I just found a few more slides of the 1974 explosion in another file of mine. Gold's Warehouse Service Bldg....Look at all those broken window frames! https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/xq90/924/ZmbNcm.jpg eBay I like those oversized wrought-iron lanterns. Here's Gold's Warehouse again from a different angle. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/8...924/I1YYbN.jpg eBay Another injured truck annd debris. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/xq90/923/YbKjIP.jpg eBay And lastly here's one of the photographers. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/8...924/9qhSlt.jpg eBay (cropped) He's dressed exactly like my dad dressed in 1974. . |

Life before school buses. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...924/cIzgUe.jpg eBay And I bet every one of those kids grew up and told their children they had to walk to school. ...:D snicker https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/8...924/mQIS6V.jpg reverse For search purposes: San Pedro... San Pedro Street School was just north of E Washington Boulevard. It's now the San Pedro Street Elementary School, although the current buildings don't match the layout on the 1910 Baist map. I think this undated LAPL image shows the original building. https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...droSchool1.jpg LAPL |

:previous: I thought there was only one boy in HossC's photograph. Imagine my surprise when I noticed the two little boys standing by the gate....They look like sentinels. :) https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...922/3ETLkB.jpg I also didn't notice the open-air pavilion on the school grounds. . |
.
I have never, repeat never, seen the Ambassador Hotel from this angle. (1971) https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...922/UAmgCZ.jpg eBay I didn't realize there were so many buildings crammed in behind the hotel. (and between the two wings)...If I didn't know better, I'd say it was a movie studio. And where, pray tell, was the photographer when he snapped this view?.. . |

I stand corrected. My orientation (and timing) was way off. At first glance I mistook the image as depicting the Ambassador as fronting Wilshire. https://images.fineartamerica.com/im...ll-archive.jpghttps://images.fineartamerica.com/im...ll-archive.jpg 1940 https://www.kcet.org/sites/kl/files/...al_1940_0.jpeghttps://www.kcet.org/sites/kl/files/...al_1940_0.jpeg looking east https://nthp-savingplaces.s3.amazona...photo_amb2.jpghttps://nthp-savingplaces.s3.amazona...photo_amb2.jpg https://www.laconservancy.org/sites/...?itok=GiEsTkKThttps://www.laconservancy.org/sites/...?itok=GiEsTkKT https://www.kcet.org/sites/kl/files/...e/00063179.jpghttps://www.kcet.org/sites/kl/files/...e/00063179.jpg http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-0kQCyMiFB2...ing-pewter.jpghttp://1.bp.blogspot.com/-0kQCyMiFB2...ing-pewter.jpg |

Speaking of The Ambassador area, this is from a post E_R made back in Jan. 2012 (page 293). This is a shot facing west (ca. 1922) from 6th and Mariposa which is right around the corner from The Ambassador Hotel. A caption for the photo says "The resurgent Arroyo de la Sacatela floods the intersection of Sixth Street and Mariposa Avenue." In an article on KCET's website titled "Uncovering L.A.'s Lost Streams" they note: West of downtown Los Angeles, the Arroyo de Sacatela flowed south through present-day Los Feliz and Koreatown on its way to the inland cienega of the Ballona Creek watershed. They link to an article on the Militant Angeleno website titled "A River Ran Through It: In Search Of Sacatela Creek," where he uncovers it's path. One notable passage: "The constant flooding of 6th and Mariposa was one of the reasons for turning the creek into a storm drain. Today, the 6th and Mariposa intersection is home to "DWP Distribution Station 61" and, until recently, an establishment called 'Creekside Cafe.'" |
And speaking of L.A. rainstorms...this photo can be found in many places around the internet (including Getty Images), but the info is rather sparse,
except to name the paddler as Myrna Loy c. 1925. https://i.insider.com/5b1fed255e48ec...jpeg&auto=webp There seems little to go on in hopes of finding the location. |

re: 1971 Ambassador Hotel slide. I asked. ."And where, pray tell, was the photographer when he snapped this view?" Quote:
And look what just popped up on eBay! This was obviously taken from the same location as the Ambassador Hotel slide except that the angle is slightly to the south. . .so Southeast, right? https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...923/LnCy9h.jpg eBay In the far distance you can see the 32-story Occidental Life Building in South Park. (built: 1965) Oh, and one more thing. Here is another slide newly posted on eBay from the same eBay seller. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...922/l3pPey.jpg eBay Seller's description: Wilshire and Bronson, 1971. . |

Here's an oddity. Katherine's Kitchen serving German dinners somewhere in the Topanga area. ..Say whaaaa ? https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...922/AXPWD0.jpg Topanga Historical Society At first I thought this was along the beach but now. . .not so much. update: I just found a better description. "Boards support Katherine's Kitchen at the entrance to Sylvia Park, weakened by storms in the early 1930s. It collapsed soon afterward."..Link hmm. . .Sylvia Park? I'm not sure where that is. I'll google it when I have a bit more time. . |

e_r, the name Bill Buerge may trigger your recall: We had a short spate of postings (starting at #57217 on 6/29/2021 from GW, then including odinthor and Martin Pal as well) about the former clubhouse in Sylvia Park, which Buerge has been working on restoring (remember the cast iron gate?). Adding to those postings: https://i.postimg.cc/L8dpHjFq/Sylvia-LAT-1935-3-13.jpg LA Times, 3/13/1935. and, for location: https://i.postimg.cc/x1KSqq96/Sylvia.jpg gsv |
