This is why so many Americans have lost hope. You can't blame them..........

Especially considering Chi town invented the skyscraper. But there's optimism. We will catch no worries.

Once I read World's tallest I think my heart jumped a bit.

texcolo Jul 30, 2013 3:48 AM

Is that Roosevelt Avenue that goes under the post office?

I like the idea of the development, and wouldn't be surprised if A tower gets built, but have a hard time seeing the entire plan get built out.

Also: It sure would be nice if they'd spend the money on getting Caletrava's Chicago Spire built instead.

Yackemflaber69 Jul 30, 2013 4:04 AM

why not both?

The market would probably support Calatrava's. Just look at NYC luxury market for ultra expensive units. I'm sure they would sell units. Problem is the financing but I'm sure the original developers of this will want to eventually make it happen. A lot of pre 2008 developments are coming back online all over the nation.

They look a lot like Sears...boring...build the spire.

Build both  . The sears look is what makes it look good. Its a taller looking Sears Tower and those thri antennas/spires are awesome

Zapatan Jul 31, 2013 8:59 AM

something tells me that a 2000 footer isn't likely but even any supertall or highrise coming out of this project is good.

No offense but does Chicago need more antennas? Aren't Sears and Hancock enough? And also I would prefer a more unique design rather than just copying Sears.

The footprint of the tower is much more of an undulating triangle. Remove the antenna and it looks more like a Burj Khalifa ripoff than a Sears clone.

I'm just glad Chi Town is getting some new developments in the supertall range. I'm sure the 2000 ft one will change design since its many years from even being UC. Who knows the market might change in that period and it might not even be a 2000ft. Time will tell but if its going to be the U.S. tallest at this point, I'm sure they will make sure it stands out one way or another.

Steely Dan Aug 2, 2013 4:47 PM

i've changed the titled of this thread so that newbies who don't know better stop getting suckered into believing that chicago is on the cusp of building a 2,000' tower.

Xing Sep 11, 2013 1:47 AM

What's that? Chicago is on the cusp of building a 2,000' tower!?!

SamInTheLoop Sep 12, 2013 5:20 PM

^ Yes that's right, financing wrapped up, pre-leasing very strong, all construction contracts and permits in place, this one is ready to go any day now.

Oh wait, wrong thread, sorry....

It's such a rip off it's pathetic. The architect couldn't think up his own design?

are you blind? looks nothing like Khalifa. lol

This is unapologetic brutalism at its best, minus the cement.

any news on groundbreaking? or work in general?

Groundbreaking? That's a bit like asking where you can buy one of those flying cars, don't you think?

Funny enough, I'm happy to read about flying cars. Sure the beats the hell out of discussing ad nauseum the design of public plazas, panhandling in Chinatown and Chicago's shopping experience all week.

I know my fellow New Yorkers might rip me for saying this, but I think it's more fitting if Chicago has the nation's tallest building (not that it doesn't still by some measures).

SamInTheLoop Jan 9, 2014 4:00 PM

Which comes first: Successful Human Teloportation or Bill Davies' Post Office Plan

I've been reading up on some of the latest developments and thinking from the world's leading theoretical physicists, and I'd assign some pretty strong odds right now to teleportation...

wierdaaron Jan 9, 2014 5:38 PM

I say they should leave the post office as-is so it will be ready for when Gus Van Sant makes a shot-for-shot remake of The Dark Knight in a few decades.

ok heres one for you, what has a better chance revival of spire in march or construction of this in 10 years?

The only answer to this question is:

Neither, the better chance is the construction of the world's tallest pyramid (20,000' tall) on the southworks site by 2050.

Probably on a blueprint in the Middle East as we speak. The Pyramid of the UAE or something like that.

They will build it on an island in the gulf and then it will sink into the sea over a decade or two after it was built...

Huge empty building where the blue line underground intersects with Metra tracks above. . .What we need is for this to become is a transit center to supplement or even replace union station in some capacity.

This great empty space would serve that purpose well, but we are too short-sighted in this city; in this country, for that matter, to recognize transit opportunities where they exist.

Forget the foolish supertower dreams here and be real.

Transit. . .transit. . .transit is needed for this site!!!!

I mean I'd love a new 2,000-foot tower here but...wait...what's that I hear?

It's a faint whispering in the distance....it sounds like....Clinton Street Subway...

hear it? ;)

you may or may not know this, being from NY, but the clinton st subway is already there, it exist on the blue line. though i'm no engineer, i'd think you would only need to extend the platforms east to create a "superstation" and you'd be directly under the post office.

again, i'd like to see more advocates of this site for a major transit center.

ardecila Jan 20, 2014 3:59 AM

I think Staten Islander is referring to the city's plan to build a new subway running down Larrabee and Clinton. It would split off from the Red Line at North/Clybourn, run through Cabrini and West Loop, and join the Red Line again at Chinatown. It's not an official CTA plan, but something that city planners came up with.

I don't think that's possible because the tunnels are angling downward to get under the river. So any superstation is always going to be burdened with a 400-foot transfer tunnel.

i did know which plan he was referring to, however sarcastically. . .but thanks for that article reviewing comprehensive plans to improve the el over the years. i had forgotten some of those, and agree with the writer that we are a rail city and should continue planning expansion of rail, with rail.

my hope is that the ashland avenue brt becomes one of those plans to join the list that didn't make any headway.

Steely Dan Feb 7, 2014 11:01 PM

so with today's left field news about the spire project, maybe we'll get some big news regarding this project soon!

cuz, ya know, it's like totally a real project too and shit.

Imagine two 2,000 footers in Chicago, that would be freaking awesome. I'd certainly visit the city more often. :D

I recently spoke to a gentleman (who shall remain nameless) who claimed to have inside information regarding this very project. He assured me that it was in fact very real and is definitely moving forward.

He then offered sell me some magic beans which, in hindsight, I deeply regret not buying. They seemed like a really good deal.

Something will be built on that site eventually, although probably not anything near 2000 feet, we could get a 300 meter building or so who knows?

S.D.city Feb 17, 2014 8:43 PM

I hope they change the design of the towers, it seems to boring, unlike the Sears Tower (Willis Tower if your feeling formal). Ive noticed if someone is trying to build a highrise over 2,000 feet (or taller then the New WTC in NYC) there design is so plain and not worth lookin at. They are extremely tall eye sores to me.

you don't have to "hope" for anything.

for like the 1,000th time now, this isn't a serious proposal.

all of the images displayed in this thread are visionary/placeholder/design exercise kinda stuff.

I can't blame them. WTC1 was absurdly expensive. Well worth it, but its one for the books in terms of construction costs. All of this glitz and glamour comes with a price. Nevertheless, we will just have to be patient and wait for real updates on the project. Time will tell....

Skyguy_7 Feb 17, 2014 9:10 PM
