74 degrees is about when I start looking for shade.

And it's 90 all weekend in Chicago. I'd be looking for shade, if I was outside at all.

Curious, what program did you use to create these shadows? I've used two separate programs, with somewhat mixed results.

^I have to do them by hand, calculating their lengths using the sun azimuth formulae from the Naval Observatory. Luckily, there was a rendering showing the four buildings' northern façades from the park that I could stretch and skew in Photoshop to get the right shapes.

Sketchup has what I believe is one the better/most user-friendly sun shading modelers, for a reasonable $599. I've used it twice now, for two separate mid-rise projects, and it's a great tool.

That being said, 2pm shadows are one thing, but I don't think they will be much of a concern in the afternoon, whether in May or in October, since the shadows will fall more towards the east and not as directly in the park. Late afternoon and early evening shadows cast in Grant Park from along the Michigan Avenue side are more dramatic because the sun is much lower at that point in the west, so even a 15-25 story building can cast a pretty dramatic shadow at 5pm.

Totally. One of the things I'm still proud of is that Chicago still has the title for tallest in the US by floor to roof height, and even the other "tallest" are not that tall; I think roughly 30% of the Burj Khalifa is actually uninhabitable space. Decorative spires are cheap ways of pushing upward and contradict the ethos of Chicago architecture.
