Tovangar's post on the topic synthesizes FW's post. http://skyscraperpage.com/forum/show...ostcount=12319

I suppose I need to do more creek homework. :???:

These views suggest that Vermont and adjoining streets may have been intentionally elevated, or the creek area was naturally lower than surrounding areas. Heavy rain must have been fun.:uhh: (Plenty of NLa posts concerning this especially at or near the Normandie Hotel on 6th.) It certainly looks like these pictures are after the major construction, but an argument can be made that they were taken pre-construction (unless, as FW theorized, the pictured portion of Fourth Street only existed after the construction).

Was the post construction deliberately left with the pictured elevation disparity? Wasn't the construction to obviate the need for a flood plain? From the little I have explored on NLA, there doesn't appear to be much evidence - today - of generally lower ground levels in the area. But maybe I am wrong. I do recall reading or hearing that construction of the large grocery stores at Vermont and Third (Vons and Ralphs) was very daunting and time consuming. The biggest problem was the slough that required both major excavation and more pilings than expected to support the buildings. (Might be an interesting event to explore.) But returning to the above photos, are the structure/s in the background part of the Diana area? Did they predate the construction being left intact and undisturbed during construction - or were they post construction creation?

Ralphs at Third and Vermont (Must have been remodeled, compared to current structure. Possibly a teardown since the current structure is setback and surrounded by parking rather than a nearby street.)

Ralphs at Third and Vermont, sad time in '92. ("No, the Bimini Baths are over there.!")

Can't help but wonder whether some of the creek landfill made it into the picture HossC posted. And then there was GW's Kirkland house photo that was clearly built higher than Vermont, perhaps because of a desire to remain dry or maybe to be closer to the pigeons.:koko:

That driveway retaining wall looks like it took some abuse. Remember to use that parking brake when visiting!

Looking for images from Third and Vermont area and discovered these two unfamiliar images from Third - downtown.

Half of a stereoptic view of 3rd Street, looking west past office buildings to the 3rd Street Tunnel under Bunker Hill in the far distance. Horse-drawn vehicles and a streetcar are on the unpaved street.
Undated.

Another unexpected find on Third Street.

6420 West Third, "El Ra[n]chito Antiques." Address would have been close to intersection of Third and Fairfax - across from Farmer's Market? Source omitted letter "n."

1937 (Source suggests the El Ranchito is in background. Exact address for this structure - unknown.)

Seems it must have something to do with Pio Pico's place... could the antique store be a copy?

At first I thought the source may have misidentified the address since El Ranchito had been misspelled. But the antique store is listed in the '39 directory. http://rescarta.lapl.org:8080/ResCar...00003/00000004 May not have been a copy, but someone may have been capitalizing on similarity (white paint) or name.

I don't get out much. When will this be available via DVD or pay-per-view?

Nicely done! (If you keep this up I may start to doubt many of the other photos I see on the interweb!)

Pretty cool postcard huh. Anyone recognize these houses? (perhaps we've discussed them before)

Just to I.D. some things on these photos. The officer is probably driving a 49-51 Ford with a Federal Q Siren mounted on the right front fender. “Q” sirens would almost drain the 6 volt battery of life when using it which would hinder performance of the car. It was controlled by the horn ring on the steering wheel. It had a brake on the siren because it would keep running for a long time when the electricity was cut off. Kind of the Cadillac of Sirens and still is. The piece of paper in the glove box is a “Hot Sheet” which listed license plates of cars that were stolen. The plate number was listed in a column by the first number. This made it easy for the officer to find. The “Hot Sheet” was renewed everyday. The revolver is a break down and is old for that time, probably purchased to commit his suicide.

A transcription, as I had a hard time making it out and maybe others of you do as well:

A request that my body be not
sent home - but it be cremated
& thrown to the winds. This because
it would be easier - if it can be any -
on my family.
