Wow.

I’ve driven through this intersection ten thousand times (most recently last night) and I’d have never recognized it had the photo not been captioned.

I wouldn’t even know if we were looking east or west, but your second photo clearly shows we’re pointing east.

EDIT: I just went back a page and found your image of Los Feliz and Riverside Drive. Just amazing.

I like this sign:

The GSV images aren't quite up to date, but this building should be nearly complete by now. It's The Griffith at 435 W Lost Feliz Road, which now occupies the area on the right of Godzilla's photo.

:previous: Thanks HossC. I would imagine that a NLA favorite, the Tam O'Shanter (Est. 1922 - 2980 Los Feliz Blvd. btwn. Royce and Revere) would show up on a wider version of your aerial. I had been hoping to find it from the early street shots.

I’ve always told my friends that one of my favorite things about LA is that no matter how long I’ve lived here, I STILL keep finding out new and interesting things about the city. You’ve just given me another example of one of those things, Godzilla!

How have I never heard of this before?? Thanks so much for the fascinating info - or should I say…

OICVFMNX!

I’ll definitely have to go check the club out as soon as I get the chance.

The Griffith is to the right of the tracks and they are elevated now(actually the road dips under the tracks). The aerial above seems to be missing a street that is a continuation of Gardena north. San Fernando is at the right of the picture. On the left side of the track(west) is now a Costco(the reason I know this area pretty well). The Griffith is almost complete, though the road to it's east is still partially blocked. Having seen the building in it's almost complete state I agree with CBD that it's fugly and unimaginative.

The continuation of Gardena appears between 1952 (below, left) and 1964 (below, right). Godzilla showed us that the grade separation of the railroad and Los Feliz happened in 1957, so maybe Gardena was extended at the same time.

I was going to upload a wider view, but I think that the Tam O'Shanter appears in the bottom left corner of the aerial I posted.

The description of the picture being from the set of The Eagle is likely correct. Boxer "Gentleman" Gene Delmont is Rudolph's sparring partner in the second picture. He had his final fight in 1925, the year these pictures were taken, at the Hollywood Legion Stadium. He went on to have parts, mostly uncredited, in a number of films over the years. Here he is, second from right, with Bing Crosby on the set of A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court in 1949.

Actors Fred Sweeney, Bing Crosby, Gene Delmont and John 'Skins' Miller drink tea on the set of director Tay Garnett's film, 'A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court'. Crosby laughs while stirring Delmont's tea bag

I believe(?) that we are looking at the Hollenbeck Home for the Aged (demolished 1985 and replaced with a similar looking set of buildings). This would mean the photo was taken from the far-east end of the Sixth Street Bridge.

View from Sixth Street Bridge, Google Street View. Note the similar grouping of palm trees as in the vintage photo:

I wish I could find a pre-1985 photo of the Home, taken from the south, so that I could compare the buildings to the one in the old photo. I like to be more certain when I guess at a location. Having said that, I’m unaware of anywhere else one could see palm trees when looking north off of the (former) Sixth Street Bridge.

Here is a photo from the front of the building (looking west):
