Hope & 5th

Speaking of the 1909 map, did Hope Street ever run straight up the southern slope of Bunker Hill from 5th, as it seems to show?
Every time I think I have a grip on my hometown, another version comes forward to stymie me.

up until may of last year i would park my car on my lunch break in front of this house.I worked at the boy scout la office with is on scout way(any idea what the street was called before the 50s?),anyways the bars/fence on the windows are large, from what the locals have told me,this was at some point owned by the church, and was a half way house, not sure how true the statement is but from what i was told,at some point the kids in the area would throw rocks at the windows. If my memory serves there is a oil well a little south down the street.

Speaking of an inch of it's life....there's also this house on the southwest corner of Belmont and Court Street.

I'm not entirely sure what's going on here. Can someone explain it to me.(if those are security bars, they forgot to do the first floor)

A side view. Note that Court Street is blocked off at this point (for a parochial school I believe)

Looking at the lower windows, that seems unlikely to me - I would expect far less colored glass on the first floor windows if it had been the target of rocks. From Google Maps it looks like there is this type of screen even on the non-street-facing gable. They look like screens for ventilation - I can't tell if there are doors behind them, or windows. Perhaps if it was a halfway house those screens are meant to keep restricted residents inside.

I've searched high & low for vintage photos of Carlos Avenue, east or west of Gower Street. Anyone have any or know where they can be found?
Thanks.

Love this shot! This is the southwest corner of S. Main and W Ninth Streets. S. Spring Street ends at W Ninth Street just out of the picture to the right hense the reference to it. The Marsh-Strong Bldg., which still stands, would later be built on this site.

I see at least 7 pumpjacks on the property, but that doesn't mean any of them are operating. I suppose someone will have to drive by there some day to see if any are still running.

Great pics and aerials.....

I couldn't help but notice.....for an neighborhood that is within a stone's throw(or two) from Downtown, it looks to be underutilized......vacant lots, broad parking lots, etc....Densities look to be little different than what you would find anywhere in the LA Basin. You'd be hard pressed to find so much as a three-story building in ER's aerial.

I s'pose the underlying oil field has something to do with it, and the lack of major arterial roads......

but still........

(Understand I am NOT complaining......not in the least. I would be more than happy if they left the entire neighborhood hermetically sealed.....I just find it a bit odd that, apart from the Belmont fiasco (and a very, VERY expensive fiasco it was) much of the neighborhood has remained gentrification- and mostly CRA-free all these years.....)

Two slightly different kinds of palms, actually. Arcade has the only native palm - Washington Filifera (found in desert canyons near Palm Springs)---thicker-trunked, slower growing than the Longstreets, which are the more common Washingtonia Robustas, from Sonora and southern Baja.

Both naturally keep their skirts as youngsters, but the Robustas (Longstreets) more readily "self-cleanse" as they age. Santa Ana winds help.

As to pruning I don't think they care much one way or the other - to the living part of the palm tree, its brown, dead fronds are what Fredo is to Michael....LOL LOL.....the only exception being the skirts may help shade the trunks of the Filiferas in the intense desert sun.......though pruned Filiferas in the Coachella Valley seem to do just fine even with their horticultural version of a Brazilian Wax

Thx BRR. This is early. The palm doesn't seem to have its bit of fence yet or its sign. I rather liked the way palms used to be maintained, common through the 50's at least, with their "dirty petticoats" showing. It's supposed to be better for the trees.

I imagine they're letting the wind maintain the Longsteet Palms:

A Spring Street office building completed in 1915 has been purchased by a developer who plans to improve it as gentrification sweeps gradually through downtown Los Angeles' formerly depressed historic financial district.

The Corporation Building, at 724 S. Spring St., was acquired by Izek Shomof, one of the most active developers of aging properties in the city's historic core. Shomof said he plans to renovate the 13-story tower and rent office space to creative firms.

Terms of the sale by Spring & Main Property were not disclosed, but real estate experts familiar with the neighborhood valued the deal at about $10 million.

Spring Street was known as the Wall Street of the West in the early 20th century but fell from favor in the decades after World War II as financial firms and other white collar companies moved to newer buildings close to the 110 Freeway or left downtown.

The Corporation Building, like others in the area, came to house garment manufacturing in recent years, though it still bears the painted sign of a longtime former occupant that says "Dr. Campbell Credit Dentist."

Renovations will include retooling the ground floor retail space, Shomof said. "We're talking to restaurants and sidewalk cafes."

Some "creative" tenants, including Smart Architecture, are already in the building, which has no heating or air conditioning. "It's very bare-bones, but it gets great light from the large windows," said Douglas Hanson, a partner at the architectural firm.

Many former offices downtown have been turned into apartments or condominiums, but Hanson said he is pleased that the Corporation Building is to be revived as offices.

"We need to stay away from converting everything to housing," he said. "We need a mix of people living and working in the neighborhood."

Prospective buyers for the Corporation Building included hoteliers, real estate broker Ed Rosenthal of New Downtown Brokerage said.

"There is a lot of activity and changes in ownership in the historical area by Spring and Main streets," Rosenthal said. "The restaurant and boutique hotel scene is alive."

Ace Hotel, a Portland, Ore., chain of boutique inns catering to the young and hip, is building a 180-room outpost in the historic United Artists building nearby at Broadway and 9th Street. It is set to open in the fall.

The Shomof family has been redeveloping properties downtown since 1999, Shomof said. Projects include the revival of Spring Street in the blocks near the former Pacific Stock Exchange. In March, a partnership including the Shomofs bought three run-down early 20th century hotels around 5th and Los Angeles streets that it plans to improve.

Does anybody have any older pictures of South Park?

I'm trying to find some of the FRA Apartments building at 11th & Hope as well as the current South Park Lofts building at 8th & Grand (which was designed by Beelman originally as a parking garage).
