Sherry's Restaurant/Key Club/Morey Murders/Radish Roses
 

Five or six yeas ago, after graduating from high school at the end of her sophomore year, and getting bored with college after a semester, my daughter worked as the videographer at the Key Club (a successor to Sherry's at that address) where the Cohen shooting was still a topic of conversation. She seems to hit all the high (or is it low?) noir spots. Thx FredH, I'll pass the link along. Young people do love history.

Irene Morey's radishes made me recall that it was my job, as a child, to make the radish roses for "special" occasions (because I was "artistic" I guess). Such a 1950's thing to be doing.

I wonder what ever happened to poor Kent Morey. Not the best start in life. I shudder to think he may have been the one to find the bodies.

I know that house. 172 Edgeware. When I watched them clear the land for the new Belmont High School (if you recall that debacle) from the 3rd & Hope tower (now Bank of America Plaza), I was fascinated when the bulldozers spared these five or six properties. I actually drove over to see what was up. A very nice lady told me they had no idea what was going on as they'd been condemned and reprieved so many times. Now Vista Hermosa Park (the first new park in DTLA in 100 years) comes right up to their back doors.

The house was just west of the Park Tract, which ended at Boylston and this site must have pretty much overwhelmed by the Los Angeles Oil Field (if you remember Emma Summers, The Oil Queen of California and all that), so it really is a survivor (although I couldn't find a building date for it*). And it does look most extraordinary left free-standing next to all that open land, shorn of all its immediate neighbors. It must have been in a relatively ritzy neighborhood at one time and now it has a million dollar view, a killer backyard and an ugly streetlamp. Zillow estimate: $404K.

*Is it there in 1909? With the changes in street names, I'm not sure. It should be two streets east of Douglas, but that one isn't even marked.

I have always wondered about this house. My office is at roughly Beaudry and Colton/Court facing this house. In the 1990s the Park Track was already mostly empty lots probably due to the Temple Urban Renewal Project

Mickey's Cad
 

I was told a while back while inquiring about Mickey's Cad that it is now in Australia.

Two streets east of Douglas is correct, but there's no house there.

The streets marked Ohio and Metcalf are now both named Bixel, with a jog at Court Street. Between Colton and 1st, Bixel has been eliminated because of the park.

Between breaks she took calls on her mink trimmed telephone that didn't ring, but sang softly, "Voluptua...Voluptua".
She also read from a heartshaped 'Book of Secrets' on how to attract and hold men.

'Voluptua', also know as the 'Eyeful Tower', unfortunately was a little too hot for the small screen. She was fired after only seven
weeks under pressure from bible-thumpers who called her 'Corruptua' from pulpits throughout California.

Edgeware between Colton and Second was once Kern St. According to insurance maps, the renaming took place after 1921, and there was no house on the southeast corner of Colton and Kern/Edgeware before then either. The house now at 172 N Edgeware must have been moved to this lot, perhaps from somewhere in the neighborhood--its architecture is characteristic of the mid 1900s.

They rehabilitated that house sometime around 1998-2002. It was in really bad shape, and it was hard to believe anybody would even bother. But I am glad they did.

What a trip. I was looking for something else and stumbled across a brief family history of a resident of this boarding house; Eddie Farrer.

Notice in center right where North Bixel continues south of West Court Street - It just so happens this is the location for the FILM -THEY LIVE with Roddy Piper the Grassy Area on the very far right side is the place where they ate the out side "soup Kitchen" after working , and across Court Street is the Chapel where Roddy discovered the box of Sun Glasses- the Church Building ( #1222/1223 W Court) is still there duplex apartment - with adobe flat roof - and can be seen in Google Street View - at that location - and in bottom photo from movie THEY LIVE- *
