:previous: Wonderful post FredH!! These photographs (and the illustration) are new to me!
I only recognize one of them...the reenactment. ___ T2, radishes and onions...not something I would serve on a first date. (it hardly mattered I guess). |
Morey murder suspect, 23 July 1958. Charles E. Brubaker -- 39 years (confessed to the murder)
http://digitallibrary.usc.edu/utils/...rey&DMROTATE=0USC http://digitallibrary.usc.edu/utils/...rey&DMROTATE=0USC Looks like the thousand yard stare. Wonder if he suffered from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder? He was looking for more than Fig Newtons, onions and radishes! |
Sherry's Restaurant/Key Club/Morey Murders/Radish Roses
Quote:
Irene Morey's radishes made me recall that it was my job, as a child, to make the radish roses for "special" occasions (because I was "artistic" I guess). Such a 1950's thing to be doing. I wonder what ever happened to poor Kent Morey. Not the best start in life. I shudder to think he may have been the one to find the bodies. |

I've been intrigued by this large house northwest of downtown for quite some time.
http://imageshack.us/a/img26/1120/ec...near1nedge.jpg gsv The juxtaposition of the old wood frame house with the skyline of downtown Los Angeles evokes memories of classic noir. http://imageshack.us/a/img833/3489/e...colton2012.jpg gsv The street in the foreground is Colton. The house faces a stub of an un-named dead end street. __ |

Edgeware and Colton
Quote:
gsv I know that house. 172 Edgeware. When I watched them clear the land for the new Belmont High School (if you recall that debacle) from the 3rd & Hope tower (now Bank of America Plaza), I was fascinated when the bulldozers spared these five or six properties. I actually drove over to see what was up. A very nice lady told me they had no idea what was going on as they'd been condemned and reprieved so many times. Now Vista Hermosa Park (the first new park in DTLA in 100 years) comes right up to their back doors. https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-0...648%2520PM.jpg gsv The house was just west of the Park Tract, which ended at Boylston and this site must have pretty much overwhelmed by the Los Angeles Oil Field (if you remember Emma Summers, The Oil Queen of California and all that), so it really is a survivor (although I couldn't find a building date for it*). And it does look most extraordinary left free-standing next to all that open land, shorn of all its immediate neighbors. It must have been in a relatively ritzy neighborhood at one time and now it has a million dollar view, a killer backyard and an ugly streetlamp. Zillow estimate: $404K. https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-r...646%2520PM.jpg wiki *Is it there in 1909? With the changes in street names, I'm not sure. It should be two streets east of Douglas, but that one isn't even marked. 1st & Beaudry is at lower right. https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-n...118%2520AM.jpg http://www.bigmapblog.com/2011/birds...f-los-angeles/ Although this map isn't 100% accurate. It doesn't show Abigail Stark's house for instance. |

RIP Gloria Pall.
http://imageshack.us/a/img580/5692/aabtvvoluptua.jpg http://www.mediabistro.com/fishbowlla/ Ms. Pall debuted on KABC-TV as 'Voluptua' December 15, 1954. http://imageshack.us/a/img703/2176/aabtvvoluptua1.jpg http://www.capitalbay.com/headline/2...s-aged-85.html Between breaks she took calls on her mink trimmed telephone that didn't ring, but sang softly, "Voluptua...Voluptua". She also read from a heartshaped 'Book of Secrets' on how to attract and hold men. 'Voluptua', also know as the 'Eyeful Tower', unfortunately was a little too hot for the small screen. She was fired after only seven weeks under pressure from bible-thumpers who called her 'Corruptua' from pulpits throughout California. http://imageshack.us/a/img826/497/aabtvvoluptua2a.jpg http://www.capitalbay.com/headline/2...s-aged-85.html I have no idea why the camera man is in his pajamas. I'm including this photograph because it's so odd. The set designer deserves an F for gluing sea thingys on the wall. And her wardrobe....wtf. A bracelet over her sweater, and the other one is fur lined. lol...you've gotta love it! http://imageshack.us/a/img132/5199/a...terrordave.jpg http://terrordaves.com/2011/06/05/th...rn-california/ __ |

Edgeware between Colton and Second was once Kern St. According to insurance maps, the renaming took place after 1921, and there was no house on the southeast corner of Colton and Kern/Edgeware before then either. The house now at 172 N Edgeware must have been moved to this lot, perhaps from somewhere in the neighborhood--its architecture is characteristic of the mid 1900s. |

Notice in center right where North Bixel continues south of West Court Street - It just so happens this is the location for the FILM -THEY LIVE with Roddy Piper the Grassy Area on the very far right side is the place where they ate the out side "soup Kitchen" after working , and across Court Street is the Chapel where Roddy discovered the box of Sun Glasses- the Church Building ( #1222/1223 W Court) is still there duplex apartment - with adobe flat roof - and can be seen in Google Street View - at that location - and in bottom photo from movie THEY LIVE- *
the palm tree in the photo can be seen in the ariel view from that map photo below ! far right on the green grassy slope- - http://imageshack.us/a/img703/162/ec...denonbixel.jpg - http://images.monstermarketplace.com...ve-400x313.jpg - http://i.ytimg.com/vi/Jwb_Dw2rYsM/0.jpg |
Bear with me, I am going to linger in this area a bit longer.
__ Here are some interesting survivors along a short stretch of Council Street. http://imageshack.us/a/img687/4572/e...comeaerial.jpg google street view I'll start with these fine homes on the northeast corner of Council & Welcome Street. http://imageshack.us/a/img339/8531/e...tcouncilst.jpg gsv ...from the opposite direction. http://imageshack.us/a/img541/5161/e...councilstt.jpg gsv And finally this straight on view. (I'm not too fond of the building materials) What is it called when they let the mortar ooze out like that? http://imageshack.us/a/img248/2402/e...ckcouncila.jpg gsv The corner house with it's southern neighbor on Belmont Avenue. http://imageshack.us/a/img266/1838/e...eatisthisb.jpg gsv A detail of the Belmont Ave. neighbor. Can someone explain it to me.(if those are security bars, they forgot to do the first floor) A side view.
