__ "Hollywood Substation-general view. 8/10/17" http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/128...540/lRmgJC.jpg http://hdl.huntington.org/ Does anyone know where this small substation was located? below: at least we have a street number. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/800...661/2ssipK.jpg detail If we dig up a photograph of Hollywood around 1917...I thought we might be able to follow the electrical lines. (wishful thinking huh ;)) |

There's a "DRUGS" sign above the roof of the car on the left, and the 1956 CD shows there was a drug store at 9779 Wilshire. It also shows a Standard Oil gas station at 9800 Wilshire. I found a couple of contemporary addresses for real estate agent Bert J Friedman on Beverly Boulevard, so I'm guessing that the sign was just an advert. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...00Wilshire.jpg LAPL |

I just came across this side view of the Hollywood Substation.
http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...661/fhlGlK.jpg http://hdl.huntington.org/ Looks like there's a nice sized fountain in the lower right. Here's the front view I posted earlier. http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/show...ostcount=26684 __ |

We're looking south from about 450 S. Broadway. This building on the left is the Alhambra Block, on the NE corner of 5th and Broadway, with the California Savings Bank on the ground floor. They may have had a branch office in Pasadena, I guess. The Forve-Pettibone Co. was located at 510-514 S. Broadway (building is still there). In any event, the Examiner (in 1910) was at 509-511 S. Broadway putting them on the west side of the street. Likewise the Unique Theater, below 6th Street, on the west side of the street at about 631. |

(It always sounds weird to say "go up to the top of the hill and you'll be in a ravine.") P.S.: Unlike some other cities, the L.A. Marathon doesn't always travel the exact same route. This year, on March 15th, the L.A. Marathon begins at Dodger Stadium. |
I found this a couple nights ago on eBay.

...and I also found this.
http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/128...661/0acd3V.jpg eBay M. Polich. no street address. I thought maybe oldstuff could dig up some family history. (he has a knack for that) |
Looking northwest on E 7th Street from S San Pedro Street in 1961. Just above the streetcar is the Hotel Madison, with the recently-discussed Lyndon hidden behind it. There's more about both hotels in e_r's post #14856.
http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...1.jpg~original eBay Roughly the same view today. A few buildings on the right, including the Madison and the Lyndon, are still standing. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...2.jpg~original GSV |

But Lemster's post mentioning that is probably where Wilson's House of Leather/Starbuck's was/is made me realize that it's the corner of Little Santa Monica and Wilshire Blvd., so actually, if I'm correct, Wilson's/Starbuck's location would be behind the photographer of this photo and that's where the Pacific Electric Red Car tracks would be. ______________________________ I just found this same photograph on Alison Martino's Flickr page and she has it listed: Santa Monica and Wilshire Blvd. 1950 in Beverly Hills. A poster comments: If this is "Little" Santa Monica then Wilson's house of suede and leather replaced the Standard station; The TD Ameritrade (formerly Executive Life) building replaced the drugstore (L). The City National Bank building is the only thing here remaining today. The lucky fellow who owned the three-color Packard Caribbean convertible (R) was getting his kicks on Route 66 all right. [Right Earl?!] I still don't think it correct that Wilson's would be where the gas station is, because there are no PE tracks alongside it there. Even if they had been removed by 1950 the space where they were is still there today. |

Also...What cost $.25 in 1915 would cost $5.77 in 2015.. But, I believe that meals in restaurants have outstripped normal inflation. That .25 cent meal in 2015 would be more like $10.00 |

Maybe someone with better photo software can find it and work with the contrast. With what I have, I find a line above the date with a capital P and possibly a lower case "a" after that, but the rest is mush. There is probably some writing to the left of the "P" but it is not clear with the staining on the cardboard |

Regarding Alison Martino's date: it must be wrong for a couple of reasons. The image below is from 1953, and shows that the City National Bank building didn't yet exist. Hardly surprising considering the bank wasn't founded until 1954. Secondly, that Packard must be at least a 1955 model, and if it's a hardtop, it must be a '56. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...hireBH1953.jpg Historic Aerials For comparison, here's the 1964 image which shows the City National Bank building. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...hireBH1964.jpg Historic Aerials It didn't seem worth posting a "now" version of e_r's image as none of the original buildings are now visible from that corner. |

Here's an Ed Ruscha photograph of Wilshire Blvd. and Santa Monica Blvd. from 1967. You can see where the P.E. tracks ran between the "Santa Monicas," running top to bottom in this aerial. https://www.nationalgalleries.org/me...013AA73752.jpgEd Ruscha |
