Now do you want to try your hand at locating this photograph ;) (biggest clue? -maybe the gas-meter in the distance)

Looks to me like eastbound on Slauson as you approach Crenshaw. The gasometer would be the one that was located behind/near the old Arden Milk facility. There used to be a Thrifty Drug in a shopping center at that intersection that had a Ralphs and a National Shirt shop. If I'm correct, that corner was also the location of the old St. Mary's Academy Catholic Girls high school.

Does anyone know where this small substation was located?

below: at least we have a street number.

If we dig up a photograph of Hollywood around 1917...I thought we might be able to follow the electrical lines. (wishful thinking huh ;))

There is a Route 66 sign so I'm pretty sure this is Santa Monica Boulevard.

but where on Santa Monica Blvd.....what corner?

That's got to be the intersection of Santa Monica Boulevard and Wilshire Boulevard. The City National Bank building in the background was, and still is, at 400 N Roxbury Drive. Newer buildings now obscure it from this intersection.

There's a "DRUGS" sign above the roof of the car on the left, and the 1956 CD shows there was a drug store at 9779 Wilshire. It also shows a Standard Oil gas station at 9800 Wilshire. I found a couple of contemporary addresses for real estate agent Bert J Friedman on Beverly Boulevard, so I'm guessing that the sign was just an advert.

Good grief. It appears to me that someone has laid out SHEEP SKINS on the roof to dry in the sunshine.

Could also be a laundry. I had a friend in DC whose family owned a large laundry company; at the time, it was the only laundry that still would wash items by hand. He told me that when he was young, they used to clean customers' linen suits in the summertime by disassembling them; laundering each piece by hand and spreading it on the roof to dry (and bleach) in the sun, and then reassemble and press it.

Good guess, bighen. It's looking north on Vermont at W. 74th street:

I saw the similarity of the roof-line of two buildings on the east side of Vermont just north of the intersection. However, to the north of those, it looked like there were old bungalows where the piano store should be, so I thought I was wrong. But I went to the Assessor's website and saw that those buildings (3 of them in a row) date from 2004-5.

And in both pictures you can (barely) see the steeple of St. Raphael's Church on W. 71st St. near the left-center of both pictures just east of Vermont.

Of course this just a few blocks from Florence and Normandie, which was the epicenter of the 1992 riots. This stretch of Vermont was very much affected by the violence. So maybe it's not surprising that there are new buildings in the modern view; the old commercial ones may have burned.

This is just a few blocks south of Florence and Vermont. The red brick building in the distance is an ATT facility that I used to stand in front of to catch the Vermont bus. I went to Mt. Carmel High, located within walking distance. Our athletic field was located a block from St. Raphael's.

If I'm not mistaken, this is looking north on Broadway from 6th. On the right we have the Los Angeles Examiner Building which was in the 500 s. block. Seems like the entire confusion may have come from this small detail:

http://i1312.photobucket.com/albums/...psvob7n1x8.jpg

Definitely looks like it says the word "Pasadena" on that sign.

We're looking south from about 450 S. Broadway. This building on the left is the Alhambra Block, on the NE corner of 5th and Broadway, with the California Savings Bank on the ground floor. They may have had a branch office in Pasadena, I guess. The Forve-Pettibone Co. was located at 510-514 S. Broadway (building is still there). In any event, the Examiner (in 1910) was at 509-511 S. Broadway putting them on the west side of the street. Likewise the Unique Theater, below 6th Street, on the west side of the street at about 631.

If you turn left off Sunset Blvd., where the Super 8 Motel is on the corner, you'll be on Elysian Park Ave. and if you travel up to the top of the hill not far from there you'll be in Chavez Ravine aka Dodger Stadium.

(It always sounds weird to say "go up to the top of the hill and you'll be in a ravine.")

P.S.: Unlike some other cities, the L.A. Marathon doesn't always travel the exact same route. This year, on March 15th, the L.A. Marathon begins at Dodger Stadium.

Looking northwest on E 7th Street from S San Pedro Street in 1961. Just above the streetcar is the Hotel Madison, with the recently-discussed Lyndon hidden behind it. There's more about both hotels in e_r's post #14856.

I was having trouble seeing this as the corner of Santa Monica Blvd. and Wilshire Blvd. because if that was Santa Monica Blvd. in the foreground you'd see the Red Car tracks right there running alongside where the Standard Oil station is.

But Lemster's post mentioning that is probably where Wilson's House of Leather/Starbuck's was/is made me realize that it's the corner of Little Santa Monica and Wilshire Blvd., so actually, if I'm correct, Wilson's/Starbuck's location would be behind the photographer of this photo and that's where the Pacific Electric Red Car tracks would be.

______________________________

I just found this same photograph on Alison Martino's Flickr page and she has it listed: Santa Monica and Wilshire Blvd. 1950 in Beverly Hills.

A poster comments:

If this is "Little" Santa Monica then Wilson's house of suede and leather replaced the Standard station; The TD Ameritrade (formerly Executive Life) building replaced the drugstore (L). The City National Bank building is the only thing here remaining today. The lucky fellow who owned the three-color Packard Caribbean convertible (R) was getting his kicks on Route 66 all right. [Right Earl?!]

I still don't think it correct that Wilson's would be where the gas station is, because there are no PE tracks alongside it there. Even if they had been removed by 1950 the space where they were is still there today.

Similar to Tapioca....I think.

Also...What cost $.25 in 1915 would cost $5.77 in 2015.. But, I believe that meals in restaurants have outstripped normal inflation. That .25 cent meal in 2015 would be more like $10.00

E-Bay does have images of the reverse and there is writing on it, but it is so faint I can't make it out, other than the date of January 15, 1893. It is a cabinet card and I hoped the people's name would be on the back, and it may be, but.....
Maybe someone with better photo software can find it and work with the contrast. With what I have, I find a line above the date with a capital P and possibly a lower case "a" after that, but the rest is mush. There is probably some writing to the left of the "P" but it is not clear with the staining on the cardboard

Sorry, I should have said Little Santa Monica Boulevard and Wilshire Boulevard. I posted in a hurry, and Google Maps just calls it Santa Monica Boulevard, so I forgot to add the "Little".

Regarding Alison Martino's date: it must be wrong for a couple of reasons. The image below is from 1953, and shows that the City National Bank building didn't yet exist. Hardly surprising considering the bank wasn't founded until 1954. Secondly, that Packard must be at least a 1955 model, and if it's a hardtop, it must be a '56.

For comparison, here's the 1964 image which shows the City National Bank building.

It didn't seem worth posting a "now" version of e_r's image as none of the original buildings are now visible from that corner.
