Yeah i don't think thats the right fit for the spot. Looks like it would block skyline views from much of the parks/ hills.

On another note i guess nothing ever materialized with any gondola? Like NYguy said above connecting Governors Island with Brooklyn Bridge sounds like such a good idea.

As far as the buildings go, what gets built won't be those exact designs, but this was ALWAYS the plan. We don't get Governors Island without this. It's basically a small town that isn't going to pay for itself, especially with the limitations on what can get built there (a casino would pull in billions).

The public areas will remain open, that won't change. The areas to be built on are the desolate areas, or the areas that have yet to be fully demolished. There will be some lowrises, but don't expect anything tall to be built on the island.

New York is a city of islands, and the city has shown that it can all be pulled together for the greater good of the city. The new model of public/private investment is what has helped us with the new parks like the Brooklyn Bridge Park for example. Both the city and state are in dire need of funds (as is the rest of the nation). It's essential that we keep private investment paying for such things and exploring ways in which it can do more.

There's a chance to build something here that enhances the experience on the island, not to mention finally allowing for a year round opening. Of course, nobody wants it to become Manhattan light, but that's not what's happening here.

This is a sick joke right? It would ruin the island.

Ugly and stupid.

Wow, I guess I'm the only one who's reaction was "how great, a landmark project for a landmark location!" ... :koko::shrug::tup::runaway:

The design isn't original

City Council greenlights Governors Island rezoning
Plan clears the way for nearly 4M sf of development

May 27, 2021

Quote:

Governors Island could soon be home to nearly 4 million square feet of new development.

The City Council on Thursday voted in favor of rezoning the south end of the island, which will allow for the construction of university space, hotels, offices, research facilities and retail across 34 acres. New development would be located within two areas that are home to vacant Coast Guard buildings and former barracks, which would be demolished.
Quote:

Ahead of Thursday’s vote, a number of changes were made to the Trust for Governors Island’s rezoning application, including a cap on building heights, and limitations on the amount of office and hotel space. Planned development includes a research center that would be anchored by a yet-to-be selected institution focused on studying the impacts of climate change. A timeline for construction has not yet been finalized.
Quote:

Ahead of her vote in favor of the rezoning, Manhattan Council member Margaret Chin, whose district includes the island, noted the high cost of restoring its historic buildings. The proposed development is expected to generate revenue to help maintain the island and turn it into a year-round public attraction.

“Governors Island was meant to be mixed-use so that it can help sustain itself,” she said. She also dismissed concerns raised by advocates that the rezoning would threaten public space, saying there is still “lots of precious open park space.”

Need another reason to visit Governors Island this summer? Well, If the rolling hills, bike rentals, glamping site and, uh, multiple sheep weren’t enough of a draw to convince you to hop a ferry to the tiny island, this flashy new addition just might do it.

After over five years of planning, a new wellness spa is set to open on the island this summer across three historic Army Barrack buildings on the island. QC NY Spa, the first U.S. outpost of QC Terme Spas and Resorts, will have manicured grounds, outdoor thermal pools with some pretty enviable views of Manhattan, relaxation rooms, saunas and more. On top of the spa offerings, guests will be able to purchase massages, Italian food items and alcoholic beverages. Sign us up!

When it opens later this summer, day passes will be available to access the spa and all of its amenities. (You’ll be able to book food, drink and massage services by appointment.) Tickets will soon be available online and at the door in the coming weeks. You can follow QC NY on Instagram for more up-to-date information on the opening.

Exactly the wrong kind of development needed here.

What would be the "right" kind of development? :???:

When Governor's Island was sold from the feds to NYC they mandated that A. The island is 100% self-supporting and B. The island can only be developed with commercial and institutional uses, no residential.

Now Governor's Island can meet both requirements.

It still would be nice if Governors Island could be the location of some museum/institution of national significance that would be a major tourist draw on its' own. What that would be I do not know. Or if not an attraction of national importance, at least a big draw that makes sense being on an island. Too bad the aquarium is already out in Coney Island.

More parkland not buildings.

No for profit business except the food carts should be allowed on Governors Island.

Curious how the Trust would could effectively maintain and improve a vast park with little to no revenue.

Except that would be illegal, and then there would be no public access to Governor's Island. You're calling for restricting public access and giving it back to the feds.

Again, the feds only gave up Governor's Island based on the following conditions: 1. No residential and 2. The park has to be 100% self-sustaining.

The park costs tens of millions annually to maintain, which has to be 100% supported by commercial development on the island.

NYC may soon announce Center for Climate Solutions winner

by Daniel Dunaief
April 21, 2023

The New York City Mayor’s Office and the Trust for Governors Island may soon announce the winner for the global competition to create the Center for Climate Solutions.

In October, Stony Brook University was announced as a finalist for the ambitious project. Northeastern University and the City University of New York and the New School were the leaders of the other bids.

A multidimensional environmental effort designed to educate the public, offer climate solutions and ensure equitable climate solutions, the competition, which was launched in 2020 by former New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio (D), is expected to create over $1 billion in economic impact and create 7,000 permanent jobs.

The winner or winners will create a space on the island that features views of the Statue of Liberty and the Brooklyn Bridge with several key features.

The center will provide a way to study the impacts of climate change, host a living lab that provides entrepreneurs and nonprofits that can test and showcase their climate solutions, serve as an urban center for environmental justice organizations, feature dormitories and housing and provide space for New Yorkers and visitors to discuss climate change.

Governors Island to Be Site of $700 Million Climate Campus
A “living laboratory” for climate solutions will rise on the idyllic 172-acre island off Lower Manhattan, led by Stony Brook University.

Quote:

On Monday, Mayor Eric Adams plans to announce a $700 million campus dedicated to finding solutions to address the climate crisis.

The city chose a consortium led by Stony Brook University to transform one of the island’s last big chunks of developable land into a 400,000-square-foot hub called the “New York Climate Exchange.” The campus, which will focus on researching climate solutions and training for green jobs, is expected to open in 2028.

The climate hub will serve as a “living laboratory” that features resilient design, with renderings showing shiny sloped buildings covered in vegetation that are intended to evoke the hills of Governors Island. It will include two newly constructed classroom and research buildings on three acres of land that are currently undeveloped and will also make use of some historic buildings on the island. The existing public amenities will remain.

How much to ride?

NYguy Apr 27, 2023 12:52 AM

^ Looks like they could put a coaster up top. I just hope they don't ruin that waterfront promenade, as there is no reason to. It's one of the areas I like to go bike riding. Could be just artistic license with the rendering.
