I just noticed the Pioneer Memorial (with the waterfall turned on) so this should be pretty easy.

You can check out the waterfall HERE.

Broadway and Arcadia. They're refurbishing the waterfall, don't konw if they're going to turn it back on.

It's already turned on! Woo hoo! I drove by it some weeks ago and was pleasantly surprised. The strength of the waterfall isn't as strong as it was, though from what I've read, they can control the flow: http://www.ladowntownnews.com/news/a...5bd2ab638.html

I don't see any remnants of the sign....but I was a bit surprised by how 'hollow' the building is.

note the tiny skylight in the lower right corner of the building. I think this is a stairwell. [see below]

American Beauty = Barbecue.

I was hesitant to post this photograph because I wasn't totally convinced it was Venice CA.

"1916 VENICE BEACH CA BOARDWALK AMERICAN BEAUTY BARBECUE" asking........................................ $299.99

While trying to find additional proof [that this Venice], I happened upon this article about a planned "meat focused" restaurant in Venice.

And guess what the name of the new restaurant is going to be.

Yep, AMERICAN BEAUTY.

My question is: What does 'American Beauty' have to do with barbecue? am I missing something?

Interesting, e_r! The bouquets on the sign, I think, provide the clue as to what the namer was thinking about: The name refers to the 'American Beauty' rose, introduced as such in 1886:

https://i.postimg.cc/k5DmLYpq/AmBeau.jpg
Deutsches Rosenbuch, 1889, p. 183.

The name came to be a generic term used by florists to indicate long-stemmed red roses of perfect form; but the original was as above.

(There's a longstanding controversy about whether or not the 1886 rose was actually a re-introduction of an 1875 French rose 'Mme. Ferdinand Jamin'. I'm firmly of the opinion that it was not a reintroduction, as differences between the two roses were noted at the time.)

And the new restaurant is on . . . Rose Avenue.

Interesting inventory. From the picture in the other post, it looks like they knew a vulnerability in these safes that involved chiseling off some of the concrete on top to get access to the metal, then drilling holes and manipulating the lock mechanism. I guess they took their sledgehammer home with them.

My NCOIC taught me the vulnerability in the WWII-era field safes that were still used on our base. We had one whose combination had been lost. You lay it door side up in a jeep or pickup truck and drive around on rough roads. The vibrations ease tumblers into the unlocked position. Like all vulnerabilities, something the designers hadn't thought of -- vibrations from front to back (in the normal position of a safe on the floor) instead up and down.

Cheers,

Earl

As you can see, the American Beauty was made by the Getz Power Washer Co of Morton, Illinois, but this was a publicity shoot for the Globe Department Store. I can only see a passing mention to the store in post #9616, so here's another advert from the 1936 CD.

http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...eptStores1.jpg

Globe Department Stores Inc was still at 5100 S Broadway in 1956. By the early '60s, they'd either moved or downsized to 5136 S Broadway, and then spent 1963-69 at 5201 S Vermont Avenue. Does anyone have any photos (I haven't had a chance to look yet) - there's only a drawing in the link above.

But, of course, e-r.

Venice Feed and Fuel is listed in the 1925 Santa Monica CD at 200 Rose Ave. Sadly, it's no longer there; but the two-story wooden structure across the street is now The Firehouse restaurant at 213 Rose Ave.

Less convincingly, the two-story duplex with the pagoda-like roof treatment at the far left edge of the frame apparently also remains albeit in somewhat remodeled form at 105 Rose Ave. That would seem to place our photographer just east of Pacific Ave.

Incidentally, the railroad crossing Rose Ave. was PE's Santa Monica Air Line.

The above split screen is from 1964(historic aerial) and today. This is to show that the rear building had not existed didn't exist in 1964(as it does not in the Tower Auto Court photograph).

One more thing:
coincidentally, my friend who lives at one of the apartments in the photo sent me this photo TODAY. Apparently, when the "tower auto" was converted to apartments, they never got permits and aren't allowed to have kitchens in the apartments. The apartments are due for inspection and to remedy this, the apartment owners are going to remove all the kitchens, pass inspection, install new kitchens, and give all the tenants 50% off this next month.
AMAZING.

Yes, thanks, that image would be the original, which was not a Hybrid Tea but rather of an older class, Hybrid Perpetual (Hybrid Teas more or less originated from crossing a Hybrid Perpetual with a Tea rose). The Hybrid Perpetual 'American Beauty' became a standard rose offered, as cut roses, by florists. As ideals in roses changed, and as improvements in rose-growing happened, other varieties of long-stemmed red roses took their place at florists' shops, of the original 'American Beauty' . . . and the class Hybrid Teas became dominant . . . but the name had become stuck in the public consciousness such that it became the generic term among those buying red roses: You'd go into a florist shop and ask for a dozen American Beauties . . . and get the long-stemmed perfectly-shaped fragrant red rose of whatever variety was currently the florist industry's favored long-stemmed perfectly-shaped fragrant red rose.

EXCELLENT, FW--thank you. It was built in early 1913 by I. M. Decker, who seems to have been responsible for a number of houses in the vicinity. The owner from 1921 or so was Charles F. Speaking of American Beautys...maybe it was just a southern thing--this image is from a New Orleans wall--but, with thoughts in mind of a bare Paris apartment, I thought I would try to connect it to LA via Marlon. Have we seen him lolling on his front steps before? Have we tracked down where this house might have been? (Or if it's even his house, as the source (on Pinterest) claims.) Anita Stewart was a 1920s silent film star, notable enough to merit a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and though she couldn't quite make the transition to talkies, she retired from movies as one of the wealthiest women in Hollywood. When she lived in this turn-of-the-century house, it was a beautifully maintained mansion. There's no information about its history since Stewart's death in 1961 (or before that), but whatever transpired, it was bad. The terrace that was once on the front of the house disappeared and took the front of the house with it. An entire wing is just open in the back, with the bones of the house exposed to the elements. The listing has written this six-bedroom, six-bathroom broken dream off as a teardown, and that's probably what's going to happen because there's rarely such a thing as a $2.899-million fixer.
I also found this 2011 video of 7425 Franklin Avenue.

Indeed it has, it's now the Firehouse Restaurant. I saw it on my urban hike from the Expo Line station in Santa Monica to Venice. I even got a bonus fire truck on my pic:

Speaking of American Beautys...maybe it was just a southern thing--this image is from a New Orleans wall--but, with thoughts in mind of a bare Paris apartment, I thought I would try to connect it to LA via Marlon. Have we seen him lolling on his front steps before? Have we tracked down where this house might have been? (Or if it's even his house, as the source (on Pinterest) claims.) I suppose the butter would have come in here, perhaps with Wally, rather than in a Paris apartment. Anyway...

The image :previous: is from a November 11, 1949-LIFE collection taken when MB was "method[ically]"researching his role in the 1950 film, The Men. In some of the photos, Brando is joined by his maternal grandmother and her pooch." https://www.adweek.com/digital/marlo...lished-photos/

Here are a number of related images that might help identify both the street address and the neighborhood.

Please note there is no i in Olvera Street. "Earlier called Vine Street, Calle Olvera (Olvera Street) was renamed in 1877 after Agustin Olvera, the first judge of the County of Los Angeles who owned an adobe home in this area."

This photograph of Anita Stewart's home helped me solve a mini-mystery. :)

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/8...924/eHbcG5.jpg
ebay / from 1924 photo album

I've had this photograph in one of my files..and have always wondered where it was taken. [see below]

If I'm not mistaken, this is the Anita Stewart house!

Category :
The Pilgrim
Description :
Girl's home exterior

'The Pilgrim' is a Charlie Chaplin movie filmed in 1923, a year before the snapshot was taken.

update:

Now that the two photographs are side by side........
I see that the columns on the Anita Stewart house are placed in pairs while the columns on The Pilgrim house are individually spaced.

I guess this means my mini-mystery remains unsolved. :( *sad*

The first picture below is from a season 4 episode of CHiPs called 'Karate', which originally aired in 1981. Ponch and Jon are pursuing a suspect in Ponch's own car when they're pulled over by an LAPD motorcycle cop outside this faded gem of a building.

Using background buildings and the route they took, I managed to work out that it once stood on West 15th, just west of Figueroa, but the area was subsequently cleared to make way for the Convention Center Annex. Checking the City Directories, I found a listing in the 1969 edition which named it as the Otsego Apartments at 633 W 15th. That led me to a 1967 William Reagh picture on the LAPL website. Then, when I saw that the California State Library also has some William Reagh photos, I was able to find a larger version of the same picture. The cars outside appear to be an Avanti and a Peugeot 404 convertible.

California State Library

There was also a side view that LAPL don't seem to have.

http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...2.jpg~original
California State Library

The LAPL's caption describes it as "A Victorian residence on 12th St. near Figueroa, now an apartment building, the Otsego Apartments." If anyone's in the business of emailing corrections to the right places, maybe you could tell the LAPL it was on West 15th (their reference is LAPL00017612).

My post was originally going to end here, because I assumed the building was demolished to make way for the Convention Center. Then I spotted the picture below while I was looking for info on the John Parkinson house moving that GW mentioned recently. The caption names the building as the Edward Strong mansion.

http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...ardStrong1.jpg
LA Times/Larry Davis

The LA Times article below, dated May 12, 1989, says: "After nearly 11 months of frantic efforts, the once-stately Edward Strong mansion, a reminder of downtown Los Angeles' Victorian past, was towed away from its site of 102 years on West 15th Street, where it stood in the way of a $390-million expansion of the Convention Center." They add that it "was declared a landmark in 1976 because of its unique Queen Anne architecture in the Caribbean style."

Mansion Moves Out Ahead of Wrecker's Ball

Best of all, the article names its destination as the 800 block of South Coronado Street, near MacArthur Park. That means we have a happy ending, because the house is still standing there today.

Coming across this rendering of 825 S Coronado here, I was reminded of #826 and HossC's definitive history of it here on NLA, which is due for an encore. I for one am excited by the rejuvenation (I prefer this to "gentrification") of Westlake...at the same time keeping my fingers crossed that 826 S Coronado will survive....

Cambria Street School, Los Angeles

I don't believe we have seen this fine looking school on NLA. (yes, I searched)

At first I thought the school was located in Cambria, Califorinia [San Luis Opisbo County], but it's actually the Cambria Street School in Los Angeles!

We have discussed the Hollywood Canteen many times on NLA....& if I remember correctly, the Canteen Club Cafe has also been mentioned. (I tried, and failed, to find the posts).

THAT SAID....I'm pretty sure this is the first souvenir folder from the Canteen Club Cafe!

? Ill let you know if/when I find the source again

The church is lovely, but I mostly wanted to comment on the RR. sign. I don't believe I have ever seen one like it.

and with the raised letters...it looks like it might light-up!

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/6...923/aEWs1W.jpg

Any rail fans familiar with this type of r.r. sign in the Los Angeles area?

There used to be an identical sign at Magnolia and the UPRR (Former LASL) tracks in Riverside until the crossing was separated.

Western Pipe & Steel Company

I found this recently on ebay. The location isn't given....except for California. The riverbed in the foreground could be the Los Angeles River.

Here's the Western Pipe and Steel Company of California on the banks of the Los Angeles River on the 1921 Baist map.

Earlier CDs list the address as 1758-1764 N Broadway, but by 1921, it's 1758-1764 N Spring Street.
