Looking online, it seems that Phillipe's had three locations prior to 1001 N. Alameda.
It was started at 300 N. Alameda in 1908, moved to 246 Aliso in 1911 and then to 364 Aliso in 1918, where it stayed until construction of the Hollywood Freeway in 1951. Here is the 346 Aliso location http://img833.imageshack.us/img833/1905/philippes.jpg The french dip was created at this location. ~Jon Paul |

Fredh, I LOVED your post on China City! I always thought it was a part of Chinatown. I had no idea it was at a different location. The Botiller Mansion is amazing G_W. Isn't it the one people usually associate with 'Sunset Boulevard'? |
Here's a haberdasher with a flair for marketing.

Well, e_r, there wasn't actually a 10086 Sunset Blvd... and the house at Irving and Wilshire used for filming is gone. Maybe given its prominence on Sunset, Angelenos do think of the Botiller house when they think of Norma & Joe. Btw, in the movie Joe ducked the car reposessors in Judy Garland and Vincent Minnelli's driveway at 10000 Sunset... |

The Centaur Cafe on Sunset Blvd. in 1935. I've never heard of this place before and the street address is unknown.
I can't quite make out the number on the awning. Anyone have access to a 1935 directory? http://img31.imageshack.us/img31/869...rcafeonsun.jpg http://digitallibrary.usc.edu/search...=1327621083159 |
I just came across this photo and realized it's a continuation of the above photo.
This view is directly east of the Centaur Cafe (I recognized the house with the lattice balcony). http://img208.imageshack.us/img208/6...lvdoffices.jpg http://digitallibrary.usc.edu/search...=1327624993717 above: The offices of C. I've driven by that building many times and I don't recall ever seeing water in the pool. I've walked around Echo Park Lake, but I never even noticed the pedestrian tunnels that go under the freeway. Very interesting! |

Neither building is there anymore, but it looks like the house with the lattice work from the 1935 images may be the house with the two chimneys behind the parking lot. http://img708.imageshack.us/img708/668/9131sunset.jpg ~Jon Paul |
:previous: Good job Jon Paul! I'm impressed.
We'll have to check out that house....but it looks like it's roof is missing! ___ OOPS, you're talking about the house on the right aren't you?...I can see a resemblance now Jon Paul....my bad. ___ |
I just looked through some different views and I believe you're right Jon Paul.

I do see your point, though, about the Resnicks and designer wheelybins---perhaps a D&G logo on the green waste bin? |

Mickey Cohen with Candy Barr on the Sunset Strip in 1959. http://teretereba.com/blog/media/blo...barr-cohen.jpg http://teretereba.com/blog/2010/05/2...hen-the-opera/ Candy Barr plays vinyl. Like Lila Leeds, she just didn't know how to care for an LP. Bad girl. http://26.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_ld...98p9o1_500.jpg http://retrodoll.tumblr.com/post/2367148209/candy-barr Also like Lila Leeds, she was busted for pot. Twice. Think she ever smoked with Mickey? http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-X5EWcFsQOY...ownwd_1969.jpg http://quixoticjoust.blogspot.com/20...-dean-and.html Like Mickey, she had troubles with the IRS. http://dkse.net/david/Candy.pot.jpg http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-8erHKL_iPa...an_11-1959.jpg Don't know the story behind this one, but she looks happy. http://dkse.net/david/candy.behind.bars.jpg http://www.allstarpics.net/0033651/0...-barr-pic.html The FBI looked into Candy Barr's relationship with Jack Ruby. http://dkse.net/david/candyb.FBI.jpg http://www.buzzfeed.com/dulltooldimb...-document-1zd9 Did this club belong to Mickey? I'll bet he was at least connected to it somehow. Given the choice, I'd rather see Candy Barr at the Largo than visit Marineland. http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/phot...candy_barr.jpg http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/thed...ek8/index.html There are hundreds of Candy Barr photos on the web, but most seem a little risque for this thread. Here's a safer one with, supposedly, Joan Collins. http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2417/1...743_z.jpg?zz=1 http://www.flickr.com/photos/plastic...7602897621936/ Well, enough cheesecake I guess. I'm probably boring some of you gents. ;) In the early 90's Candy Barr (I love saying her name, in case you hadn't noticed) died from complications of pneumonia. Her grandson, Ryan Barr, named his first daughter Candy Barr after her. He also has another daughter, Snickers. |
:previous: Great Candy Barr post 3940dxer! My last name is Barr and my parents almost named my sister Candy.
They thought it would be a cute name....unaware of the infamous stripper. Quote:
