green building
After staring at that green building long enough me thinks that the woodwork windows appear to me to look slightly Japanese. Thus I would throw a guess that it could be Dntn LA, - Little Tokyo or the Toy District. That could also account for the red brick classic old type that was repainted over, and the 1 way street would be one of the East West streets, and the shadows show it to be late morning or early noon. That's all I can come up with.

"1965 Los Angeles Young Men Dog in &On 1939 Dodge Jalopy" https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...922/h12bHB.jpg eBay This was going to be a mystery location until the seller mentioned what's written on the back. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/6...923/Pv5yfZ.jpg But there's a conundrum. First, lets look at the present-day buildings that appeared in background of the 1965 photo. They're the same. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...922/NtC0zZ.jpg GSV But now let's look at the opposite side of the street where the jalopy was parked in a drive. The building you see is St. James Episcopal School. (hence the young gentlemen in the 1965 photograph / they were probably students) https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...923/bEoYxV.jpg GSV The school obviously doesn't match the arts & craft-like structures we see on either side of the jalopy in the old pic. At first, I thought the brick & wooden building(s) in the vintage photo was an earlier version of the school - BUT the present-day school building appears OLDER than 1965. for search purposes: 615 So. Oh, and one more thing. . .
What is this thing in front of the jalopy's right front tire? https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/8...922/uHdsJ0.jpg detail Mickey Mouse ears? . |

(In 1965 the car would be around 31 years old. A 31 year old car now would be from 1990. Just seems weird.) By the way, I looked up the eBay link and the seller advertises this as: "1965 Los Angeles Young Men Dog in & on 1939 Dodge Jalopy African American Gay interest" ? ? ? I notice this a lot on photographs on eBay. Any photo of guys together...the guys are always labeled "handsome" and/or "affectionate" if they're near each other. I guess the "gay interest" label gets results for sellers? How do they know that it doesn't turn off other buyers? Just pondering this noticeable pattern on eBay. |

Martin, I didn't know what a '39 Dodge looked like but thought if the caption was correct, they had a grill nearly identical to the classic '34 Ford. The Dodge actually has a very different look. I also do those time span comparisons and they can often be pretty hard to fathom. |

mystery location. "1900'S NEGATIVE..VICTORIAN LADIES,REAL ESTATE SIGNS SANTA MONICA CALIFORNIA" https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/xq90/924/6cXKMY.jpg eBay If you look closely there is a smallish house or bungalow behind the 'Mountain Crest Estate' sign and another building along the left edge of the photograph. (perhaps the two structures are remnants of an old farm) There also appears to be a very large sign on the crest of the hill but all we can see of it is an A and one third of the 2nd letter (R?) I thought it would spell out 'Moutain Crest Estate' but obviously it doesn't. Also note that at the bottom of the 'Mountain Crest Estate' sign it say. ."Inquire at Store" with a finger pointing [B]- - - - > Oh, and one last thought: I wonder if the women just bought property there. They seem quite jubilant. . |

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/6...922/G42blC.jpg Boy! 'Mountain Crest Estate' is a tough nut to crack!...I just finished an hour or two of searching. Let's review: We're talking about an early subdivision, right? And, per the 'firebreak' sign, the location (560 acres) has to be somewhere between Topanga Canyon and Laurel Canyon. My guess is. . the 729 Central Building is in downtown Los Angeles. (or perhaps Santa Monica?) Although I didn't find any information on 'Mountain Crest Estate' I found a half dozen or so rabbit holes that I plan to revisit. :) Fun times! |

mystery locations. There is a group of photographs, taken in the 1950s, of vintage cars parked in various area of Los Angeles. I don't know if the photographer randomly drove around L.A. looking for these cars or if he . . ummm. . .had some other means to locate the cars. Some of the photos include the make of the car, others do not. (the photographs are being sold separately) It would be overkill if I posted them all at once so here are the first two photographs. "Original B&W Photo - Vintage Car - 1950s Los Angeles California" https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...922/74aBh2.jpg eBay "Original B&W Photo - Vintage Car - Rolls Royce - 1950s Los Angeles California" https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...923/sY8NhI.jpg eBay Faaan-ceeee!...I'm a bit surprised the Rolls is parked in a medium-income neighborhood. . |

"Original B&W Photo - Vintage Car - Windsor - 1950s Los Angeles California" https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...924/DKQQhQ.jpg eBay I don't know if "Windsor" is the make of the car or the location (Windsor Square comes to mind) . |

I still think the partial building on the left of the "green building"photo is a US Bank building logo. It's the only logo I've searched that fits that "ank" font:

I agree that the logo looks similar to U.S. Bank, but they are not listed in the 1981 yellow pages and Wikipedia says they did not enter California until 1988.

Did a Google search for US Bank locations in Los Angeles and drove the Googlemobile around several of their neighborhoods. Not all. Nothing. Some thoughts. Just my two cents. Notice the street sign. It implies drivers might believe there is head in parking available. Would such a sign be near downtown LA or other neighborhood where modern high-rise buildings exist? There is no sign atop the brown or black building. My guess it is brown, a very popular color of spandrel glass and stone in the 1970s. Thought it strange the USBank logo is off to the right at the top of the building. More appropriate locations would be to the left or center. Assuming it is a USBank logo and it does have the right font. The tenant space to the left has a garage-type door but no curb cut. Thought this strange. Maybe I've been watching too many detective dramas. Could the street have been repaved some time? Good luck. Beginning to think this is not Los Angeles. Could it be Burbank, Glendale, Hollywood, or somewhere else. |
