I'm trying to decide if the iced tea/malt shack is a remodeled version of the old white log coffee shop, or a new structure on the same site. At the moment i'm leaning toward the former

I think you are correct HossC. That sure looks like the same building.

I used to enjoy finding "survivors" on NLA, no matter how mundane they may have seemed. But lately I find it simply sad. The survivor below is barely surviving at all. It looks boarded up, with a trash bag on the entry roof. The 'grand dames' of old LA are either renovated and cherished, or reduced to rubble. But simple places like this are left to rot, robbed of their meager dignity....forced to linger in purgatory while denied any hope of rescue.

HI Albany:

My roommate Walter, who was a criminal defense attorney, and I used to live at the end of this block going West. I was going to college then and it was 1972. The ramshackle 1901 house we lived in is long gone. You can still see the vacant lot on the South side of the street. Walter later moved to San Francisco....I stayed in the LA area.

The photo you posted brings back a lot of old but still fresh memories.

You can see our old house in the background. I believe it had been built around 1900. Upstairs at the Left was an actor's school. I used to watch the beautiful hopeful actors walk up those stairs. What became of them?

They're working as Disney Characters at Disneyland. maybe working in a Valley car wash or at a Denny's. Some may have taken Dionne Warwick's choice to return to San Jose? You do know the way to San Jose I presume.

Sorry, just couldn't resist!

Graybeard and Retired:

:D:D:D Retired.....very true.

Yes, it was really amazing to see these face-beautiful people attending the ''acting classes''. The boys were actually prettier than the girls.

The'' Acting Coach'' would go into a locked room and make the students pound on the door and shout loudly. I could hear it day and night, it went on for hours. I guess that's whats called ''method'' acting?

Thanks for pinpointing the location of the iced tea stand FredH and HossC.

Thanks for your expertise Wig-Wag (Jack). I didn't notice that vertical power line until you pointed it out.

I couldn't imagine how Pico & Arden might have intersected, then relaized you meant--or USC meant--Ardmore. Looking west from the intersection today, you can see that the three main buildings seen in the vintage shot still stand:

:previous:

Chuckaluck's link leads to a set of four pictures taken at the intersection of West Pico Boulevard and South Ardmore Avenue in 1929. I decided to do "then and nows" with three of them, although it looks like GW just beat me to the first one. Since I've already done the screengrabs, I'll include my versions here too.

As GW says, quite a few of these buildings have survived relatively intact, which should please Albany NY. The building behind the "Hot Paris" sign in the picture above is the yellow building behind the white one in the picture below. The white building on the left has survived reasonably well too. You can even still see the framework for the California Storage Co roof sign, although the current sign isn't as interesting.

This shot shows Pico looking south from Ardmore.

The house across the street is now a medical center, and apart from losing the Alamo Lunch cafe at the front, it looks fairly similar to the picture above.

GSV

This one is the reverse of the picture above.

I think the green building is a modified version of the one in the picture above. It's lost a few windows, but looks quite well kept. I was pleased to see that the house on the right with the diamond shaped skylights is still there. In the picture above, it looks like there's a single-story house next to the diamond skylight house. It's actually a seemingly well-preserved little courtyard of houses.

While looking for information on Hot for Paris (1929), I came across this photograph of a strikingly beautiful actress.

When I right-clicked on the photograph it was labeled Greta Nissen.

yet the website said it was Sylvia Sidney.

Any idea what the object placed near the bottom of the light post might be?
