, Noir Noir.... An absolute amazing job of sleuthing especially using the rather unique design of the wire fence! :worship: (and the Jan. 13th date)

I thought I'd take a shot in the dark and try to find an old advertisement with that type of wire fence in the L.A. directories or elsewhere. (the race track no doubt bought the fence locally)

I didn't find an ad or anything of that sort but I happened upon this old metal sign for L.A. Fencing Co.

John H. Blair Mansion

Howdy!

Recently, I had the pleasure of exploring the J.H. Blair House, located at 1760 Courtney Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90046. I'm not sure if this home has been discussed before.

Does anyone know what the heck this last image is? It was located near the front gate/entrance; at the bottom of the driveway.

Mackerm May 19, 2023 10:57 PM

A guess: a bell ringer? Maybe it attaches to a long cord that goes into the house.
