It's a type of arcade machine, e_r; my guess is that it's supposed to be an R2D2 knockoff. When I went back there on the weekend, kids were dropping quarters into it, and it lights up and plays robotic sounds...Chinatown needs the revenue...!

I know. That was so jarring. 24-karat-gold plating, 40 coats of "oriental pearl lacquer" and...naugahyde (!)

T2, I was hoping to find those crossed skis in this photo from the 1970s. I am able to make out 'Ski Room'.
Actually, the longer I look at it, I believe I see the one remaining ski as well. cool!

Some Interesting Buildings in South Central
 

Here are a few Google streetview shots of three buildings in the neighborhood where I grew up that have a distinctive look to them.

This is an apartment building currently undergoing a total interior renovation. Located 4775 Broadway, tax rolls indicate this building was erected in 1919. The ghost sign says "Anderson Apartments"

Located on the same block, taking up the majority of the block's length, is this structure built in 1928. It features some detailed ornamental ironwork around the second story windows. I used to walk past this building every day while attending grammar school nearby. Storefronts are numbered starting at 4759 Broadway. The corridor down Broadway from Vernon Avenue to Slauson was for many years a vibrant business section. Many of the stores and business were victimized during the 1965 riots, and the entire area suffered.

Across from the Olympic Swimming Stadium at the corner of Menlo Avenue and Santa Barbara/MLK Avenue is this small medical office building. It is good example of streamline moderne applied to a smaller structure. I remember this used to be tan/offwhite in color; the present signage and yellow paint doesn't enhance the professional services being offered. It was built in 1938.

You'll notice they failed to proofread their postcards. They've got the wrong street address on them. They transposed the last two numbers. Should be 5849, they've got 5894.

I just found out the substation that supplied the electricity for the Mt. Lowe Scenic Railway still stands in Altadena.

I saw that and just thought I'd mis-remembered it. I can remember a club sign from decades ago but not what I did this morning.

Wow, great find, and still under construction too! One can clearly see the difference in fenestration between the Grand and Olive halves of the building. The elevator/entrance tower also stands out. All three Pacific Mutual Buildings are in this shot as well. Too bad it's not a little wider as this was before the Biltmore was extended to Grand. As far as I know, the building holds 2 levels of parking, one underground, one street level, two on the upper stories and the last on the roof (plus the spaces outside on the north side of the building) I've actually never been in it.

After Ski Room the bar became "Raji's." I lived behind the building on Harold Way around 1998-2000. I visited the bar too, it was hardcore dive at that time. Bartenders were mainly Thai, and according to one of them, owners owned also the notorious Black Lite on Western. The "Ski Room" -name was still visible inside the entrance door. Once a ganbanger -type of older lady was asked to leave. On her way out she grabbed an empty beer bottle and threw it at the bartender, missing. Then she threw a barstool. The tiny, skinny Thai lady jumped over the bar, pushed the gangbanger on the ground and started to beat her. Eventually ganbanger left and the service continued normally. This was early weekday evening. One time pre -24 Kiefer Sutherland came in too, a lady friend in tow (just an hour before he happened to be at Frolic Room too.)
Then Raji's was sold and the new owner tried to make it a bar/club hybrid. Nobody I know goes there anymore.

Thanks tovangar2 for the great info on the beautiful Pacific Mutual Garage. I wanted to post this garage as a contrast. It's on Broadway between 7th and 8th. Last week I noticed cars parked up at the edge on the roof. I'm surprised no one has driven off.

The drawing is of the Maier & Zobelein brewery on the west side of the Los Angeles River. Zoebelein quit that one in 1907 and started his Eastside brand over at the Los Angeles Brewing Company on the east side of the river (shown in the photo, now the arts complex).

I hope you all will indulge me and answer a question I've had for a long time. I'm confused by the scene in Criss Cross (1949) where the armored truck is loaded and leaves the Pacific Mutual garage. As it leaves the camera follows it through a window directly above the exit ramp, which appears to be part of a skylight structure. Nothing like this is there now nor was in my memory. I see no sign of it in e_r's construction photo. Are we really inside the garage or is this a very good set and back-projection effort or what? There are some cuts, but basically it's one continuous scene coming down the stairs from the second floor (or a mezzanine) counting room until the truck turns north on Grand. I cannot get my Google car to stop in exactly the right place so I can look down into the garage exit (and never thought to explore further when I was actually on Grand Ave). I hope this doesn't take forever to load. Thx.
