^ you got a wise and practical point, but i would guess the mta has a hangar sized warehouse full of traditional subway tiles to use up.
i would say they should just give them away to restoration hardware and home depot and the like. it was trendy to use subway tiles in home bathrooms and bars and restaurants back in the oughties, but it seems that design era has passed, so they are stuck with them lol. |

Exclusive: City to begin community engagement for transformation of Cross Bronx Expressway By Aliya Schneider Posted on March 24, 2023 The city is launching a wave of public events to give Bronxites the opportunity to be heard as efforts to reimagine the Cross Bronx Expressway are underway. The city was awarded $2 million through a U.S. Department of Transportation Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Sustainability and Equity (RAISE) two-year grant to conduct a study of the expressway, which was announced in December. The study has not begun yet, and the public engagement process will guide its formation, a NYC Department of Transportation (DOT) spokesperson told the Bronx Times. According to Mayor Eric Adams, the study will look at ways to reduce pollution and noise, improve safety and sustainability and reconnect communities that had been torn apart by the expressway’s construction. More specifically, the government agencies will look at strategies for decking parts of the expressway — also known as capping — to create new public open space above the highway, according to Adams’ announcement. more: https://www.bxtimes.com/community-en...nx-expressway/ |

STREETSBLOG EXCLUSIVE: Andy Byford to Join Amtrak By David Meyer Mar 23, 2023 more: https://nyc.streetsblog.org/2023/03/...o-join-amtrak/ |
Yeah saw this great news in the Amtrak thread yesterday. Whats interesting is i just recently read something where Byford was literally quoted saying he didnt think he'd be running any agency again but instead would be an industry consultant or something along those lines. I think Lieber and Davey are doing a pretty good job at MTA but Byford returning would still be awesome. The guy just got it - and man does the MTA need people that get it... withoit idiot egomaniacal governors getting in the way. He should do an excellent job at Amtrak. Maybe a sizable NECHSR allocation can be accomplished towards the end of Biden's term in the range of 50-100 billion that with Byford at the helm will make full NEC modernization and HSR implementation actually doable.
|
Byford might be one of the only people who can talk to republicans in congress and maybe, just maybe build support from them
|
what about pete tomlin, byford's hand picked signaling expert at mta?
he quit right after his boss byford got run out of town by cuomo. what's he up to these days? maybe amtrak or mta can get him back! |

Happy Byford is back in the US doing stuff. I do wish he was running MTA instead because they are DEEPLY in need of his talents.

Quote:
Agreed. I'm satisfied with the operational administration of Lieber and Davey but I'm not convinced they have transformative vision that's badly needed at the MTA. I would have loved to have seen Byford brought back to aggressively direct MTA Construction & Development with a great deal of autonomy and separation from the day-to-day operations of the system. The MTA really needs an operating director and a planning director - different jobs with different needs - that would hold essentially the same level of power. |

That's terrible. A memorial will likely be placed out there to honor their memories. |
finally! thank the traffic gods — this would solve the second worst issue with nyc, which god knows why allows massive trucks and even highway semi trucks within city limits:
City to pilot local delivery ‘microhubs’ to curb truck congestion starting this summer By Ben Brachfeld Posted on April 6, 2023 more: https://www.amny.com/transit/city-pi...n-this-summer/ oh and imo the biggest issue in town is the inhumane lack of streetside benches and public restrooms. |
Finally indeed.
|
It would be nice if everything to fix run of the mill issues in NYC wasn't a "pilot" that lasted 2-3 years before a report is even coughed up let alone implemented at scale. I mean solutions exist elsewhere quite clearly but NY exceptionalism just mostly ignores them.
I'm not even sure that congestion pricing will ever actually see implementation or that it will work if it does because people are going to cheat like crazy and the city/state doesn't care to go after them. |
interesting!

New trains hit PATH tracks with plans to boost commutes By Stephen Nessen and Clayton Guse Published Apr 13, 2023 … Three of the cars made their debut at Hoboken Terminal, and are the first of 72 the Port Authority ordered for the system from Japan-based manufacturer Kawasaki. By the end of 2024, officials said the new equipment will enable PATH to increase the length of nearly all the trains on the World Trade Center-Newark line from eight cars to nine. … All the new cars are scheduled to arrive by the end of 2023, at which point Port Authority officials said they plan to run PATH trains every three minutes during rush hour, down from current peak headways of five minutes. … The cars cost the Port Authority $172 million, and were originally scheduled to be delivered in the spring of 2021. more: https://gothamist.com/news/new-train...boost-commutes |

4/20 saw 4 million NYC subway riders roll underground for the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic began: MTA By Robert Pozarycki Posted on April 21, 2023 The MTA blazed into the post-pandemic record books on 4/20 Thursday as the New York City subway system saw more than 4 million riders in a single day for the first time since March 12, 2020. Approximately 4,002,961 paid rides were recorded in the subway turnstiles on April 20, 2023, the highest number in three years, the MTA and Governor Kathy Hochul announced Friday. It was also a record-setting day for the MTA’s OMNY contactless fare payment system, which set a single-day subway record of 1,699,914 taps, or 42.5% of all paid rides. more: https://www.amny.com/new-york/4-mill...-pandemic-mta/ |

What is the all time peak for NYC subway riders in a day?
I feel like it is usually a good indirect proxy for relative population change in the city (setting aside WFH). |
^Probably during WWII
|
^ close! --
it was just post second world war -- which makes sense with bringing the boys back home and all that: During the late 1940s, the system recorded high ridership, and on December 23, 1946, the system-wide record of 8,872,249 fares was set.* * note -- there were a million less residents of nyc back then as compared to today (that is, around 7.5M in 1940s vs 8.5M today). |
^ But more elevated lines were still operating with dozens more stations than currently exist today. NY is no doubt the only subway system on earth that's smaller today than it was 70 years ago.
As for ridership, lots of other factors at play here including postwar auto ownership and suburban development wasn't in full throttle yet which means older neighborhoods with better subway service were more dense thus more ridership. Most here will be familiar with the factors. |
^ yes, lots of other factors, but still amazing how little ridership there is today, less than half of that peak 1940s ridership day, yet with there being officially a million more residents (and we know more people in town than that with undocumented, workday commuters, etc.).
it's an uber world i guess. |

MTA seeks to take over Harlem properties via eminent domain for Second Avenue Subway expansion By Jose Martinez, THE CITY Posted on April 21, 2023 This article was originally published on April 20 4:50pm EDT by THE CITY The MTA is pushing ahead on plans to extend the Second Avenue Subway north through East Harlem by making a move to acquire properties in the path of the project, court papers show. MTA to pilot 5 free NYC bus routes, with 1 on Staten Island, as part of state budget deal Published: May. 01, 2023 … In addition to using the pilot program to monitor ridership trends, Lieber said the agency must emphasize that only the selected routes are free, and riders must continue to pay on all other routes, with the agency losing millions each year from fare evasion on buses. “What we don’t want to do is to have people to reinforce the idea that all the buses are free. We made the buses free during COVID because we were trying to protect the bus drivers in the early days. And we were having trouble getting people to pay again,” Lieber said. more: https://www.silive.com/news/2023/05/...dget-deal.html |

NYC congestion pricing pushed back to 2024, costing $250M in revenue, MTA says Published: Feb. 27, 2023 By Erik Bascome | tbascome@siadvance.com STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- The implementation of the nation’s first congestion pricing plan has been pushed back several months in a move that MTA officials anticipate will cost the agency roughly $250 million in expected revenue. Fare evasion cost MTA nearly $700M last year, panel says, recommending new turnstile design By Ben Brachfeld commentsPosted on May 17, 2023 The MTA lost nearly $700 million to fare evasion last year and should replace subway turnstiles with glass doors, an agency panel said in a long-awaited report. The agency’s estimated losses from farebeating have climbed considerably in just a few years, from about $200-300 million before the pandemic, to $500 million last year, and now $690 million, said MTA Chair and CEO Janno Lieber on Wednesday, including $315 million on city buses and $285 million on subways. more: https://www.amny.com/transit/fare-ev...nstile-design/ https://www.amny.com/wp-content/uplo...k-1200x800.jpg A prototype fare array built by Conduent Transportation, with middle-out doors and wheelchair accessible entry. They're okay. They've made a sincere effort to make modern stylish station experiences. I could quibble about some minor things but I wo.... OKAY I will! Dear MTA, please stop it with all the state motto and imagery stuff! It's heavy handed and honestly a little weird. And side note, why are we still having new MTA rolling stock delivered with the horrible Cuomo stripes after the dude is gone??? That should have been an easy one. It is the most direct evidence of his micromanaging of the MTA and they're apparently fine with that legacy? Pick up the phone and tell the factory to stop it with the decals. It's like if Biden had just allowed the previous monster's Air Force One paint scheme to go through to production and then say "whoops, I guess its too late now?" |
