Except for a tiny handful of places (New Rochelle, NY; Kirkland, WA), I can't see what in particular would be keeping police busy in 99% of U.S. cities to the point where they have to stop enforcing the laws on petty crimes.

Cuomo exempts construction, certain residential services from virus order

Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed an executive order, released Wednesday night, that requires businesses to limit their in-office workforce to 50 percent. The governor announced the order Wednesday morning but did not specify what “essential” businesses would be exempt from the rule, which goes into effect 8 p.m. Friday. The order includes construction, transportation infrastructure, financial institutions, shipping and “essential operations of residences” among the businesses that do not have to comply with the rule. The Empire State Development Corp. is charged with releasing a full list of businesses by 5 p.m. Thursday, according to the order. Businesses are permitted to request “essential” status from ESD.

Other cities have grappled with the question of whether construction is “essential,” and the answers have varied. Boston shut down its sites on Monday. San Francisco, which issued a shelter-in-place order Monday, included housing construction among its essential businesses. Construction also continued in Las Vegas following an order by the Nevada governor for nonessential businesses to close for 30 days. Sites also remained active in Philadelphia, after the city ordered the closure of non-essential businesses.

Construction groups urged New York officials to specifically exempt construction from the governor’s order. Some City Council members have called for work to halt on construction sites.

During multiple media interviews on Wednesday, Mayor Bill de Blasio :yuck: indicated that he favors the San Francisco model.

“So, I think construction has been exempted so far for valid reasons. Whether it is going to be tightened up going forward is a different discussion,” he told NY 1.

Fortunatly in my case, Microsoft Teams, T-mobile App, and cell phone are all I need. No video conferences thankfully!
I had a coworker accidentally flash his boxer-wearing crotch to a group of 8 people on a video call when he accidentally panned the laptop down to reach something behind it, so that was interesting at least.

I think many organizations are quickly learning the limitations of their vpns as everyone in the company tries to access it at the same time. I've taken to downloading whatever files I need overnight while it's at least somewhat functional.

Generally speaking, the incubation period of COVID-19 is believed to be around 5 days and illness figures tend to be a few days more than that (because people don't seek treatment or testing until they are sure they are quite sick and suyspect coronavirus) so the earliest effects of a lockdown in Italy should just be showing up now. Many parts of the US began aggressive "social distancing" at least several days ago--earlier on the curve than Italy's lockdown. So I don't think it's at all "too late".

I've seen a funny commercial for something featuring an incident like that.

Even companies that don’t make medical devices may chip in. General Motors Co. and Ford Motor Co. are exploring the possibility of making ventilators, spokespeople for the companies said Thursday. The auto makers have temporarily suspended vehicle production in North America until at least March 30.

The added capacity may eventually help ease the crunch, but it isn’t coming fast enough to keep up with mounting demand and may not be sufficient if cases surge, industry officials and health experts say.

“The actual available inventory on the shelf is gone,” said Chris Brooks, chief strategy officer at Ventec Life Systems, of Bothell, Wash. “There’s definitely more demand than there is supply today. We’re doing everything we can to ramp up supply.”

As many as 810,000 U.S. coronavirus patients could need ventilators by the end of May, if cases were to double every six days, according to Neil Carpenter, vice president of strategic planning at health-care consultancy Array Advisors.

Yet the Society of Critical Care Medicine estimated, in a report released this week, that more than 200,000 mechanical ventilators may be available in the U.S.

If more machines become available, there may not be enough trained professionals to operate them . . . .

To be fair, the US has 5.5x the population of Italy. This is also ignoring other dynamics, like how Italy has an older population that has a higher chance to death, and so on.

Even the GWB is tame. At 4:30 pm, its never ever like this.

Live cam (enlarge, quite a nice view btw). The outbound out of NYC is always cancerous. Not even a virus can change that mind numbing, stroke inducing commute through the Cross-Bronx to the NJ side via the GWB. That will never change.

illinois (aka chicagoland) appears to be hitting the accelerating part of the growth curve right now.

134 new cases confirmed in the last 24 hours, from 288 yesterday to 422 today.

at this rate, we'll probably cross the 1,000 threshold sometime over the weekend.
