Also, an 8.8km extension of GO transit's Lakeshore West line to Confederation GO station started in February in Hamilton. Opens in 2019.

OK, heavy metro it is.
And no, utility work doesn't cut it for this thread. |
OK, REM and Hamilton GO are now on the front page main list.

The 62-mile New Haven-Springfield commuter rail line in Connecticut will open June 15.
It's currently the longest individual line on our list. |
Brightline's Miami extension will open 5/19.
|
San Francisco's 10 mile eBART commuter rail line has opened and is moving from the construction list to the completed list.
|
TEXRail is the longest line U/C in the US now correct?
|
Now that the Connecticut Hartford/New Haven line is open, I'd say it does indeed look like TEXrail is the longest individual line u/c in the US.
The Montreal REM is longer, but it's questionably a single line and not in the US in any event. Denver's Gold & North commuter rail lines together are longer, but that's two different lines. |
Are we REALLY comparing sizes right now? ;)

San Bernardino - Redlands
Does this count for the start of construction?
Zero-emission train from San Bernardino to Redlands would be first in North America By STEVE SCAUZILLO San Gabriel Valley Tribune June 25, 2018 "Once the San Bernardino County Transportation Authority completes a long-awaited passenger train between San Bernardino and Redlands, the agency will test an innovative technology that could transform train travel throughout Southern California. The agency recently started utility work for the Redlands Passenger Rail Project, a nine-mile passenger train using three cab car trains running on clean diesel technology..." https://i1.wp.com/scng-dash.digitalf...2C9999px&ssl=1 Image courtesy of the San Gabriel Valley Tribune. https://www.redlandsdailyfacts.com/2...ardino-county/ |

Not if it's only utility work so far. Update us when it moves to the next stage. |
Checking up on this list of projects likely to begin in 2018, originally posted here in February:

Orlando SunRail phase 2 is now completed and became operational today!
|
Yay! Moved to complete.

Hey Cirrus, since you are in DC do you know of any local blog that has been/will be posting any Purple Line construction photos? I really think the PL is the most interesting light rail project in the country right now.

I'm not going down the rabbit hole of creating endless subcategories. For the purposes of this list, Ottawa is either light rail or heavy metrorail. I'm inclined to leave it as light rail since it looks pretty similar to Seattle's nearly-a-metro LRT and it definitely lacks the vehicle capacity of true heavy metro, but I'm open to being convinced it should move.
Anyway, I'll add stage 2 once it's actually u/c. Right now only stage 1 is u/c, right? |

1. It is presented as a light rail system on the project's official website; 2. It's a light capacity system as opposed to other metro systems; But I agree that most of the stations are very similar to those in Vancouver's Skytrain or Montreal's REM. |
Ottawa's Stage 2 is scheduled to start construction in 2019. It will include 3 extensions affecting 2 different lines plus a completely new spur line to the airport. Since the Stage 2 was first planned, they have added further extensions to all 3 extensions and got special funding for those additional extensions. Preliminary study has begun for Stage 3.
The main distinction between Ottawa's LRT plan and those in Vancouver and Montreal's REM is that Ottawa's system will be semi-automated while Vancouver and Montreal REM will be fully automated. |
Oklahoma City Streetcar will open on December 14
|
Milwaukee streetcar will open Nov 2.
|
Fort Worth's TEXrail will open in January 2019.

It's with mixed emotions that I have to notice: A lot more things are coming off the list lately than being added to it. Projects are finishing, but new ones aren't following them.
It's not an accident. Trump's FTA is withholding the expansion money it's supposed to be sending to new transit projects. |

And this should come as a surprise to no one...
|
^ Yep... Well at least, the current US administration is just doing what they said they would.
Serving their voters. Who voted for them? Certainly not large dense cities in need of more advanced transit. This is a complete specimen of the clash between urban, suburban and rural areas. |
Milwaukee's streetcar is officially open and is moving to complete, except for a 0.22 mile branch that's not opening until 2020.

Not to be too partisan but if you want to see more transit, remember this Tuesday to vote for candidates who want to invest in infrastructure rather than more tax cuts for billionaires.

Amen brother, though I'd like to think that even though there are some wingbats on these threads, most of SSP users are probably the choir.

Ottawa's light rail, which had been scheduled to open in November, will be delayed until early 2019.

The Kitchener-Waterloo ION LRT line has also been delayed. Previously scheduled to open in December, opening day as been deferred until the spring of 2019. The main issue has been the delivery of full operational LRT cars.

Added Tempe.

Moved El Paso to complete!

Unconfirmed but more FTA New Starts grants are apparently about to clear. Los Angeles Westside Purple Line phase 3, Tempe AZ streetcar, Minneapolis Orange Line BRT all expecting to get their grants this week.
|
Orange County, CA streetcar is now under construction.

It smelled like Lou-dog inside the streetcar. I grew up in Orange County, which has traditionally been the epitome of post-World War II sunbelt sprawl, so this is very exciting to see. |
